| Cooper will be with us next season. on 14:37 - Feb 3 by A_Fans_Dad | Yes he had something about him for the U17s world cup. The best youngsters at that age that UK money could buy. Trained by their home clubs to a very high standard. His contribution was minimal as part of World Cup managerial team. Our young players have gone backwards under him which is extremely worrying, how long before he affects the newcomers the same way? |
Playing against the best players at that age in other countries money could buy. It’s not as if he had any bigger advantage with the best under 17 English players as Southgate currently has playing the best English players against the best French, Belgian, Brazilian etc players. You’re pretty much agreeing with the rest of my post, he is struggling now he has to look at formations, tactics and try to outwit opponents in real time, rather than just cloning the Liverpool/England senior set up. Quite a worrying thought, is he actually taking these players backwards, or was Potter getting more out of them than the average coach would? Were they playing above themselves last season? Grimes was one of last seasons success stories, he had been on loan at Leeds and not done too well prior to that.
| Cooper will be with us next season. on 15:32 - Feb 3 with 1047 views | TimTtam | He's got a lot of improving to do. But lets hope he can improve and learn. Under Potter we were pretty average until the new year when we started to find our best form, especially from March onwards. And to those who think we'd be in the automatic promotion places if we still had Potter as manager, I seriously doubt it. Firstly we wouldn't have signed any of the players we have this season. Secondly under Potter we were wasteful in front of goal and showed no clinical edge (Brighton are suffering the same problem). And finally, Brighton are 2 points above the relegation zone and many Brighton fans want Potter sacked. | |

Played for a draw, against them in that state for God's sake. I just think he has a "do not lose" mentality and I think that may be a hard thing to shift. It's boring and predictable too. At this rate he could play Clyde alongside Clint Eastwood (almost). Coat and jacket on.

Grimes had a good full season with Northampton immediately prior to coming back to us, he didn't go straight from flopping at Leeds to being our player of the season.

Well sure if hypothetically Potter wouldn't have signed any players because only Steve Cooper is able to get PL loans for some reason then we might've struggled a bit, yeah.

I’m not saying he isn’t but he’s going to have a very difficult job on his hands the way the club is being run. VdH gone. Ayew probably gone. Rodon possibly gone. All the loanees gone. Several players out of contract. Think about it and it might just sound tad worrying. [Post edited 3 Feb 2020 16:33]

Yeah fair enough. He had a season where he flopped at Leeds, followed by a season at a club that got relegated to league two, then was one of the better midfielders in the championship last season. Now he’s doing ok, his stats show he gets the passes and his tackles in, but you rarely come away from a game thinking he had a stormer. So was last season his normal level and the three surrounding it have been disappointing, or was his normal standard elevated last season?

Jimmy Floyd-Hasselbaink was very complimentary of Grimes, had a good season there despite the team's poor run, and Jimmy was confident that he'd do well in a good passing side. Grimes himself says his time there got him back on track. No real basis for claiming he had a disappointing season. “Off the back of my spell at Leeds, my confidence was on the floor,” said Grimes. “I didn’t want anything to do with football at all. If there was any on the television, I’d flick it off straightaway. It even got to the point where I wasn’t even watching Match of The Day. I just couldn’t stand to be around it. “So It was probably the most important year in my career to go from such a low to playing every week. Everything about it fit into place for me. That loan spell is probably the reason why I’m in the situation that I am today." | | | | Login to get fewer ads
| Cooper will be with us next season. on 17:33 - Feb 3 with 923 views | glanmORJa_k | It didn't go well for Grimes at Blackburn either. The worrying aspect of Potter's reign is if he had signed further shit players like McKay, Asoro, and most probably would have given a new contract to the worst keeper we have had(Nordfeldt) since Stevie Potter. Grimes, Celina and Byers had an excellent season in 2018/19, yet are some way from that consistency this season. They need to take a good luck at themselves with arguably much better players around them this season. | | | |
| Cooper will be with us next season. on 17:46 - Feb 3 with 907 views | monmouth | I admit I haven't taken to Cooper. but he will certainly be here next year unless we totally collapse. Is he the man to do something extraordinary like Rodgers, Martinez, Laudrup.....not in a million years. Coopers are ten a penny down FA badge school in my view. Would I want him leading the rebuild? Absolutely not. I'm wrong at least as often as I'm right, so I'll happily take a contemptuous, derisive, bump or ten this time next year. | |

| Cooper will be with us next season. on 18:33 - Feb 3 with 860 views | Neath_Jack | HE can't get a proper tune out of the players we have now, I'll be shocked if he suddenly realises what to do with talented players next year, when in all likelihood we are going to be a lot weaker than we are now. In the weakest Championship I've seen, and with the current squad we've got, we should be doing a lot better than we are (and that's not even mentioning the boring, one dimensional way we play). How the f*ck we are where we are in the league is quite baffling. We are stuck with him no matter what though, even if we went down next year I don't think we'd get shot. | |

Signed a 3 year contract wont be going anywhere for a while. If he was to go who could we hope to attract realistically that would play a more expansive game. Rangel maybe [Post edited 3 Feb 2020 18:54]

I'm not saying Potter was the worlds greatest, I'm just saying that his football was exactly what our club needed, and what it needs to compete is a different approach than others, I actually think Potter was short changed by not being able to use Routs,Dyer,Ayew and Borja last season, if he had those players then their experience would have helped no end and would have helped progress us further. No manager coming to us will be perfect, but I feel scfc needs that footballing identity to energise its fans and Cooper falls well short on this. I'm not even that interested in promotion quite frankly. Last seasons football was great to watch and that's how it should be .

Pretty much agree with this. The only ways a manager tends to leave are by sacking or poaching. Short of a spectacular collapse, I don’t think our owners have anywhere near enough ambition or commitment to pay him off. He’s hardly going to be giving many PL chairmen much food for thought either.

He wasn't. Decent, far better than he had been for us thus far, but nowhere near our best player. Well behind Oli Mac and Dan James in terms of influence on our play. Him winning POTY was right up there with Ki winning in it terms of WTF'ness.
