It still doesn't explain why NZ has done 120 times better than the UK

They have done even better than Cuba, and that's quite an isolated place with not so many visitors

What else do you expect? Do you trust the Cuban stats?

Look at the spread before students came back. Who is responsible for those. Couldnt they pass it on. Look bat the full case. The virus was in circulation and increasing rapidly before students came here and would have continued whether students returned. Undoubtedly students added to the problem but the problem was there and increasing before student came here
12 August 8 cases in Wales
19 august 21 cases in Wales
26 August 34 cases in Wales
1 September 51 cases in Wales
8 September 150 cases in Wales

This was pre students coming here. Look it is increasing weekly and has continued. Student coming here added to it but the rise was well and truly here before they came. Increased every week for 4 weeks and the rate of increase ws growing. Stop burying your head in the sand and look for the real cause. 163 students in Swansea Bay is very low compared with the actual cases since October. In the last 4 days alone there has been 580 cases in Swansea Bay.

A single student was linked to 32 other cases. Now if you do the possible maths, 32 X163.

I'm not saying it's all down to the students but it's not all down to returning tourists either.

The percentages of positive cases from tests stayed roughly the same but the increased number of tests obviously showed more cases.

You persist with the idea we nearly had the virus contained and on its way out. That was never the case. The virus was always still here, hiding in plain sight. The experts said we'd have a second wave and it'd possibly be worse than the first. Look at where we are. The numbers are higher now than at any other time. Strangely they are now saying all those advised to shield the first time around aren't being asked to do so this time, why is that? What is the scientific thinking? Is it that the elderly and most sick are expendable? Or is it that the virus is less deadly now and we are safer?

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Like you I am in the shielding group and I have been following advice to stay in my county over recent weeks. I go out as little as possible to protect myself and my wife who is also in the shielding group. I currently walk to the local shop and go to Tescos once a week.

However unlike you I feel fairly safe in my actions. I realise that it is unlikely to spread in these locations due to the short time I am there. PHW advisers have made it clear that you are many times more likely to get from people you know rather than those you dont and that might well be the reason for the change of advice. My one area of concern is travelling by bus. On occasions people are far to close together and that presents a risk.

As far as cases nearly being got rid off that is fact. There were days with 5 and 8 cases. There would have been unnkown cases but those would have been low as well. It needed to go down to nil and then after a few weeks we would have got rid of it.

However we didnt take the necessary action to achieve that. We let people go abroad and bring the virus back. That had the result of increasing the cases in circulation and people then spread it through households and pubs. That isnt just my view but what has been learned from test, trace and protect. You can hide away as much as you like but the virus started at that time and has continued since.

Students going to university was always going to present a problem. The way they live together in halls and HMOs was always likely to be a problem. They travel together and buses and this presents the same difficulties I have. When 6 or 7 of you share Kitchens , bathrooms and toilets this is always likely. To prevent this spreading the virus needed to be kept low but that sadly didnt happen. As the virus was in general circulation then students would catch and spread it as well.

The figures clearly show that students spreading it is a small part of the problem. In fact, much smaller than I expected. Much of the reasons are the same reason it spread before the students came particularly lack of social distancing. The evidence is very clear. There are 700 student cases in Cardiff and 200 in Swansea. Even when you add in the numbers for smaller universities it is nowhere near the number of cases in the rest of society.

The figures show there has been 113 cases in Skewen and Jersey Maine in the last 3 weeks. Many of these will be students on the Bay campus. However the figures show 41 cases for the same period for Cwmavon and Bryn, 43 for Port Talbot East and 62 in Aberafan. There are more cases in 3 areas around Port Talbot than there would be if every case in Skewen and Jersey Marine were from the Bay Campus. There were also 38 cases in Glynneath, 30 in Aberdulais and Resolven, 27 in the Dulais Valley and 29 in Pontardawe.

As can be seen the spread is everywhere and is going on in student and non student areas. Based on the other areas quite a few of the cases in Skewen and Jersey Marine are likely to be from local residents.

The percentage of positive cases isnt the same. It has increased hugely. At one stage Swansea and Neath Port Talbot had very low positivity rates. Over the last 7 days the percentages have been 16.3 and 15.9% compared to under 1% previously.

