Whether you have faith or not, you shouldn't dismiss that some Bible stories are excellent vehicles for teaching morality and citizenship. Also, and this is important, young children love listening to them!
If you've had a week where there's been some unkindness on the playground, having an assembly based on The Good Samaritan is a great way of looking at kindness to all, not just your friends.
The story of Jonah is fantastic at looking at not running away from your problems. These are just a couple of examples Primary aged children love.
I'm not for one minute suggesting any kind of indoctrination or forced compliance, but as a atheist working in a church school, I can see the value of the Bible as a resource in setting the ethos of the setting. But that's what it is - a resource. It needs to be picked from and supplemented with other material to produce rounded kids.

Prove it.
Your plutomaniacal take on the Parable of the Good Samaritan would hold a certain grim fascination mind, where instead of stopping to help the stricken traveller our man kicks him when he’s down and steals the little he has left.
The teacher, let’s call him Mr Lawson, can then stand in front of the class and declaim “you see children what matters is the content of your wallet not your character.”
An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.

Why isn't there a simple 'no' response to this? I don't understand why everyone takes every swipe at religion they can, most religious people don't force their views on you or force you to believe the same as them. I believe, but I don't mock those who do not. If someone chooses to believe different to you, then move on..
So you don’t think that there should be a Christian religious element/worship in 2020 school assemblies then?

That proves nothing.
You can look in any fiction piece of work and pick out something like that.
Have another go.

Let's make Judaism or Islam or even Scientology , our main guiding influence instead shall we?

The bible isn't presented as fiction though. Saying that, I once met a vicar who said you couldn't take the bible literally because it had been rewritten so many times...does that show a lack of faith that his God was guiding the authors hand?
We aren't religious, we allowed our son to go to Sunday school with his friends until the day he came back saying he'd been told that anybody who didn't go to church was a bad person. That's not teaching morality, that's teaching fear, fear as a tool to make people obey.
You don't need the bible to teach morality, just look at all the good deeds done around us every day right now and many of those 'good Samaritans' won't be church goers.

Read it, Bryn. The language is exquisite.
Yes, the language, and also the moral values on the new testament, but the nonsense about putting up with imposed cruelties from the privileged in society in return for a heavenly afterlife, Jesus!

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Do schools even need assemblies? What purpose do they serve?
In my experience they serve an important purpose - to numb and stultify young minds so that they're too etiolated to question the nonsense spouted by a great number of unthinking, unreflective teachers.

Yeah - it’s just a book though.
If you want exquisite language, buy a book by Henry James or Herman Melville.
PS Or Michael Foot.

I'd agree about Henry James, though most people would find it pretty heavy going these days. Melville only managed to sell just over 3000 copies of Moby Dick in his lifetime and the book shows signs of the intense rush he was in to get it done. Nevertheless it's n astonishing work. People should also read The Confidence Man - much lighter, very funny and tack sharp.

I'd like to give you an extra uparrow for etiolated.

Criticism of the good lord allowing his flock to be ravaged by the Coronavirus has been markedly absent from the clergy who are normally most effuse in their praise of his achievements.
Of course the clergy do have a marked financial interest in persuading others to carry on believing in the old 'You can't see him but he's all around us" convenient fund raising nonsense.

I’ve got a backpack under the stairs I take up the mountain with the hounds. Alongside my trusty Kelly Kettle there’s an old copy of Juvenal’s Satires. I like to sit up there with a brew and read where it’s nice and quiet.
If it’s language deployed with genuine artistry you enjoy then Juvenal is a great way to while away the hours.

True but there are also many stories in the Bible that you certainly wouldn't want your children to take on board.

Jesus replies with a story:
Jesus answered, "A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who both stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead. By chance a certain priest was going down that way. When he saw him, he passed by on the other side. In the same way a Levite also, when he came to the place, and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he travelled, came where he was. When he saw him, he was moved with compassion, came to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. He set him on his own animal, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the host, and said to him, 'Take care of him. Whatever you spend beyond that, I will repay you when I return.' Now which of these three do you think seemed to be a neighbor to him who fell among the robbers?"
