A rousing second-half display, an own goal for the ages, and two gilt-edged chances late on – Saffa Michail was at Deepdale on Monday to see QPR’s recent uptick continue. 4

Excellent report. You have to feel for Small. It was almost impossible to do that but he managed it.

Never knowingly right.
Poll: How long before new signings become quivering wrecks of the players they were?

Great summary of the game. Thought Kone was superb on Monday His touch which despite deserting him on Good Friday (He still worked his socks off ) was outstanding.
is becoming a real cult hero .
Love the fact Bennie is getting into such great goalscoring positions unlike his Aussie counterpart Lyndon who rarely did . For balance Dykes always did his best for us.

Had to laugh when JS casually called him Danny Bennie in his interview shows good team spirit which is really coming through last 4 games.
Bennie has real potential and great instinct but that is 2 or 3 games where he has multiple chances in the dying moments to grab winners but was not able to stay calm and find the corner of the net.
Still I like him

Thanks Saffa - Enjoyed reading that report.

Isn't it nice being in a position where we are not living on tenterhooks looking at Portsmouth and Oxford results but really looking forward to next season.

After the first half at Birmingham I was convinced we were being dragged into the dogfight.

Hats off to the management team and players for the recent results. My doctor is happy too as my blood pressure remains in the normal limits for a man of my age.

Funny that if we had lost every game since that match against Birmingham - we would still be six points above the relegation zone and looking pretty safe!

Not quite says I. Leicester would now be on 44pts (+3 to their total for beating us) and Pompey would be on 45 pts (also +3 for beating us) with a game in hand. So we'd be 3pts above the drop zone with a rubbish goal difference compared to Leicester. Just shows how fine the margins can be, and how well we have blasted clear - to the extent that the playoffs are not yet (totally) out of reach.

When we have this panic every spring everybody always assumes we're basically going to lose every game - that poll on here the other week stands testament to that, we ended up getting more points in a week than many people thought we'd get in two months.

And, look, I can see that. Watching that first half at Birmingham I couldn't see where a point was coming from. But even that cataclysmically bad Beale/Critchley/Ainsworth team ended up beating a couple of teams in the end. It's very rare you just lose every game forever - that season we basically did, we won two of 27 or something nuts, and still didn't go down.

I say this every year and a couple of times I've nearly ended up looking stupid but if you take this year as an example, with ten games to go, even if we'd lost eight of those, if we'd won the other two it would have left Oxford needing to win a good seven of their last ten games to catch us. Do Oxford look capable of that?

End of Feb, start of March, every midtable Championship football fan in the division reckons they're "at risk of getting dragged in". Sure, it can happen - Birmingham the other year. But if you're 13th/14th/15th in the first week of March then the maths tends to be on your side.

Yeah it was never going to happen.

Football discourse is always heavily focused on points totals (for understandable reasons), but the thinking is flawed. The number of team between you and the dotted line is a bigger factor, other teams do play each other and do/don’t get points as a result. And the points totals are always relative to the gaps between teams (look at top 6 last year vs top 6 this year, the spread is going to be half? A third? Sheff U finished 15 points or so more than Sunderland from memory).

Fundamentally, at our lowest point we still had a lot of traffic from us to bottom 3. For us to have been pulled in you’re looking not just at Oxford but 4/5 teams to suddenly be hitting 1.5ppg over 2 months + everyone else between us and that cohort somehow not being affected by that uptick in form. Traffic is king

That season when Ollie was in charge and we beat Forest on the final
day of the season was scary . So nearly got dragged down after an awful end to the season .

Again, though, safe with nothing to play for on the final day. That despite winning two of 11 through September and October, then losing six in a row under Holloway, then losing six in a row again through April. We lost seven of the last eight games and stayed up with three other teams between us and third bottom.

I get it but that first half at Birmingham had me worried big time.

Now four games later I’m looking forward to next season. Only at QPR.

I just wish I wasn’t so emotionally involved in this bloody football club.

Great post that sums up my feelings too .

It wasn’t just that bad first half at Birmingham , we were terrible for weeks and getting worse . That was the worry . Hard to recall a worse performance than that one although I’m sure there has been .
Easy now (for me) to look back and say “what were we worried about?”.
But the head coach looked thoroughly QPR’d and devoid of ideas on how to turn it around and the team were cratering badly .

The point made about teams between us and the dotted line is a good one though . Very hard for everybody to get the points to put us in serious trouble .

It does happen though and the fear is one day, it will be us . Hence my frustration at the last 10 years or more.

I remember when we were stuck on 47 in that shocking run of form and I suggested we would get nine more points (from 10 remaining games) to finish with the same total as last season and some questioned where we would get one from never mind nine! The we casually picked up 9 from the next three games - this club!

I was at Maine Road that day and lived to tell the tale.

I still laugh now when I see the flick and the header.

I think that goal kept us up.

A few months ago a few people were opining that Sheff Utd were not ony going to finish above us, but make the top 6 too. They were something like ten points behind at the time. I couldn't see the first of those happening, never mind the second, as it would have required both teams to experience a radical change in form.

As it happened we went a good way to fulfilling our part because of course we did, but they didn't do theirs despite coming to within 2-3 points difference. Six points behind now and they're still not finishing above us.

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?

I still shudder when I recall you stating that Lblock!

I know we will probably be ok when you start predicting that Rangers are doomed & that we won't survive without a minimum of 53 points, even though 47 in enough most seasons.

Please don't change.

For us to have been dragged into the dogfight then all the teams below us would have had to be transformed like Norwich so that was never going to happen. Other clubs like Sheffield Utd, who had recovered, have now started losing again.

It wasn't just the Birmingham game but also the three prior to it where we looked more like a league 2 outfit with consecutive heavy defeats that started the real anxiety. Since we made Middlesbrough look like Bayern Munich, they have played five and won none of them. We looked in awe of them but they have not had it so easy since. I don't think Birmingham have won either since our tailor's dummy display against them. I think we can be retrospectively excused for losing to Southampton who are in great form, scoring plenty and were too good for Arsenal.

Boro are a odd one though and an example of how barmy the championship can be. When we lost to them, the main stats from the game were:

V QPR 70% possession, 16 shots, 7 on target, 34 touches in oppo box. We had 9 shots, 3 on target

In their five games since they beat us, in which they haven't won (3 draws, 2 defeats) the same stats suggest they probably should have won at least 4 of those games comfortably, if not all 5.

V Charlton (lost 0-1) 77% possession, 34 shots, 7 on target, 86 touches in oppo box; 5 shots against, 2 on target

V Bristol City (drew 1-1) 68% possession, 19 shots, 7 on target, 36 touches in oppo box; 4 shots against, 1 on target

V Blackburn (drew 0-0) 71% possession, 12 shots, 3 on target, 36 touches in oppo box; 5 shots against, 1 on target

V Millwall (lost 1-2) 60% possession, 32 shots, 5 on target 66 touches in oppo box; 11 shots against, 5 on target

V Swansea (drew 2-2) 65% possession, 29 shots, 6 on target 48 touches in oppo box; 12 shots against, 3 on target

The thing is Boro took their chances against us like we did against Portsmouth. Boro have now gone 6 games without a win after we surrendered to them. My frustration with us is we have lost 11-2 to Boro in the last three meetings as if we are scared of them. Then you watch Portsmouth and Charlton beat them 1-0.

I heard Boro have only won once in their last 10 meetings with Portsmouth so perhaps we need to deny Boro any space when we meet instead of being wide open to pick apart. It's the fact that Blackburn, Portsmouth and Charlton can stop Boro scoring whereas we concede so easily against them that rankles.
