Big mistake, but inevitable as long as the manager remained in place. Field is a massive loss for many reasons; ability to protect the back four, always fit, experience, versatile, and the balance of a naturally left-footed player. |  | | |

There's a lot of good experience leaving the squad this summer.
I'm worried we could be regretting that before we get too far into next season. |
Losing Sam's experience in midfield is a big mistake, he's a better player than Varane but you can only sell players that are wanted by other clubs. Norwich saw the value in Sam when they were flirting with relegation last year, they got him on loan and they climbed the table finishing ninth. He ended up on the bench for some games at the end of the season but was still used as a valuable member of the squad and part of the selection process.
So Sam gets to see what a lovely part of the country it is living in Norfolk and having been shown that he will be used as a valuable member of the squad thinks I'm actually wanted here which is a big motivation in making a decision.
Let's not forget we shipped 70 goals last season, the second highest in the division and that's not all down to the back four, they were not protected as they should have been from midfield and we are letting our best defensive midfielder leave.
We all know Sam has his limitations when it comes to attacking play but he's a defensive midfield man who does a similar role to the one Shaun Derry did for us, he should be paired alongside a creative player, he had some great games for us which definitely kept us in the league.
So we move on and need to find an experienced, strong midfield player to replace him, the one who has every single attribute and doesn't cost much, it's going to be interesting but if we find a midfield Burrell equivalent ie in cost then who knows, I guess if you dont gamble you don't win..... It's a good price and deal for a player the manager didn't want, at the end of the day.

I also think Sam would have had a say in this. He probably really enjoyed his spell at Norwich and has a contract with them that will have a large Promotion bonus in that he thinks is more likely to happen with the canaries.

Not sure what the issues were behind the scenes , but i would have liked him to stay. Could have done with him last season, and looks like we could do with him this season. Hopefully we can get a decent replacement. I'm sure they're out there. |

His remaining contract has nothing to do with the transfer fee. He’s got a new (and probably improved) contract with Norwich so his one with us ends: seems straightforward to me. |  | | |

unfortunalty the money they hoped they would get for varanne aint gonna happen , he was pony last season and actually worse than the player who joined us , we turned down what was it 5 million ill be amazed if we get anything close to that for him now . so that leaves us with

Echo all of the above... think it is obvious that the current regime never had plans for Sam..so best for both parties he moves on
Hopefully for Sam it is an improved contract and he does well for them, apart for 2 games in the season
I was always amazed at some of the criticism he was afforded. When you are at the games you actually can see the amount of work he did off the ball... invariably if there was a tackler a block the majority of the time it was Sam Firld..
A much maligned player on social media, that always seemed to highlight what he wasn't great at... buy never gave him the praise I felt he deserved

Good luck Sam. Always one of my favourite players and gave his all. Always mystified by his ability to often be in the right place to shoot but so often hit it wide.
However he didn’t fit into the manager’s system and had a very poor start to last season so better to move on than fester on the bench.
