I saw PSG do this, and I guess we have copied it. I guess the idea is that they are penned in, we press high and generally win the ball back high up the pitch or get the ball back around the centre circle when they hoof it forwards and effectively start possession higher up the field with players already high up the pitch compared to a normal KO.
It’s becoming a thing now Connell and not a miscue. Was happening regularly in the Champions league final also and occasionally in the WC. My understanding of it is to get the ball as deep into oppo territory as possible and try to turn them over in that area of the pitch from the throw in. Course with the new fast throw in being mandatory, not many chances to put pressure on the throwing team. Kinda daft idea anyway, I’m a believer in retaining possession as long as possible, not chucking it away on purpose.

Sinton made a reference to it during the broadcast yesterday. Said he had a former manager do it when he played. Referred to the cyclical nature of strategies.

I appreciate the rationale behind it but think I’d be more inclined just to play it back to our goalkeeper. He seems more than capable of spraying pinpoint passes to our wide players or simply playing it short so we retain possession and build from the back. I’m sure we’ll see all sorts of kick-off permutations as the season progresses.

It was Graham Taylor in an England v Poland Euro 92 qualifier.
Andy Gray was supposed to boot the ball out of play but fluffed it and sent the ball tamely up the middle straight to the Poland keeper.
Taylor was fuming. Subbed Gray at half time, and that was the end of his international career.
At junior school our centre forward would have the inside right and inside left on either side of him at the kick off. Not sure what that was all about. Perhaps the jeopardy for the opposition lay in the fact that they could never know in which direction he would play the ball - a yard to the left or a yard to the right!

If it was a remotely original idea then fair enough. I find it quite depressing that PSG or one of these oil-doped clubs start doing something and then we all copy it six months later.

Especially when there are far better kick off routines we could be copying from someone else. I wonder what our set piece coach is doing with themselves.

Totally agree - now we have someone in goal who can pick his man out, why not ping it from there as he did regularly to MadBen or get Dunne further up from the kick off and try to find him. Better still, get him up the pitch and maybe have a shot. That would be a pleasant surprise 😮
We looked pretty good in possession, why not try and keep it rather than boot it into touch with no chance of retaining the ball. We are seemingly much better at that than pressing, especially when Burrell doesn’t start.
One of the few teeth sucking moments and I hope it doesn’t become the norm, especially at home. Maybe second half, away from home, if you are in the lead, you have the right players and pressing game to make it worthwhile - but it’s ‘not for me, Clive.’
Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

Some have said why give possession away when you can retain and potentially start a move that way, at restarts. But there is a high likelihood of things not coming to anything ie too far away from goal, or losing possession also.
It puts us in the attacking third and we can then pin down the opposition, close to the corner flag, where we could regain possession, get a corner or throw in, and in very attacking areas, also.
Always thought, we should have done this, in the past, as it seems a no brainer , as opposed to the tactic of passing around the back line and then back to the keeper for ten straight minutes, and where exactly has that tactic got any team.
Think this is the best way at kick offs to start off a potential attack on goal. Totally in favour with this, myself.
Isn’t the kick-off routine, whatever form it takes, largely academic though anyway? Generally speaking (famous last words) goals aren’t scored or conceded within the first minute or so as a direct consequence of the specific kick-off method employed.
Anything occurring after the initial flurry of activity becomes increasingly random and can’t be attributable to it. It would be interesting to see the ‘intel’ though.

Thinking about it, I realise I don't know the laws for kick-offs. Does play begin when the whistle is blown or when the ball is touched? If the latter, does that mean you're free to cross the half way line before the ball moves?

Play begins when the ball is touched but all players must remain in their own half until that moment occurs, as I understand it.
So presumably if a goal is scored directly from the kick off but VAR subsequently identifies an attacking player with his toenail over the halfway line, the goal would be disallowed for encroachment. Or am I just being daft?

You can't cross the halfway line as we got pulled up for this at the start of the second when the ref blew and one of our players (Poku I think) started charging into the oppo half before the ball had even been kicked, so we got pulled back to start again.
Once the ball is touched, then you can move. My guess is the clock starts on the whistle, play starts when the ball is touched.

Sounds a bit like a ‘false start’ in athletics, the penalty for which is instant disqualification.
I wonder how many times a player would be allowed to make a ‘false start’ (encroach) at the kick-off before the referee was forced to issue a yellow card? And what would the specific offence be under the official laws of the game?

I’m sure we done this kick off for years although the idea was to send it to a wide player but usually went straight out giving up possession anyway ! Used to wind me right up .
