This is what is happening in China at the moment. 500,000 Tibetans forced into labour camps. Not to mention the Uyghur Muslims that are being rounded up onto trains and put into camps in an attempt to ethically cleanse the country.
In Iran people have been hung this week for ACTUALLY peacefully protesting, not the CNN version of peaceful protests.
So while the NBA and LeBron James are stirring racial tensions in the West by pushing a false oppression narrative that absolutely nobody can articulate (whilst taking huge contracts from China and banning anyone speaking out about them)... take a moment to actually reflect on what racism, oppression and slavery ACTUALLY is.
These people crying oppression are some of the most privileged people in the world today. The privilege and freedom enjoyed that has enabled them to burn cities to the ground, intimidate politicians and attack civilian political opposition with impunity and no real threat of consequence is incredible.
For shame.

Fun facts of the day for you, Killy: By November 1846 the British government was spending approximately £110,000 a week on famine relief, or 27% of the entire national budget! Secondly, in February 1847 it decides to take out an £8million loan, known as the 'Irish loan', to fund famine relief. An astronomical sum at the time.
That isn’t what genocide looks like. What happened in Killarney isn’t the same as the horror deliberately visited on Kiev.
I just read something, 9.5M spent on famine relief and 69M spent a few years later on the Crimean war.

An interesting metric to see would be one that compares expenditure on distressed areas in the ‘30s, on public work schemes to alleviate unemployment versus that disbursed on carpet-bombing German civilians?
An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.

Ireland was part of the UK and the English let them starve, most of the land was owned by the English (that's another story) with the Irish being tennent famers, the food was taken at gunpoint from the Irish by the English army, 67 out of a total of 130 regiments overseen the pillage of the food, more than half the entire army was over there to secure the food. It was genocide, I'm not aware of any Irish in my family tree but what the English did to them was shocking, glad I'm Welsh.
Was not genocide by the English people. All over the UK power was in the hands of a few . The ordinary citizens of the UK did not have a vote at the time and were exploited by the ruling classes which included English, Scottish and Irish , probable a few Welsh in there as well.
You only have to look at Wales, where a scottish marquis had total ownership of most of the mines and exploited the miners. He made a vast fortune despite causing the deaths of thousands of Welsh miners who worked in terrible unhealthy conditions. For some reasons the Welsh made a hero of him and he praised as a benefactor for building most of Cardiff including it's Victorian castle and bute park, bute docks, butetown. How about removing these or at least renaming them. I am sure there must be statues of the Marquis of bute in Cardiff or Wales.
He did more harm than Colston ever did in Bristol.

Correct most of the land was owned by British Nationals all residents in Ireland were British as it was part of the UK at the time. Most of the land was farmed by Tennant farmers who were free to grow whatever crops they could sell. The cause of the famine was due to a mono crop culture in part due to ignorance of crop disease at the time.
I should have clarified I meant British as of today, I tried to include Scottish and Welsh. I belive there are some Welsh lords who had Irish possessions (by Welsh I mean those that are descendants of Normans awarded Welsh lands about 800 years ago).

I will still call it an atrocity because when tens of thousands were starving the evidence says that food exports to Britain from Ireland actually increased. This country literally took food from the starving. We didn't create the blight but our behaviour during that period was disgraceful.
Respect.

There was plenty of food in Ireland during the famine. Unfortunately the Irish landowners prefered to export it the UK rather than give it away to their own people. It was the same in the UK rich landowners did not see it as their responsibility to feed the poor.
Another Irish myth.

With respect Loh, this is not about money.
The English government allowed over 1 million Irish men, women, and children to die of starvation. Not 100’s or 1000’s, but a million people dead. Unimaginable cruetly. People eating grass to try to stay alive.
Another 1.5 million fled.
The Westminster government oversaw all of this and did nothing to stop it.

What you should be calling it is Irish land owned mostly by English upper classes and the Anglo-Irish. The Irish were reduced to little more than feudal farmers during the period. Many were evicted from their farms because they couldn't manage the "rent" and many fled to the new world to escape the tyranny.

'Irish landowners sending food to britain during the famine rather than feed their own'
Jesus christ FJ needs a history lesson
Have you ever seen the "Histories biggest fibs? with Lucy Worsley? It's good stuff. Thinsg I was taught in school that were just wrong. To be fair she has a lot to work with.
As the saying goes, history is written by the victors. The narrative is controlled by the winners and the masses treated like mushrooms.

In my experience it's people of immigrant stock that are the most racist people, it's ironic that often these people of immigrant stock don't want anymore immigrants let in.

In my experience the british are very welcoming to people who enter the country legally and who are willing to work hard. The British have always taken in genuine refugees.

Nearly 75 years of the Welfare state and we still have widespread poverty, according to official figures. This is 2 years old now but will things have gotten better or worse?

and it IS true those deemed to be "in poverty" possess the latest mobile phones, meg tellies and gorge on shyte and normally have the Gut to show it.
It is also true many in poverty are there because of their own sloth;that ssaid, the true "poverty" lies in low but just over minimum waged earners who are the only bread winner.
These are the families that really need help. These families often do not cry poverty either but get on with doing what they can to progress in life.

Tar everyone with the same brush eh?
Most of this forum dont see poverty in this country, they only see a certain percentage and tar everyone who lives on council estates.
Both myself and especially my wife see the real picture, that's why we both know there is poverty in this country.
But you lot crack on eh.

We have a generation of lower than average earners who work their bollocks off whilst feckles fookers do nothing but wait for the State benefits. You know this a you see it in your job so don't make out it aint the case.
You could be accused ,because of your political views of tarring everyone with the same brush too.
People who do their best, who work their rocks off, take risks are the ones we should truly look after and support in these times.
