“Firebreak lockdown” a masterclass in incompetence. 23:33 - Oct 22 with 24914 viewsHighjack

Dr Drakeford and his cronies have really set the bar high on the incompetence stakes on this one.

They have announced tonight that retailers will only be allowed to sell “essential goods” during the 17 day lockdown but they are unable to say what counts as essential or non essential. At the time of writing this there is just over 18 hours to go until these rules come into force. The predictable result is that the entire population of Wales will rush out in the short time that is left and ravage the shelves of anything and everything that could potentially count as non essential. Meanwhile retailers are completely in the dark with just a few hours to go they are blissfully unaware of what they will or won’t be allowed to sell or whether they’ll be allowed to stay open at all.

Absolute idiocy from dippy Drakeford and this cabal of insidiously irrational imbeciles.

He's got an absolute cheek putting that up. He was one of the worst offenders for disregarding social distancing and eventually ended up being closed. That was too little too late.

He's part of the reason we're back in this situation. He should swap "M Drakeford" for "N Redfearn"

I doubt it very much if he is part of the reason of the situation we are going through now. The measures they have brought in are ineffective, and in IMO always will be.

Why did he get warned and then shut down then? And how can a short but more rigid lockdown be ineffective?

I'm not a fan of it at all, but it will be effective for a short while.

How effective it is we shall find out. Will they admit if the firebreak failed? Orwill they blather through it?

I think there'll be a gradual and small decrease, a plateau then an increase and another fire break. Probably starting the last 10 days or so of November.

I think it depends on the measures after November 9th, they may allow the effectiveness to be blathererd through even if those measures would have been sufficient in their own right anyway.

I think it would be the same regardless. How long have we had this local lock down in Swansea? Seems like an eternity? But a guess, a couple of weeks.. It's not working. masks and social distancing not working.. Or should i say, not so much not working, but doomed to failure from the start..

What they are doing is not on, there is a poor science behind it!, and if the numbers really are increasing what's the point in masks and social distancing, and these local lockdowns, not seeing your loved ones? You just know they are going to make it worse, and pull even worse restrictions.. :(

Working doesn't necessarily mean a massive drop in cases. What does seem to have happened is a slowing of the rate of increase and that is a good thing, that shows it is working. I'd say to the point that this fire break is over the top.

There's not poor science behind it. This business about deaths being lower or similar is almost irrelevant and this false positive test stuff is rubbish.

I have found out today that my mate tested positive, he's fine but his Mrs is rough as anything with a test to come tomorrow. They are early 40s and caught it from her brother who is a prison officer by the looks of it. They were supposed to be having his parents around today, both significant health issues and late 70's. Thank god they didn't, that's how this lockdown is working.

So, how come someone tested positive, then a few days later tested negative?

I don't know the circumstances and I'm not an expert but false negatives are up to 8 times more likely to occur than false positives according to the lancet.

Of course perhaps his/her immune system worked as designed?

The deniers and their websites don't even acknowledge the presence of false negatives and can't explain why all of these false positives have suddenly appeared. It is BS propaganda.

This is real, but we aren't going about controlling it correctly.

I think it's fairly obvious that there are serious issues around the accuracy of the test being used. Most people will have a story of someone with no symptoms testing positive, or someone with symptoms testing negative. Problem is policy is being driven by those test figures.

Massive decisions are being made based on faulty data. Decisions that can devastate people's lives and livelihoods. That shouldn't be happening this far in.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

The Prof did explain the false positives claim earlier in one of the many other threads.

Basically there is nothing to it.

I’m no fan of Drakeford but Tesco has now apologised for getting it wrong. The list of essential items included sanitary products.

One of the problems is that no one will know on November 9th whether it was a success or a failure. If figures eventually show it to have been a success they will have stopped it too early and we will get longer lockdowns in future. If figures eventually show it to have been a failure it will have put another nail in the economy for nothing.

Like others, I expect a Christmas relaxation of restrictions so that families can get together (otherwise there will be massive unrest) followed by another lockdown.

Not just faulty test data.
The statistics now bear no relationship to the statistics back in april/may/june, the mortality rate has gone way down from 1000 in 5000 cases to less than 250 in 25000 cases.
If the original social distancing, hand washing and all the efforts put in to make shops and work spaces safe actually worked why do we need full lockdown?
The total relaxation of those early controls, plus the let's all party and get pissed attitude is the problem.

20% mortality rate? I think you are a little mixed up .

I do agree that comparing last Mays infection rates to today’s is like comparing apples and Oranges.

The vast majority who test positive now are young with hardly any symptoms a lot of the same demographic in May would have had it but not known.

The problem is that retailers have had absolutely no clarity or guidance on what exactly constitutes essential or non essential so they had to make snap judgements and only had a few hours to do it.
Remember this non essential thing was only announced late night before lockdown. Many have been warned of increased trading standards visits which have the power to close the premises immediately so they have to ensure complete compliance so in many cases they’ve just hedged their bets a bit.

Obviously when it comes to sanitary products for ladies somebody should have used common sense and said yeah this is obviously essential but then you could make the argument for anything being essential really, which is why this has been a huge clusterfudge from the start.

Obviously the people correctly or incorrectly have decided to ignore this lockdown and the advice and precautions to take.
