| Piers this morning on 13:08 - Apr 16 by londonlisa2001 | The only thing I would point out when looking at other countries, is they are geographically different. The largest city in Germany (Berlin) has only 3.5m people. London has 9m. Birmingham (the conurbation) has close to 3m, Greater Manchester over 2m. The UK has the same population as France and is less than half the size. We have a very concentrated population, largely based in big cities, with a small rural population. Look at Wales, where the population is heavily focused on the Swansea, Cardiff, Newport artery. That’s allowed spread in a different way to that experienced in other countries. When you look at New York, compared to London, our cases are low. That doesn’t detract from the need, as stated, for an independent enquiry. As I suggested the other day, I’d put Lady Hale in charge. |
That is true. Berlin is the same size as London but hell of a lot less crowded. However, Germany does have a lot more small and medium cities- 200,000 to a million than the U.K., which may mean more local hotspots. Perhaps Germany is more insular- Frankfurt is the main hub airport then Munich not Berlin

Good on him and he deserves recognition. But not for tasing £12million for the NHS. The funding should be coming from the taxes that corporations and individuals are allowed to evade and by reversing some of the tax breaks for the richest. I genuinely worry these event are masking the nasty truth of underfunding, poor pay and conditions that our key workers endure and the rank incompetence of government. As many are pointing out you don't need to be any expert to identify failings. I would prefer a rise of my 40% tax rate next year to 45%. Would bring in billions and I would lose perhaps £25 each month. |
As wonderful as what Captain Tom has done, and it really is incredible, I cannot donate to this and have given to Macmillan nurses instead. https://www.macmillan.org.uk/

You are right that an island should be able to use Quarantine more effectively. But New Zealand has a very small population and far fewer visitors/flyers compared to the UK. They did exactly the right thing.

Lisa - we did the wrong things. Its that simple. Of course, every nation is different, but the uk govt deliberately took different actions in contrast to the rest of the world. Then they changed direction after the damage was done. One person even said that the clear WHO guidance of ‘test, test, test’ did not apply to advanced nations like the UK. There was no caveat on the WHO advice. I do like your suggestion for the right person to chair the proposed inquiry.

Yes add to the fact New Zealand is literally in the middle of nowhere, thousands of miles from anything else. It’s just non comparable. This obsession with measuring ourselves against other countries needs to stop. It’s just not helpful.

I didn't realise Berlin was that small. I was more thinking of the way Angela Merkel described the need to keep social distancing in place to slow the spread of the virus. She's obviously got far more of an understanding than anyone in our government.

Take Belgium, they have carried out twice the number of tests as us per head of population but their death rate per head of population is more than double ours. In fact, it’s worse than Spain and Italy’s.

Sadly on a per capita basis compared with the UK population Belgium would have 30,000 deaths. There seem to be big variations in Europe. Belgium has around 50 percent more deaths than China. [Post edited 16 Apr 2020 15:24]

Well yes.....unless we do better than other countries of course, then it would be all over the propaganda outlets, and all the rage by government apologists on here. As prof has so eloquently pointed out, we don't need to compare with anyone to show that Johnson and his shower are absolutely, not relatively, incompetent.

Again Belgium were always doomed to be hit because Brussels like London has an awful lot of people moving around, in and out every day.

Of course we have. But, at present, we have a lower death rate than the other major European countries except for Germany who are reporting completely differently (they are only reporting deaths from Covid when they are specifically from Covid - we are reporting when it is a factor, irrespective of cause of death). We will only know who has done well and not in a year or so. Not now. The issue New Zealand have is they are completely unable to open again. The main focus here is on keeping under NHS capacity and that’s been done so far. Criticising for the sake of it is bonkers. And I can’t stand Johnson and the rest of them.

At the moment we are doing better than the other European nations (except for a Germany, and no one can compare the two due to reporting). The issue with the earlier lockdown argument (as I said previously, I’d have locked us down weeks before) is that you don’t know the effect it would have had. Given everyone is clamouring to lift lockdown now, if we’d been in it for 2 weeks earlier, it may have ended up worse. The long term effect of a lockdown that’s longer than necessary can’t be underestimated. Deaths from other causes are up by quite a way, and the suspicion is that it’s because of the lockdown - people are scared to go to hospital. And the economic impact can’t be ignored. People being left destitute is a real issue, and a longer lockdown would lead to more of those instances. It’s all hugely complicated but no one knows how we’re doing until the end of all this. Which won’t be for a year or so.

Hancock is working hard to get his job done. Of course mistakes have been made. It’s a first. Definite answers aren’t available to an ongoing indefinite rapidly changing position. Hancock was right to query footballers and their salaries when at present they are in the main only sitting around doing nothing. And since then some progress has been made. Piers Morgan is a bully. And last time I looked no one likes a bully. By the way is Morgan taking a pay cut as I’m sure he would agree it’s justifiable.

It does appear, that worldwide, socialist leaning countries have been more successful than the free market ones. Not sure if there's anything to take from this, but just an observation
