Nothing against our cousins across the pond (apart from the orange nut job) but I really don’t get American football. Seems it’s getting more popular over here though.

I moved to the US 20 years ago and I got into it pretty quickly. The games are long but it's sort of on in the background all day Sunday for me. It's so popular everyone at work talks about it non stop during the season so I found it easy to get interested in it.

The BBC seems keen to get us interested. I have tried but just cannot connect with it and I understand it even less. I am probably the wrong age range now to be pulled in by it.

Be grateful the bods running the NFL are not running the FA. The prices for ordinary (not corporate) tickets for the Super Bowl tonight range from £750 for the worst seats - think back of the away section at Newcastle, to £7,500 for a seat just behind the teams, overlooking the 50-yard line. The most expensive non-corporate tickets for the FA Cup Final is around £200. OK, not quite the same thing as the Super Bowl is the League decider, that siad the difference in prices is staggering.

Like NYC Saint, I've been over here nearly 14 years.

NFL, as he says, is great to have on in the background and can be a really exciting watch - unless you're a long suffering fan of the Redksins (aka Commanders).

Superbowl is usually vastly overrated with crap HT performances and right now everything revolves around Taylor bloody Swift which is as annoying as can be.

We'll be watching this evening and hoping the 49ers put the Mahomes/Kelce/Swift hype down

It's boring and slow, but what's more boring is going on the BBC website to look at sport and seeing that as the headline. Ivory Coast just won afcon, there was 6 nations, Arsenal dicked West Ham 6-0 away and yet they headline with that boring trash.

They were saying on a preview show here in the UK last night, (that replaced our normal Football League highlights show!!!) that Mahomes earns $50m a year whereas his 49ers counterpart earns $850k - I'm with the 49ers then as everyone loves an underdog.
As for Taylor Swift, as it's in Vegas, SFC will see their Taylor Swift and raise them Seko Mara's Mum, Audrey Crespo-Mara

Generally have a Superbowl party every year, only thing that spoils it is watching the American Football.

Starts 1130, good cure for insomnia, be asleep by midnight.

I was over there a few years back when the New York Giants won it, the whole weekend was geared up for it and it was brilliant. The whole country seemed to tap into it, every bar was packed. I have loads of American family and they all make an occasion of it, regardless of who is in the final.

I can remember the FA Cup final over here having a similar appeal when I was a kid. The first one I proper remember was the 1981. My dad used to send the smaller kids out with my mum for the day, whilst all his mates cam round with ale, there’d be a sweep for first goals, bets on final score etc. it was great. I can’t remember when it became massively shit, but would hazard a guess at the late nineties. The pull of the big 6, using Wembley for the semis, the same dull teams winning it every year, silly kick off times.

It’s like most US sport a spectacle a show and they do that very well

That Mahomes is some player too, worth watching QB on Netflix to see him train

It ain’t soccer tho

I worked in the US from about 1988 to 1993. Mainly in San Fran but also in NYC and a short stint in Houston.

The 49ers were the San Fran team and I was taken along a few times and got into it. On the odd occasion I look at the scores now, they are still the first I look for.

The rules are not that bad but having five/six refs was a bit confusing.

The event in the US is huge in terms of TV audience and therefore advertising. It is hyped for weeks and often disappoints of course. It is also ridiculous calling it the world championship when the game as played in the US is light years ahead of the same game elsewhere.

Washed up on the tide in San Francisco in the mid seventies, coincidentally on Super Bowl weekend when the 49ers were playing.
Had no idea about gridiron but by the end I knew all about it and never had to buy a drink 👍😃

In fairness there is only ref and then a number of line judges, etc. Much like refs and assistant refs/4th officials over here.

You would have gone to the 49ers old stadium at Candlestick Park which was renowned for being freezing despite being in California.

San Fran was usually cold. Even in sunny days the wind off the ocean was a downer.

NYC was also cold (winter of 89/90) but I was promised hot summer weather - until I got moved to Houston where is was too hot to go outside for long! then back to San Fran.

I think it was Candlestick Park. I recall it being a decent drive out and an old stadium.

The group I was with stopped at what we would call an off licence on the way, stocked up on beer and walked straight past the "security" and the signs saying that only drinks bought in the stadium could be consumed in your seat.

The 49ers won the Superbowl in 1989 and the city went bonkers. Not sure they've really matched it since.
