| WLS - Deal Agreed to Sell Field to Norwich on 21:56 - Jun 19 by numptydumpty | You do know its the start of September that the transfer window closes. Two and a half months ahead. We will make signings. There is no doubt about that, am sure. The likes of Field and Cook are paid way more than most other team members and both were squad players. The same argument is aligned with all those supporting the inclusion of Jordan Henderson over the inclusion of Adam Wharton in the England world cup squad. Tbf, i dont mind Henderson's selection. But two players in more for just being the right sorts but getting limited game time and wanting playing time more themselves. Sometimes cutting ties overrules sentiment. [Post edited 19 Jun 22:00]

Sam Field only a squad player for a team with the second worse defence record in the division? Just think how bad it would have been if he had played instead of the quality that did.
| WLS - Deal Agreed to Sell Field to Norwich on 08:30 - Jun 20 with 1807 views | gazza1 | It was 'odds on' that he was going to leave in the close season......excellent fee for a player who was not going to get much game time here. Is that right or wrong??, make your own minds up but the Manager, coach whatever you want to call him did not feel he was good enough. Norwich can afford a £1.5 million 'in & out' player with a fair wage bill too - we cannot so job done and well played by the Club. Personally, I liked him but he was very, very average last season when he played for us, hence why he has gone. He was a midfielder and a poor LB so not versatile at all. Limited skills but was a big asset in many games for us. I hope we get in a decent LB with the money....full backs are very important to the Team these days. Good luck to the lad and hope all goes well for him. | | | |

- youāve lost Ipswich and Coventry who were exceptional and replaced them with three clubs in various states of disarray. - thereās no Birmingham and Wrexham coming up this time, three clubs that will struggle one of whom has lost their inspirational manager. - play offs extended to 8th. - weāve got 2 good strikers who both have a year under their belts, thatās that hard/expensive bit of the recruitment done. - weāve talked for years about the Eze sell on, well itās here/spent now. - a number of Madsen, Vale, Edwards types who have shown promise are going into year 2/3 at this level where they really should hit their straps. - the team needs goalkeepers, full backs and centre mids, but two of those positions are cheap and in plentiful supply. - manager has a year of championship experience now. - One would hope we don't have the same amount of injuries as the last two seasons. You'd have to be very unlucky/incompetent for it to happen a third time. If weāre not at least pushing for 7th/8th this year, why not? If not now, then when? What else are we waiting for exactly?

We've probably got the best fee we're ever likely to get for him, he doesn't seem to be part of the manager's plans and apparently he wanted to leave... So for me it's good luck Sam, thanks a million for what you gave us and we move on. |
Nail on head. Field is probably at peak value. At 28 is he going to get better? He's not rated by the manager, so unlikely to get a lot if game time. Norwich journos reporting initial £1.5m, possibly rising to £2.8 with options, including promotion. Assuming that fee is accurate, that's a really good deal for us. Now for a younger, cheaper replacement.

I hope you're right. I would like to believe you are right. But the obvious counter argument to your puppy-like enthusiasm (who are you and what have you done with the real Clive?) is the lack of experience on the pitch. Of the current squad there are no players over the age of 27. The four old timers are Dunne, Smyth, Chair, and JCS. Of those only Dunne played more than 2,000 minutes last season. Chair and JCS couldn't manage 2,000 minutes between them, and there's no reason to believe they will contribute any more than that next season. Da yoot will really need to step up if we are to finish top 8 next season. [Post edited 20 Jun 13:49]

I'm glad that the fee includes some add-ons because we can now all speculate on when Norwich have to pay us more money. Sam has played 10 games - does that mean they have to pay us ? Sam has scored a goal, Sam is wearing a lovely cardigan etc.etc.

