Maybe we should have woken up to the fact this virus is not like anything other.

We have Piers Corbyn saying we are safe, mask wearing isnt necessary ,distancing too. People -some-support this theory.

We are where we are because of this refusal to accept our lives ,as we knew them ,are over.

This is the result of complacency and selfishness along with rank herd stupidity.

And Pubs are seen as "important". That itself shows what a mess we are in.

Well pubs are important to the economy and job scene.

They are important to some. They are NOT per se.Millions do not bother with them at all. Jobs are often part time, low paid or simply a second income. We lost manufacturing jobs wholescale and THEY were important a the main bread winner got shafted and a whole community killed off. Pubs closing, sorry ,do not do that.

Looking around Birkenhead yesterday I see countless pubs closed and vacant and in some cases replaced with affordable housing which is more important.

It is important we get away from our pub culture forged generations ago.

It's important also we don't allow this virus to fester just to keep some pubs open

Anyway,we disagree

Well, don't expect anything like that from any UK MPs, they seem incapable of sensible long term planning.
But they are very good at stupid money wasting long term planning and knee jerk reactions.

The evidence is many things opening didnt increase the number of cases. In fact, they still went down. Once people came back from abroad and pubs opened cases started increasing and have continued since. We need to learn lessons from places who have kept cases down. You cannot reopen things that cause the virus to increase otherwise you will just end up in this position on a regular basis. Once a virus is here it spreads and that is what has happened in the last 2 months.

Directly and indirectly the hospitality industry contributes 6 million jobs and £160 billion pounds to the UK economy. Apparently.

The NHS costs us about £130 billion.

We can't really do without pubs and restaurants.

If we go back to keeping them open dont complain when we are back in lockdown again. You wanted us to use the Pillar 2 system and are now complaining about the delays. You said we could open pubs and keep control. Every area of the UK has failed to do that and it has rocketed. Instead of blaming Drakeford maybe you need to realise the same thing is happening under Johnson, Sturgeon and Foster's watch as well.

I'm not complaining that we are back in some form of lock down, but we don't need to have go as far as we have.

We had to consider Pillar 2 tests too because everyone else was, not doing so was far more inaccurate than johnson changing the way death's were counted.

All leaders have failed, but I'm in Wales.

We have to try to find a balance as best as we can.

I agree we have to have a balance. However there are things that can be done and dont cause a spike and those that do. The biggest catalyst for the spike was opening our borders and people bringing the virus in thereby increasing the numbers in circulation and it spreading through mixing in pubs and houses. Without that opening pubs might have not had the same impact but you still have problems how to differentiate between pubs where families in the same household go out for a meal and others where people for different houses go as they always have and sit on the same table being from different households. How do you differentiate what is a food or non food pub.

Yes but nowhere the total reason. Over the last week Skewen and Jersey Marine has had 56 cases. This is the area covering the Bay Campus. This is only a fraction of the 267 cases in Neath Port Talbot in the same period. The other cases from the Bay Campus would largely be in Swansea with students living from Port Tennant, St Thomas, SA1, Marina, City Centre, Uplands, Sketty and Brynmill so approximately 1/5 of the cases in Neath Port Talbot related to the university and that is assuming all the cases in the Skewen and Jersey Marine area including Crymlin Burrows were all from students. Looking at close by areas Neath Abbey has 19 cases in a week so it is very likely that at least some of the 56 are non student residents. Other places tend to have around 10 cases Briton Ferry 13,
Cadoxton and Bryncoch 9, Baglan 9 and Pontardawe 9.

If you look more closely at the figures you will find that the areas for RCT are not in student areas. Pentre, Aberdare North and Llwydcoed are nowhere near universities. Neath Abbey and Aberafan combined are higher than Skewen and Jersey Marine and many of the figures for that area will include non students. Neath Port Talbot contains numerous area that will make the figures far higher. It goes from Trebanos to Blaengwynfi and Crymlin Burrows to Glynneath. A similar situation in Swansea. Most of the numbers in Swansea where Sketty probably includes more residents than students especially when you take into account Sketty Park.

it might be worth you looking at the actual figures. Go into the link below and onto Cases by MSOA and you can actually use the drop downs to see the cases in each area although it doesnt differentiate between students and non students. It gives total, last week and last 3 weeks figures.

There are a lot of students in rented accomodation in Sketty. You don't need a lot though, if they are spreading it you only need a few using local shops, pubs and giving it to neighbours if people aren't careful.
There are students in the town centre, Sketty, Brynmill, the Uplands, St Thomas and Port Tennant. Other areas too. They don't need to be a massive number, one infected person can pass it to many.
You persist with the view that we had some sort of control because the numbers were lower. We didn't have control, we didn't know how many infected/asymptomatic people we had. You constantly blame people returning from holiday yet many of them came back from areas with lower numbers than here.
The virus never went away, it waited for us to be stupid and we happily obliged. Whatever the reason or cause, we allowed this to happen by opening up too much and not enforcing what rules there were.
I still say this firebreak won't do much because people will still break the rules and not get punished for it.
We need a longer term, balanced plan. Severe punishments for rule breakers and a consistent message from all governments involved.
I also still say that devolution hasn't helped. We've seen the governments arguing, doing different things at different times and it caused more problems. We need one government in charge, one set of rules that we are all clear about, no confusion or bickering.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Sketty has some students and also HSV but nowhere near the numbers actually living there. If you take in Sketty Park, Derwen Fawr and some of the other areas students are massively outnumbered there so certainly although some of the cases will be students many wont.It is pretty similar and Port Tennant and St Thomas. Since the Bay Campus opened in 2015 many houses have been sold and used as HMOs but there are still many residents there. All the cases there wont be students. Brynmill and Uplands are largely the student areas and a large amount of the cases there will be students. As someone who worked in the city centre for over 35 years I am pretty knowledgeable about it. You would get too many students living in Dyfatty flats, Prince of Wales Road or any of the areas around there. A number of the new buildings on or around the Palace are actually for older people and this applies elsewhere. Some of the cases in the city will relate to students but no means all. Even if all the cases in all these areas were students it still is less than a quarter of the overall cases. It is having an impact but the rise was going on before students arrived and has continued since. There were very few students here in August and early September and the rise was going on then. It isnt all or mainly dowen to students although the position has been added to with their arrival.

