| WLS - Deal Agreed to Sell Field to Norwich on 11:56 - Jun 19 by LazyFan | £1.5m with add-ons, say for appearances; I suspect that will be £2m in the end, at most. That's a very good deal in this market for an ageing midfielder. He's champ standard, but not promo chasing Champ standard. And next year we would not have got anything for him, so it was sell him now or get nothing. There are midfielders we can get on free's and also younger ones we could get cheaper than that, or spend a bit more and get even more. This £2m will also be fully ours in monies for the accounts, as he's been here so long. It will be counted as pure profit. I still suspect we may sell Saito at a loss for £2m, but we still get £2m and Fields, that's £4m, then with the costly old timers we let go, that could cover us to keep all our players and get in those three players we need, LB, GK and B2B Mid. I have a sneaky feeling we shall be going after 2 midfielders to really bolster that area up. It was time to sell him, and we got a good price for him. So, I think this is a very good deal for us in this bad market. |
so it saito did go for two million and fields gone for 1.5 we have lost money in transfer dealings , or at best struck even thats not cooking , its not even simmering at a low heat its bad buisness all round . is the market bad or are we buying the wrong players ? thought the model was buy cheap sell high ? we might make a small profit on varanne if anyone fancies him still so thats a couple of million in the plus side of the spreadsheet.

| WLS - Deal Agreed to Sell Field to Norwich on 11:49 - Jun 19 by stevec | You’d think so but if he’s got a year left on his contract here and we want to sell him I could imagine his agent would be telling QPR to settle up. Looking at this in reverse, didn’t Cannon come here of his own volition and his old club sued for breaking his contract? Could have this wrong, but we do seem to be getting more money than you’d usually expect from a few sales in recent years so it may well be that £1.5m could include cover for us to settle Fields remains of his contract. Suddenly that £1.5m is essentially only half of that in profit. As I say, pure speculation, but conceivable. |
This was being argued earlier in the year. I can't see it anything other than complete nonsense. It would mean that no reported transfer fee would have any relation to the actual fee. It would be a lie, in fact. Players get their contract paid up when the club wants them gone and they refuse to be transferred because their wages are higher than their value. So they negotiate a % of the remaining contract and the player is free to sign with another club on lower wages having been compensated for the loss (or some of it). A transfer is a transfer - the selling club gets a fee (if there is one) the existing contract is cancelled by mutual consent and the player signs a new contract with the acquiring club. If I've completely misunderstood how transfers work and someone with actual experience can put me right, I'll happily stand corrected. Otherwise I'll continue to regard it as nonsense.

| WLS - Deal Agreed to Sell Field to Norwich on 22:41 - Jun 18 by Ned_Kennedys | Field started the season very badly and Stephan decided he had better options. Wanted to play regularly so the Norwich loan made sense although he wasn’t a regular for them either. Good luck to him: he’s been a decent player for us. Not sure why people are so worried we have no replacement: it’s mid June not early September and there’s a few months left to sign a few better midfielders. |
''there’s a few months left to sign a few better midfielders.'' So if a Sam Field is worth 1.5 million you think we can sign a few 2 million + better midfielders? We also need a decent keeper and full backs. If we sell Kone or Burrell for decent wedge then that is possible but without that income then we are surely taking punts on unwanted, foreign and young players. To be fair the deals that brought the likes of Sam and Jimmy to the club were very good so anything is possible, lets see what the summer brings us.

Isak Alemayehu. I wouldn't mind seeing him in the squad. He looks like a great prospect and has had first team experience at Djurgardens before coming to us. But he'll need to be gradually introduced in games sor short periods and not started. Last season we saw with Esquerdinha and Adamson that it doesn't work to start youngsters too early.

| WLS - Deal Agreed to Sell Field to Norwich on 15:41 - Jun 19 by Wilkinswatercarrier | But if the manager doesn't pick him and the player wants minutes, what does the club do? Let him sit in the DS taking a wage? It's nothing to do with the club being run badly, it's the opposite. 3 years ago he would have gone on a free, like Manning or BOS etc. Now we get a fee and still the club (Nourry) has got it wrong. And he can't pass gorward, like Hayden and Varane. 2 down, 1 to go. |
I tend to agree with nearly all of what you say here Wilkins. Although, it would be a positive to see Sam here as a squad option, i feel for a 28 year old, clearly a squad player here £1.5 million plus incoming, and a hefty wage off the books is the way forwards. We still have to operate in the business world and sentiment alone doesnt pay the bills. Am certain, we have two centre mids incoming during this window. Clearly you dont move on two older "steady eddie" midfielders with zero incoming. Am sure deals are being negotiated as we speak. May have to wait a month or two, but incomings must be. I personally think we will keep Varane and work with him to improve. There is a raw talent there to be developed and last season, he lost his nerve for me. An improved season ahead and i can then see him being sold for much better money than, as of today. Yes Isak, the young midfielder looked tidy and promising on his home debut, but so did Dixon Bonner. Speaking of the devil himself, is Elijiah the prophet still residing in these 'ere shores !!! You buy them cheap, train them and develop them. Then you sell one of them for big money, and one of your players steps up. That is the game model we're supposedly chasing,

