What we do know is that the figures are increasing everywhere in Wales including West Wales. It started increasing in August and has continued since. Pembrokeshire is current 50.1 per 100,000 over the last 7 days and no students there. This is above the figure being used for local lockdowns. Carmarthenshire is 68.3 and Vale of Glamorgan 51.7. The only 2 counties below 50 are Powys with 48.3 which is higher than Neath Port Talbot was when it was placed in local lockdown and Ceredigion with 27.5. Compare this with 2 months ago when the average Welsh Figure was 3.2 and most were well below that.

Without going into the South West figures i attach an article

https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/

As far as students some will travel in to every university but those will live in the communities. The vast majority of students live close to the university and city. That is why places like Brynmill and Uplands have huge numbers of students and Pontardawe and Dunvant very few. I have lived in both Dunvant and Pontardawe areas so know them well and used to pass through Sketty and Uplands on the way to work.

There are no statistics on students but it is well known that most of the students in Swansea live within a couple of mile radius of the city centre. If you speak to them that is what you will find. It is the same in Cardiff where Roath, Cathays and Penylan are full of students but areas like Lisvane, Llanishen and Thornhill have very few. Similarly in Exeter nearly all students lived within a 2 mile distance of the university campuses and city centre. My son was at Exeter and the vast majority walked to university and lived in the Pinhoe Road, City Centre or St Davids areas.

It is absolutely clear that students are not the main reason for new cases increasing. It started before they came and has continued after. They are part of a wider problem but certainly not the main cause.

An extract from the link you pasted.

"It's understood an outbreak of cases around the university campus in Exeter has pushed up the rate for the South West region."

You missed my point about people traveling from outlying areas to WORK in the student areas many working in the universities itself.

Look we will just agree to differ.
You through your background are clearly obsessed with numbers and statistics, not your fault it is just the way it is.
I travel throughout the UK all areas, all Wales, North, Mid and South of England and am still doing it through necessity at the moment. I speak to and listen to people of all social and economic backgrounds and can only go by what I hear and see to form an opinion.
I am not saying I am right but it is just an opinion I have formed from my experiences over the last couple of months.

As far as Exeter is concerned it was at one time higher than Liverpool or Manchester but they reckoned 80% of the cases there were Exeter students but then Exeter is quite a large university in a smallish city so it will affect the cases more. It hasnt just been Exeter though. Places like North and Mid Devon and Bath and North Somerset were showing high cases a couple of weeks ago in the last figures that I saw. There has been problems at Bristol university too and there has been protests there from student about having to pay accommodation fees and not being allowed to go out. Honestly students have been hung out to dry and have been losers in this. The students in Bristol were told there was blended learning and it hadnt happened. They were paying over £9000 a year fees for basically an online learning course. They had come to university and came to live in the area to attend lectures and basically could have done the online learning course at home and not had to pay the not inconsiderable accommodation fees of in excess of £5000 grand a year. It appears this has been done to save universities and I can understand students being fed up.

Auckland is bigger than any city in the UK outside London.

Maybe, the Kiwis are more sensible, and certainly united as a nation that sees them behave as they have in this pandemic.

Little ,if any political infighting,no Corbyns,Burnhams to worry about.

No demos against wearing masks, and social distancing not seen as infringement of human rights. And this under a "Labour " Government.

Our Labour party needs to look at how they work for the country ALL of the people, not just labour voters. It s also the case the opposition in NZ isnt refered to as "scum".

Hell, they might not have class war.

Auckland bigger population wise than Birmingham and Manchester ?, not according to some Google searches, there might even be a debate about Leeds and Glasgow on that front as well.

I agree students have been hung out to dry and are getting a really poor deal, I do feel for them, but doesn't mean they are not spreading the virus. As you stated yourself 80% of the cases in Exeter were students.

The population of auckland covers an area 4 times larger than Birmingham so is population density is only 1 third that of Birmingham as Auckland includes a lot of the surrounding countryside.

