Another pre season friendly or the start of the fully competitive season ahead !!
I think this fixture has the potential for us to start the season on such a massive high. It could be a massive chance to throw a statement out to other championship clubs that QPR mean business this season.
There is zero excuse to rest any players for this game. Yes, they could get injured, but then again, any player could get injured in our first league encounter. Its not the start of a three game week, its a home game, so no long distance travel and its at a decent time on Saturday afternoon. Probably our fiercest London rivallry in terms of current league standings also. And then, to get fans onside from minute one of the new season. Lets go out and win the football match. The players too would get a massive boost with how brilliant the fans would be, if we managed to progress.
Will Millwall take it seriously is unimportant, we really should play absolutely our strongest available eleven supplemented by our strongest available bench.
Why would we do anything different to this ?

There was a League Cup game (the Ledesma game maybe) with Ellerslie closed and the rest of the ground not close to full and it seemed a good atmosphere from SAR because all the noise was coming from behind the goal. | | | |

Of course we should be taking the game seriously on and off the pitch and putting out the first team. The club should enter the League Cup every year with a view to winning it. Of course, it’s unlikely but teams improve through trying to do things they haven’t done before, through stretching themselves, and having a burning desire to win.

Loads in our group are not bothering with this one. We saw the contempt that Stephan showed towards the cup last season. If the club can’t be bothered with the cup and are just going to use it to play a load of 16 and 17 year olds then f**k them. We would rather spend our money elsewhere. Just wished one year we had a board / manager who would take the cup seriously. You just never know how we might do. We won’t be going up so it would be nice to have a cup run. | | | |

perhaps our fans are just pissed off playing millwall every year, dont buy people being on holiday, think its just lack of interest, because if we were playing man utd, liverpool, or any of the premier london clubs there'd be demand for tickets.

Yeah, I understand that. But Wilkins was responding to Bush who was saying the club should demonstrate it’s taking this seriously.
If the club had come out and publicly said we’re focussed on this game, the cups are inpkrtany to us this year, we’ll be treating this game seriously and will field a strong side, and it’s £10 a ticket to get fans in, you and your mates would go, wouldn’t you. We’d get the same sort of attendance we get for the first normal league game of the season (normally that Saturday), and we’d be making a statement of intent for the season.
Now, you want the players to back that up on the pitch. But if the reason you don’t want to make that sort of statement above is because you don’t have faith in the players, then that tells a different story.
I think we should take this game seriously and make that clear to fans. Otherwise it feels like we want to hold onto the “well, we weren’t really trying, we don’t care about the cup” excuses for losing at home to Millwall. That’s not a winning mentality. | | | |

I’m going and I will be very disappointed if we field a weak team. As Numpty says, there is no excuse as it is a weekend and not a 3 game week. Since it is against Championship opposition it’s a perfect opportunity to give our first choice players a proper test ahead of the League season. A morale boost if things go well and a valuable lesson/wake up call if they don’t. | | | |

I definitely care. Obviously there’s a 0.1% chance if that of actually winning the thing but I would like to see us in one quarter-final in my lifetime. Get through this and it sets the right tone for Pompey but also we might just get a fun evening somewhere to break up the Bolton/Blackburn/West Brom monotony as we bumble along to maybe finishing tenth. | | | |

5) a cup run puts players in the spotlight for sale in next transfer window
6) on a cup run the club sell more tickets and merchandise
7) when we rest the first team, we always seem to lose the next game badly!!
8) creating a winning mentality is good for both team and fans

I don't think closing the Stan Bowles or charging £14 for a ticket is treating the competition with contempt. It's more likely a question of demand and economics.
Why don't we all wait and see what team we put out before losing it with Julien, Noury or the club.
This is an entirely different scenario to last season. This fixture is when we usually play the final preseason friendly and we have a complete week to recover before we start the Championship. I think they will put out a strong line up, very similar to the team that commences the league season.

THIS is the first game of the season, a first choice fit team should be played, all the set plays we have worked on, all the Team tactics, the lot - it should be treated by everyone and I mean everyone at the Club as an important match......anybody who thinks any differently, just, does not understand.
Sadly, I will not be there, on holiday in Sardinia with my family!!!! I do hope to be watching it though. [Post edited 20 Jul 8:07]

I think this is a fair point. While I do totally accept why people were so upset last season for the Plymouth game I also think they aren’t completely recognising how poor our team was at that point and why it’s potentially different now.
For the Preston game we had kamikaze Mbengue and a horribly out of form Morrisonat CB, Morgan and Esquerdinha as FBs, an also horribly out of form Field with a newly rehabilitated Madsen in midfield, Then new to the division Poku and just back Dembele and Chair who I don’t think was really fit and then Celar up front. With bare bones like that then a couple more injuries and that cup team would’ve been playing in the Championship!
I’m not renewing the whole argument about who we should’ve played then as we’ve done that to death and back. But my point is I don’t think we’re anywhere like as bare bones going into this season provided that we don’t sell more than one or two and we <fingers double crossed> don’t get any injuries. So I don’t think we should be anticipating anything like the team last season, particularly as there isn’t the silly midweek scheduling soon after the first Championship game like last season. My admiration goes to those who travelled all the way down to Plymouth midweek last season, but the club committed a total own goal with the disgraceful team selection that day.
The club even admitted it themselves with Paul Furlong being the man in the dugout that day. Can' t imagine the anger for those that were there that day - to then be presented with the teamsheet before kick off. A club PR b*lls up to the nth degree and more !!