Yes, and that's what peak Field gets you, £1.5m, possibly £2m with addons. You sell for what you can get at peak. Useful player, but we need to sell and I would rather sell Field and some others than Madsen. Santos, Celar if we can shift em, Lloyd and possibly Saito. Get that lot of our books and we should have funds to secure the 3-4 players we need to build the squad up. It also means they will sign midfielders now, we knew about LB and GK, but not if they would improve the middle. Now they should do that, unless we wanna gamble on the kids again. Last season I stated Bennie was no midfielder, no winger and no fullback, but could be a forward. And so, we saw that came to pass and he's a decent forward. I think it's the same for Adamson; he's no RB, but I suspect he could play DMC. Which could be useful as we now need midfielders for sure. Will he get that chance, well see.

"Cheap" is not the same as "free". Its pretty obvious we need to sell in order to buy. Am sure the intention is to buy a younger and probably cheaper replacement. Given the budgets we have I really don't see what there is to moan about at this stage.

Well, I'm not moaning. I just said that I think that it's a huge risk. And I still do. It may work out, of course, but we're getting rid of a serious pro, a player of the year, a players' player of the year, a versatile player who can defend, and we're doing it for only £1.5m. I worry if we have anyone ready to step up, and I worry about our ability to replace him with so little money. Last time our CEO/DOF went shopping for a defensive midfielder, he came back with Hayden. We'll see in time, I suppose. But I think it's reasonable to have concerns.

I think I know what you are getting at. It's not that Norwich paid up the remainder of Field's contract with us. It's that we might have included the wages we save in the remainder of Field's contract to make it look like the "value of the deal" was actually more than the actual transfer. I don't think that's the case here. £1.5m rising to £2.8 seems if anything a bit low for a player of Field's age and experience. Especially when he only signed a contract extension last summer: https://www.qpr.co.uk/news/202 I do think the club pulled a fast one when Michi Frey was sold in January for a deal reported to be worth £500k. That did seem a lot for a player his age and with his injury record. The reports around Sinclair Armstrong's move to Bristol City also seem to have mysteriously inflated the value of the transfer. Of course none of this sleight of hand can be down to Nourry because he never says anything about transfers

I agree with this. It sounds like nonsense to suggest that the selling club has to pay off the remaining contract. They only settle when a player is being freed from a contract, not when a transfer to another club is done. It used the o be that the player gets a % of the fee if they have not put in a transfer request

These days you have to wonder if it is The Head Coach or someone else at the club who doesn't pick Sam. He sits on the bench taking a wage, a very important squad member able to cover several positions. Let's pick this up again after the transfer window ends, I am more than happy to eat humble pie.

OK, but its also surely fair to give the club the close season to find a replacement and judge after that? I do take your point about the model and in an ideal world Varane would have been the one sold for big money this summer but if anything he went backwards. It happens. So the club can only sell the players clubs want to buy. And if spent well £1.5m/£2m is not nothing. We are reportedly signing a half decent full back on a free transfer. No guarantees Sam's replacement will be any good of course, and every transfer is a risk. But equally there is a pressure to improve. There is another long thread on this site asking why we were are always doomed to mediocrity. Well, whilst I respect and like Sam, you could argue that keeping players like him year after year when we know his limitations (as well as his strengths) would be a good example of stagnation and accepting we are a lower/ mid-table Championship team. Many fans complained throughout the season that other than Madsen we had no one in midfield capable of a simple pass forwards to break the press, and as this has become such a vital part of the game this really held us back. Well, the club appear to be addressing that, with Hayden and Field both out. Given how challenging it is I don't think we can expect the club to be overly sentimental about turning down decent money for a player who had - rightly or wrongly - become peripheral, just to keep a decent egg about the place.

If they get the CM recruitment right then they should be going for the playoffs minimum. We have the strike force, they just need to have the chances created to put them away. We better not start the season with Madsen, Morgan, Varane and a DS player though. We need 2 more.

You do know its the start of September that the transfer window closes. Two and a half months ahead. We will make signings. There is no doubt about that, am sure. The likes of Field and Cook are paid way more than most other team members and both were squad players. The same argument is aligned with all those supporting the inclusion of Jordan Henderson over the inclusion of Adam Wharton in the England world cup squad. Tbf, i dont mind Henderson's selection. But two players in more for just being the right sorts but getting limited game time and wanting playing time more themselves. Sometimes cutting ties overrules sentiment. [Post edited 19 Jun 22:00]
