| VE plans then on 14:57 - May 8 by Highjack | I understand what you’re saying but perhaps one of the reasons this anniversary is quite poignant is because it’s possibly the last big one we’ll have with veterans still alive. By the time the 80th comes around in 2025 a lad who was 20 when war ended will be over 100. It’s worth celebrating just for that reason. |
If people continue to flout the rules by having parties there'll be even fewer veterans left to celebrate the 76th anniversary. [Post edited 9 May 2020 11:23]

| (No subject) (n/t) on 23:56 - May 8 by jack_lord | There is no intrinsic difference between 73,74,75 and 76 years. There is, however strangely, some kind of significance on celebrations like three quarters of a century and as there will be in 25 years time when it is the centenary. The remembrance of the end of the first world war in 2018 was another year but a hundred years and hugely significant for people. So very many people lost their lives during both wars and something like the commemoration of the day we retained our freedom, not bossing people because they haven't paid their council tax or road fund licence, has to be congratulated and recognised. It just happens to be a little bit more so particular anniversaries. [Post edited 9 May 2020 0:21]

As I said, the quiet silence, laying of the wreath etc is all good. Celebrating the defeat of the Nazis in Europe all good. The Queen making a speech all good for those that find comfort in her words. It’s the media driven ‘street party’ element that to me seemed somewhat inappropriate this year. That’s the bit that should have been delayed. Unless the pictures on social media are a misrepresentation, which is always very possible, some of it seemed verging on complete stupidity. In much the same way as no one celebrated the 25th anniversary of the end of the First World War in 1943. Events overtake you. [Post edited 9 May 2020 11:30]

None of us can wait to be able to celebrate. For most of us with family and friends we won’t have been able to see for months. Going for a picnic after a walk and a drink in a beer garden will be bliss. We’ll never get there unless the infection rate is controlled.
| VE plans then on 11:38 - May 9 with 669 views | dickythorpe | The key to controlling the infection rate will be "keeping an eye" on travellers. How it will be done is another headache. Possibly if you live in Carmarthenshire for example you'll only be able to travel to neighbouring countries but no further. Again it's a beautiful day outside and I am grateful I have a garden, but I'm missing the magnificent Gower and Pembrokeshire views. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Unfortunately we are all affected by the actions of the everyone else and the people that think the virus somehow took a day off yesterday to celebrate the events of 75 years ago will end up keeping the rest of us locked up for far longer. It’s not political correctness it’s common sense.

It brought massive cheer to millions of people, even by just seeing all the bunting and flags up. There are always going to be people that will pay little regard for the guidelines though, whether they are a VE party, a summer piss up in the garden or any other type. What the government need to do, is sort the f*cking testing in care homes out, that is the real tragedy here. In fact, these parties will be another excuse for the government to use to hide their failings in the care sector. [Post edited 9 May 2020 12:37]

Most are private, for me they employ lesser trained staff with lower pay expectations, ok I’m not saying all but some of the practices in these care homes regards, sanitisation, understanding protocols for hygiene, general care can be so far below the standard it doesn’t surprise me how many elderly are dying. I am aware of the dedicated staff etc, but from my experience they are not that noticeable. I wouldn’t put my parents in to a care home now if they were alive. No way. Too low a standard.

How can the government sort out testing in care homes in Wales? Testing in care homes throughout the UK has been a shambles from the start, but while the situation is at least massively improved in England (from a very low base) no one seems to blame the Welsh government for anything at all? And people will always use an excuse for a party, but some of what went on yesterday was insane. not helped by the Mail et al describing partying Brits as ‘defiant’ as though it was a matter of honour.

What? I'm talking about the Welsh Government, who have devolved powers. They can sort it out by carrying out more testing, especially in those places that have had several deaths! You commented on a link i posted last week about the lack of testing. It's an absolute disgrace. Of course they will use any excuse, bank holiday, nice weather, whatever. Some will do it responsibly other's won't. It was ever thus.

You know why most are private. When the community care act came in local authorities were required to meet minimum standards like private and charitable homes. Many local authorities immediately sold off or closed many of their homes because they knew they couldn't meet minimum standards. Previously they inspected their own homes but now they were inspected by the independent care home inspectors.

Apologies, I thought you were talking about the UK government. Normally people specify if they are talking about the situation in Wales when they use the term ‘government’. I don’t understand, as I’ve said a few times, why the Welsh government are refusing to test anyone. In any setting as far as I can tell. Awful though the testing is here, it’s so much better than the situation in Wales it’s a joke. The problem with the virus, unlike many other situations where we can largely control the effect on ourselves, is that all of us are having our lives directly impacted by the stupidest, most irresponsible people in society. Those that had huge parties yesterday, spurred on by our disgusting press, will lead to all of us being locked up for longer. It’s pathetic.

Not all was my point. It’s hard to generalise with private homes who run on very poorly paid staff, like in all industry. And yet in private medicine it’s the opposite, better pay for private health workers etc, better standards by far. The quality commission who regulate and investigate this area seem to be toothless at times.

I've got it in the back of mind that the UK government would have factored in a percentage of people not adhering to the guidelines, or surely, they would have strictly forbidden them? Maybe I'm being naive. I want this lockdown lifted as much as anyone else, it's my grandsons second birthday next week, and other than seeing him through a car window twice, I've not properly seen him since this all kicked off. This is the reason I'm a bit spikey today, I saw him this morning and it is killing me not being able to pick him up and give him a massive cwtch. Let's hope there isn't another spike in a week or so.

I largely agree with your sentiments. Armistice day was observed as far as I know during the Second World War and may well have been celebrated at a greater level but, as you say, events overtake you. Yes , the media have driven the celebrations but, as it was a significant milestone, then sensible celebration on the day cannot be such an acrimonious issue. Of course, many new infections because of such celebrations would obviously put my thoughts way out of line. Is it just that people need some kind of pick me up without a reckless flaunting of the rules?

England seems to be getting the biggest hammering though, yes more of a population but the U.K. as a whole seems to be falling slower than the rest of Europe. A complete aside but anything that affects the communities here is dealt with ‘locally’ That is one reason for me here we don’t get as many Kyle Walker situations, the threat of a ... Warning be that drugs or in all areas of community safety generally seems to work, and it happens every day here.

I've definitely read somewhere that most models work on an estimate of less than 100% compliance. It'll be interesting to see what happens if there isn't a spike even after all these parties.