I think the point is: last season practically everyone said this was the season to judge, this was the season we really should see significant progress. The 3rd full season under this leadership, money spent, including the Eze cash, two good strikers now at the club, a manager in his second season in the league, lots of time to bed in a game model, lots of time to bring through lads from the EDS. 5 (?) seasons with Heston live⦠This is the year we take a big step forward, isnāt it? Well you know I agree with you, that's in my cons column as well, but that's a deliberate decision that we've made. You can't get rid of all your experienced players, then under perform and say "well we didn't have enough experience". The club believe that lowering the average age will help, so by their theory the team getting younger and the old gits leaving is another big plus in the pros column.

But was it Nourry saying this is the season to judge? If it was then he has made a rod for his back by stripping the squad of solid Championship experience. Hull didn't look anything special last season but they had five outfield players older than anything we've currently got playing over 2,000 minutes last season. John Egan and Matt Crooks are both the 'wrong' side of 30. Semi Ajayi and John Lundstram are both 31 and they both played over 1,500 minutes. The people at the club are never going to say publicly "this is the season we're going for it" for pretty obvious reasons. Warbs couldn't really say anything else once we had torn up the incremental development plan and pushed the boat out for Austin, Johansen, Field, and De Wijs all in the same window. We were obviously all in at that point. I don't mind that we are sticking to the steady progress plan now. I just don't think letting all our most experienced players go is the way to go about it. Neither do I. I wouldnāt be selling Sam Field. Iād be selling Varane. But there we go. But there hasnāt been steady progress. 25/26: 15th / 58 pts / GD -12 24/25: 15th / 56 pts / GD -10 23/24: 18th / 56 pts / GD -11 Weāve improved 2pts in the last two seasons with a GD one worse. It doesn't look good when you set it out like that. But be fair Hunter, you are cherry picking your data points. Let's start with Hull and Millwall. I think we all now know that Hull overspent to get promotion last season. It has been widely reported that they have to find £6m in player sales before the end of the month to avoid a points deduction. They gambled and got lucky. Had they not got promoted they would be in deep trouble now. And I don't think anyone wants us to be in that position again. Millwall have been playing the same steady development game as us for quite some time. They've just been doing it better than us. They had a mis-step in 23/24 when they appointed Joe Edwards but they still finished above us that season thanks to a late surge under Neil Harris. A lot of people tipped Wawll for the playoffs last season and they've had a few near misses in the last six or seven years. In fact I can't remember the last time we finished above Wawll. I certainly don't expect us to do so next season. 23-26 does look like groundhog day. But there is some context to that. 21/22 was the Warburton 'all-in' season. We left ourselves in a deep hole financially after that and needed to steady the ship. 22/23 Was the Beale/Critchley/Ainsworth season. That was a car crash and it's a miracle we didn't go down. For me 22/23 is the baseline against which we should measure our progress. We made a terrible start to 23/24 and again looked like relegation fodder. Appointing Marti Cifuentes was a big step forward. It wasn't always pretty but he pulled us out of trouble in 23/24 and had us looking like a solid Championship team in 24/25. Then we parted ways with Marti in controversial circumstances, which for me at least was very disappointing. Julien Stephan then came in for his first season in English football and some sizeable shoes to fill. If you want to judge him just on 15th place and 58 points then fair enough it does look like no progress has been made, But if you take into account our chronic injury problems, the collapse in form in the final third of the season, and the fact that for the first time in decades we have two strikers who really look the business at this level then I think you can say that 15th was a false position for us and we should have done better. Fundamentally a lot of people are going to look at our league position and points total over the last three seasons and agree with you that we aren't making progress. And you're right, the league table doesn't lie. But underneath all that I think the trend is upwards. We're not going into next season worrying about relegation. Instead we're asking ourselves why can't this be our season for the playoffs. For me it is too soon and when you look at what we're up against (West Ham, Wolves, Burnley, Millwall, Boro, Southampton, Sheffield United, Norwich, Wrexham, Birmingham). It's difficult to see how we finish in the top 8 against that lot. Luckily for us the game isn't played on paper. Some of those clubs I listed might struggle. And we might unearth another Kone or Burrell. Anything can happen. But I still think hanging on to Cook and Field for at least one more season would have greatly helped us and they will be hard to replace. [Post edited 20 Jun 13:20]
