Should there be a Christianreligious element/ worship in 2020 school assemblies? on 17:41 - May 1 by Neath_Jack
No answer to my reply to you then?
Apologies, I missed your response.
I’ve no issue and have used morals based stories from the Torah and Quran as well as the Bible to illustrate points and get messages across. That shouldn’t be a surprise as there’s so much crossover between the three texts.
I don’t know enough about Scientology to comment and to be fair I don’t think I need to.
Again, I’m not advocating teaching faith and I personally don’t have one. I’m just pointing out that children love the stories and they are very useful in getting points across.
As I replied to Humpty, there is also a huge amount of content that is hugely inappropriate and has no place in schools.

Decouple it from any fake nonsense about sky pixies and teach them citizenship, ethics and personal responsibilities. Alongside life skills like personal finance and how to navigate life. job done.
The fake son of a fake god is absolutely unnecessary as a crutch in doing that.

I am decoupling it from faith.
I’m trying to get across (unsuccessfully) is that children like the stories and their a good way of getting points across.
Nothing to to with believing or not in anything.

You are explaining it fine.
I think your point is a valid one - kids do love the stories and they can teach important lessons. As long as lessons are also taught about open mindedness, difference and tolerance, which is sadly lacking from many religious texts (all faiths).

It is quite possible to teach good life lessons to children without using bible stories or those from other faiths and the like and there are many modern era books which are very good children's stories which my children enjoyed and they also teach good life lessons, such as:-
Corduroy by Don Freeman The Lorax by Dr Seuss Matilda by Roald Dahl Have You Filled a Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud Elmer by David McKee Dancing in the Wings by Debbie Allen The Family Book by Todd Parr The Huge Bag of Worries by Virginia Ironside How Are You Feeling Today? by Molly Potter Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome

Children love stories from all manner of places, there is no need to coax them into religious teachings. The way you are describing it, is just introducing them to religion stealthily.
Once the vulnerable are hooked into that nonsense, many find it impossible to leave, mostly through fear.
It's a load of old fanny that the modern world can do without.
I want a mate like Flashberryjacks, who wears a Barnsley jersey with "Swans are my second team" on the back.

Jesus replies with a story:
Jesus answered, "A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who both stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead. By chance a certain priest was going down that way. When he saw him, he passed by on the other side. In the same way a Levite also, when he came to the place, and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he travelled, came where he was. When he saw him, he was moved with compassion, came to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. He set him on his own animal, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the host, and said to him, 'Take care of him. Whatever you spend beyond that, I will repay you when I return.' Now which of these three do you think seemed to be a neighbor to him who fell among the robbers?"
He said, "He who showed mercy on him."
Then Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."
– Luke 10:30—37, World English Bible
No mention of " kicking when he's down."
The problem you have there is you’ve either not properly read or understood the post you’re attempting to respond to.
Thanks for your input nonetheless.

It’s not my intention to describe it in this way. All manner of stories make for rounded individuals.

No problem , glad you appreciate my contribution we Neath boys obviously have an understanding of world matters. How is the beautiful St. David's Church looking these days, hope it hasn't gone over to the "Happy Clappy " brigade ? 😟

Yes that's true but for me the big difference will always be that 'The Lorax' can be used but it's obviously a work of fiction whereas when the bible stories are used they are quite often presented as fact; that's despite the bible being so full of contradictions that if you really did take it literally you'd be more mixed up than a bag of skittles. it's an eye for an eye but turn the other cheek; thou shalt not kill yet not permit a witch to live, it's ridiculous. Then again, my experience of many churchgoers I knw when I was younger that going to church must have been to advertise they were good people when quite clearly many of them weren't. No, school doesn't need to push religion on kids. Teach about them, all of them but that's all.

Again, I agree.
I’ve clearly done a poor job of getting my points across so I’ll make one last attempt before bowing out gracefully.
Things I’ve said: 1) Bible stories can be good at getting across points on morality and citizenship and children enjoy them 2) Other religious texts can do this too 3) So can non religious books 4) A mixture of all can be used to without prejudice
Things I haven’t said: 1) Any of the above should be prioritised over the other 2) Religious stories should be presented as fact 3) Children should be made to listen to them when attending church schools 4) That I have any kind of personal faith - no skin in the game as it were
I don’t really see what’s controversial about this so I’ll bow out ðŸ‘

I'm not claiming that you said any of the second 4 though. It's just that my experience of it has been as I have posted. At our sons previous school religion had been pushed at assemblies, kids were told not believing in God was bad, good people had faith.

Apologies, Catt.
It’s was more of a generic reply and not directed at you.
There’s no good reason (in my opinion) your boy should have had that message.

It’s a beautiful building as you know. Attendance there is holding up pretty well all things considered and it still provides for those who appreciate a traditional service, not a tambourine in sight!

I forgot 'Holes' by Louis Sachar, a fantastic read that my children loved, a good one for adults too.

I’ve got a backpack under the stairs I take up the mountain with the hounds. Alongside my trusty Kelly Kettle there’s an old copy of Juvenal’s Satires. I like to sit up there with a brew and read where it’s nice and quiet.
If it’s language deployed with genuine artistry you enjoy then Juvenal is a great way to while away the hours.
I'm over my Juvenal phase. I rejoyce in more mature pleasures these days.