5 and 8 cases you say, that's known cases. We cannot know how many people were carrying it unawares but we do know very mny young people have had it with very minor symptoms.

Look at the current rates,

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-

How can you claim we nearly got rid of it, we didn't get to those numbers by nearly getting rid of it, there had to be significant numbers of asymptomatic or incubating cases.

I'd ask the Prof because he's as much of an expert on it as we're likley to get on here but you constantly dismiss his opnions which is ludicrous.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

5 and 8 is very few cases even you cannot deny it is far fewer than 391 or 1100 but then you ignore that on top of 391 and 1100 there will be far more asymptomatic cases. Generally they say it needs to be 2 weeks with no cases to be considered free of it. The graph really shows everything and how cases dropped and started increasing when pubs opened and people returned from holidays. The rate continued on its upward course as expected. If there are more people with the virus it spreads more and keeps increasing which is exactly what has happened starting with people returning with the virus from abroad.

NZ and Cuba have a tenth of our tourist visitors, probably a miniscule amount of business visitors and (especially in the case of Cuba) very little tourists leaving for a holiday and returning.

The UK has 9 million plane seats to Italy alone each year.

It's all relevant, we have a larger population. We didn't close our borders they did. They are back to normal we aren't

There are many countries like us that have done much better. It's all excuses. This govt has been negligent and incompetent. There's no getting away from this despite what spin some try to put on it.

Exactly. They closed borders we didnt. They are back to normal with very few deaths. We are back in a mess with loads of deaths. The evidence is absolutely clear. Some try to make excuses but 28 deaths for 5 million people compared to well over 40,000 deaths for 66 million should be enough for anyone. Instead we decide to go ahead with what has happened and will happen time and time again until the penny finally drops.

Jack11 says how I feel about all thi.
In these grim times with a lethal virus around us all,the first thought of some tw@ts is to go out, drink, get hammered, vomit over each other, have a laugh then maybe nut somebody. Then go home in a shared taxi.

Then when things go titsup, blame the govt ,politicans, anyone else apart from themselves.

Johnson has screwed up by treating people as if they have common sense and self discipline even a sense of what's right for the community. The absolute clown.

What about Singapore, a population of only 5.7 Million people packed in to an area of 724.2 square kilometres.
Their population density is 8,136.78 people per square kilometer compared to 278.67 people per square kilometer for the UK.
They are also a transit hub for international flights with a throughput of 68 million passengers/year compared to Heathrow's 81 Million/year.
Singapore tests/million = 594,458
UK tests/million = 453,097
Singapore Cases/million = 9,881 Deaths/Million = 5 (very similar to the rest of Malasia)
UK Cases/million = 11,919 Deaths/Million = 652

I wonder why they have so few deaths compared to Europe.

This is exactly the point I have been making. They got it right. We got it wrong and are still doing so and the cases will continue to come back. Had we followed Singapore's policy we would have a small fraction of our current cases.

Should be a good trade in pubs tonight before Drakeford's lockdown starts. Good of him to give everyone 5 days drinking time before they close. Not for nothing is he called dithering Drakeford.
When asked why he was not introducing tiers like Scotland and England his reply was Wales has 22 local authorities and it is not possible to have different rules in different parts of Wales, totally ignoring that Wales has had that for the last 8 weeks with lockdown in Merthyr, caerphilly slowly followed by Cardiff, Swansea , neath and port Talbot.

They handled the situation infinitely better than most other case's. The testing stats you post clearly demonstrate that, of course our testing capacity has only recently got to anywhere near that level.

At the start of the pandemic we were testing less than a tenth of our current capacity.

On the whole though the countries can't be compared for a whole host of reasons. In the main though the virus had established itself in our community before we realised down to the volume of tourism to and from the European hotspots.

Probably around 5 times the population of Singapore travel between here and Spain and Italy each year.

I think you can get caned for chewing gum or littering in Singapore? A very different society!

We've got people travelling the length of the country with covid symptoms. We're messing this up on our own island without worrying about elsewhere.