Just to highlight the position here it is
12 August 8 New Cases
26 34 4 times
9 Sept 165 5 times

Freshers Week began 21 September
23 September 389 double
7 October 752 double
21 October 962 under 1 and a half

This started before students came here and has continued since they came here. Students whilst being part of the problem are not the total problem. It has just continued since we opened our borders and pubs.

There's a block of student accomodation flats over by Parc Tawe too.

Again, you don't need massive numbers of students to spread it, a small number roaming around will do.
Those 163 cases in Swansea Uni, how many had been down Wind Street not distancing, not wearing masks, not obeying rules?

How many others might they have infected?

How many Typhoid Mary's have been wandering around?

Derwen Fawr is mostly families and older people but when they go shopping they still have to rub shoulders with whoever is in the shop, even students.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

The reality is that many students will have brought the virus with them from where they live. They have come to live in Halls of Residency or Houses of Multiple Occupancy where they share facilities and it is going to spread there. They travel into Campuses on full buses where they are about 2 foot from the next person. It is going to spread in these places. HSV has 686 rooms at the moment. All are in houses with 7 rooms in each. The 7 students share the kitchen and there are 2 toilets which they share. That in itself is likely to spread the virus without socialising on Wind Street. They go to campus. Yet another chance to spread the virus. They wont spread it in shops. They arent there long enough. Far more likelyhood in halls, lecture theatres or on buses. It was always likely it would spread. To prevent that that happening the cases everywhere needed to be low. That didnt happen because we let the virus in from abroad to spread through pubs and through houses. Can you not see that the cases rose 4 fold between 12 and 26 August after months of decreasing.

It then went up 5 fold between 26 August and 9 September at a time when there no students. This was at the time people were coming back from summer holidays so kids could go back to school. This is the recording date. The actual date of testing is several days earlier.

Between 9 September and 23 September it had again gone up by over double. The testing date for this again would have been before students came. Again it rose by over double so from the 6 weeks from 12 August to 23 September the rate had gone up by nearly 50 times.

From 23 September to 7 October it doubled and from 7 October to 21 October it went by less than 1 and 1/2 times. In the period students have been back it has gone back 3 fold compared to 50 fold before they returned.

This isnt just about student's partying going to Wind Street or whatever. It was always going to spread in the environments in which they live but you really look at what has actually caused this instead of just blaming students.

Do you think it is only students that frequent places like Wind Street. There are no students in Bridgend so who was in that bar. There was photos of bars in St Mary's Street in Cardiff with massive queues before students came.

So basically we're having a spike because of students congregating but in a month or so that will in all likelihood have subsided.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

I doubt it will have subsided but over the last week or so the increase has certainly slowed and it isnt just about students. They are a small part of this. It is about others not socially distancing that is the bigger problem.

Why are folk so fixated with pubs, students ( not saying they are the major cause btw) will have plenty of opportunities to gather elsewhere, and then go out and spread this virus.
I'm not expert, however, it's my opinion that this latest circuit breaker will achieve nothing. We barely got the R rate bellow 1.0 with months of lockdown, so what's this latest round going to do.
I understand your sentiment.

No, it's about cases rising during a period when respiratory viruses generally spread like wildfire. This was entirely to be expected yet somehow has caught all the individual UK governments by surprise.

It's a spike that could have been largely avoided had those spreading it been allowed to contract Covid during the summer lockdown when hospitals and testing facilities mostly stood empty, but I guess sense took a back seat to kneejerk nonsense.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

The massive complex is the Bay campus and I wouldnt be surprised if many are there although the likelyhood is a number arent. If places like Bryncoch and Pontardawe are having cases then it is likely Skewen will as well. Even if they all are from the Bay Campus that is still only a fraction of Neath Port Talbot's cases.

Have you looked at the map? The legend may as well say the areas of dense student population are coloured blue.

I've lived in Swansea for 44 years, my wife was a student in Swansea. Students live in Brynmill, uplands and sketty. They are the blue areas. Since the new campus has been built there are new halls in Jersey Marine and guess what colour that is on the map?

When I was a student in Cardiff I lived in Gabalfa and Cathays. There were lots of us there, they are the darkest areas of blue in Cardiff?

Cardiff and Swansea are the biggest universities in the country.

It's not only students putting us in this situation but they are inevitably catching and spreading the virus. It is nothing to do with opening borders.

There are 3 blocks in the City Centre Student Roost by Parc Tawe, Oldway Centre by the station and Coppergate on the Kingsway but there are also places where people live or care homes. All the cases in the city centre wont be students and a fraction of the cases in places like Sketty and St Thomas will be as well but it certainly wont be all. If places like Clydach and Pontardawe have cases so will others as well. You only have to look at places where schools are partially closed to tell you it isnt only students.
