Personally I agree with it. But is it going to be easy to monitor, of course it isn’t.

Age verification is for U16s Not over 60s

There's now a setting on my smartphone asking me to confirm that I'm over 18.

I've had the same account for over 20 years!

So I Ignore it.

But who is really collecting all this data and why?

One tiny welcome cog in what is the biggest attack on democracy in our lifetimes (misinformation)

Adult brain rot is the more dangerous issue.

The evils of Social (and traditional!) media start and end with the private ownership model.

I've just watched a Woman walking her dog, She stops and gets her phone out of her pocket and her thumb Is whizzing up and down the screen whilst her dog just stares up at her. They move on and after about Ten feet the same thing happens again.
It's insanity, what or why on earth are people doing texting each other In the morning?
There should be a social media ban on people under the age of 98 Years old.
Groups of People standing outside bloody shop doorways blocking the entrance talking or texting shyte to each other.

Phones should have a device built into them whereby If the user Is texting or talking crap about nail bloody varnish or table cloths then the phone explodes killing them.

Re your dog walker Ted, I frequently go into blokes toilets and find men stood at a urinal with their phone out in one hand scrolling, knob in the other drizzling away.

I find it bonkers, is the attention span that short?

I'm happy with this.

Pretty easy to police as a parent, if you want to. Things like family link on google make it easy already to monitor and restrcit your child's time on social media - I imagine with this change it would block them by default.

Obviously some kids will still access various social media, but much less will do. It needs parents to be involved as well.

It may be the right thing to do. Time will tell.

But, why is it that the victims of social media abuse are effectively penalised while those who enable it, namely Meta, X, Snapchat, TikTok etc, are allowed to continue their nefarious work?

As is so often the case, money and power control the decisions.

Re your second paragraph, the reason is a piece of legislation passed 30 years ago, when the Internet was in short trousers and Bill Clinton was in the oval office. It's called section 230 and absolves platform providers of any responsibility for content shared on their infrastructure. They are legally protected.

The good news is that law may be about to change:

Looking at the response to this on Twitter, it seems even a trillion dollars isn't enough to make Elon Musk happy.

Musk is not long for this world.
He’s the J.D. Rockefeller of our times. You don’t march around the globe attempting to shape society and governments in a way that he sees fit and proper without deadly repercussions.
He’s a full on megalomaniac with psychotic tendencies all fuelled by various potions.

Agree with Clive - not a chance of this ban in sheep's clothing working in practice.

Rockefeller went on to live until the ripe old age of 97 btw.

They can start by banning the over 60s that radicalise themselves on social media and wonder why their children don't talk to them.

All you have to do is go on Facebook or X to see the irascible grey hordes living in parallel universes.

It's Peter Thiel and the Dark Enlightenment, probably.

Sounds like a contemporary prog band, but it isn't.

It’s already happened, Ted. Hezbollah won’t be talking crap about nail varnish or table cloths anymore, that’s for sure.

Yet Ian Russell, father of Molly Russell, the poor lass who took her own life at the age of 14 after viewing harmful content online, has condemned the government’s decision: “A sledgehammer to crack a nut”, he’s saying.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/art

One thing’s for sure though; none of the trillionaires will settle for being mere billionaires if they’re not forced to. After all, it’s not their job to keep children safe online.

So state-controlled media is always factual and unbiased?

I absolutely support the (unworkable) ban, but it has to include blue-sky as well.

Chatting to my oldest son, who has a two year old daughter and he said he's relieved that she wont have access to social media growing up.
I think its a good thing and gives responsible parents a bit more leeway in trying to keep their kids off social media. Snap chat is the worst of them all , in my experience.
I agree , its going to be impossible to police it all the time, but its a step in the right direction.

I neither said that state media is factual and unbiased, that it should be the only ownership model, or that Bluesky should be exempt.

Bluesky is still a commercial enterprise with a huge influencer of democracy.