City of Manchester is about the 10th of the area of Auckland although greater Manchester is about the same size as Auckland but had a larger population. The city of London is only 1square mile and has a very small population. While greater London is larger.

Once again the statistics can prove whatever point you want to make but for a true comparison you must compare like with like.

Cardiff which has by far the biggest student coronavirus issue in Wales. It has just over 700 cases out of 2700. Approximately 1 in 4. Students arent the main reason. Other reasons but students are also part of it to a lesser degree. Cardiff has 320 cases per 100,000. Next to them is Merthyr Tydfil with 290.1 which doesnt have a student campus. Swansea which also has loads of students comes 8th in the list. Ceredigion with Aberystwyth and Lampeter campus comes last and Gwynedd which houses Bangor university has the lowest rate in North Wales.

But we didn't know it was spreading in Italy, Spain and France until March. It was almost certainly here too.

It was probably in the 10's of thousands, which wouldn't be the case in many countries and definitely not NZ.

We knew it was here in early feb, as we were told to use hand sanitiser and wash hands.

It was in Italy in November, maybe earlier, and many in this country believe they had it in December, myself included

25% of cases in Cardiff are in students who make up less than 10% of the population, a very similar ratio to Swansea.

Aberystwyth, Lampeter and Bangor offer courses through the medium of Welsh and courses useful to the Welsh economy, so attract more Welsh students who probably didn't come from an area of high infection. Aberystwyth and Bangor are less than half the size of Swansea and Cardiff uni's without considering UWIC and UWTSD campuses in both Swansea and Cardiff.

Lampeter is probably smaller than most 6th form colleges.

Nobody is saying students are the only problem but they are clearly a disproportionately big problem. Bigger than shops, leisure centres, restaurants, hairdressers, holidays and dare I say pubs? That was always going to be the case.

Drakeford did not recognise this in his statement - uni's carrying on as normal and will be the reason why this firebreak will likely have a marginal effect.

The earliest retrospective case in the UK was in a woman who definitely had it at the end of February. Cases were first tracked extensively in March in Europe.

Anyway, the ambiguity shows that shutting borders here wouldn't have worked.

It may well have been here for a while, but many people who think they had it didn't. Unless people can get it twice in quick succession. My guess is, based on peak timing of deaths is it was here mid January at the earliest.

At no time have I said that Universities do not have cases but the evidence clearly shows that these are the minority and the figures have been going up before students came here. I wonder what happened then. The students are part of the problem but other issues are causing it. The numbers tell you that. Blame a thousand or so students out of 15000 cases No wonder figures are going up in Wales when people cannot face reality.

Who is to blame for the 1195 cases between 12 August and 11 September before students came here. Is that students as well or perhaps blame Mark Drakeford. Is it Drakeford's fault for the record UK figures yesterday of over 26000 new cases. Blame Drakeford.

Auckland is a big city, no question.

The thing with NZ is that is it. Christchurch is next biggest followed by Wellington, they are the size of Cardiff and Swansea respectively.

The place is the size of the UK and 4 hours from anywhere. Its not a comparison at all.

They have done even better than Cuba, and that's quite an isolated place with not so many visitors

Many cases in Nottingham happened in areas with large student populations. 163 cases in Swansea, ho many people coming back from abroad had the virus?

Students used pubs off campus too, they could have spread it in those places.

Students are young people, mostly,

Look at the spread before students came back. Who is responsible for those. Couldnt they pass it on. Look bat the full case. The virus was in circulation and increasing rapidly before students came here and would have continued whether students returned. Undoubtedly students added to the problem but the problem was there and increasing before student came here
12 August 8 cases in Wales
19 august 21 cases in Wales
26 August 34 cases in Wales
1 September 51 cases in Wales
8 September 150 cases in Wales

This was pre students coming here. Look it is increasing weekly and has continued. Student coming here added to it but the rise was well and truly here before they came. Increased every week for 4 weeks and the rate of increase ws growing. Stop burying your head in the sand and look for the real cause. 163 students in Swansea Bay is very low compared with the actual cases since October. In the last 4 days alone there has been 580 cases in Swansea Bay.
