After reading the thread praising the David Byrne concert, i wonder of there's been a Best Live Albums thread. The Who Live At Leeds takes some beating. I'm aware that a certain amount of polishing up in the studio is done to such albums.
The so called 'great' bands live albums tend to be not so great, or certainly could be better, so for me it's.........
UFO - Strangers in the night. Michael Schenker's melodic solos are a joy. A rock band reaching the top of their game only for it all to go wrong. Lizzy's Live and Dangerous is a band also in their prime, a template live album. Deep Purple's Made In Japan goes on a bit at times but opens with Highway Star, a version that is difficult to better, The definitive live song.
Everything Everything by Underworld is a great live album, and probably the only dance music album I can think of where the live performance actually adds some thing
Also Headlights White Lines and Black Tar Rivers by the Levellers. Not everyone's cup of tea but every tune on that live album is my favourite version of that tune. Thr album has a weight and urgency to it that I really like, and there seems to be more bass across the whole album than on the studio equivalents
