From £15 billion to £10 billion

about bloomin time, some of the projects and countries we give money to is ridiculous.

We give money to India & China, who both have space programs.

We gave Rwanda £64 million, they then gave £30m to Arsenal to have "Visit Rwanda" on their shirt sleeves

Poll: Which kid would you give money to?

Because that's the way we roll?

Damned if I know.

Do we?

If we do, clearly it's wrong.

Some countries - India and China - are rich enough to look after their own poor - but clearly they don't.

I assume most of our aid goes to more deserving places.

It's not my area of expertise, any more than it is yours. I don't have a load of facts and figures to hand, the same as you don't.

But if 0.7% bothers you, fine.

It doesn't bother me.

All too often foreign aid doesn't get to the poorest, specially in Africa. Corruption is rife. Does foreign aid actually help is a valid question.

Corruption in countries receiving aid has been a problem for decades.

You'd have thought someone would have come up with a solution by now.

Scrap Trident replacement and save £205 billion.
Simples.

No other small nation spends such stupid money on their armed forces.
They spend it on pensions, health, education, and skills.

We are mugs.

Debt (public sector net debt excluding public sector banks, PSND ex) has exceeded £2 trillion for the first time; at the end of July 2020,

According to these figures, there are 65 countries who spend more of their GDP on their armed forces than us. Most of those countries are "smaller" than us in terms of population.

Foreign aid is probably far more complex than just handing the money for whatever purposes said country sees fit, no doubt the figure is made up of countless caveats, and ' 'nose tap' agreements.

Most of them seem to be arab states some poor some very rich with oil, Israel in amongst them but I suppose they need to defend them themselves.

Some very poor countries clearly spending too much on their armies , pity they don't spend it on feeding their citizens. Wonder how much of our foreign aid finds its way to fund their armies.

I'm sure our government has no problem with some of the aid being used to fund aspects of the military if it helps prevent radical Islamic extremists from gaining footholds in these countries.

Much of West Africa is currently easy pickings for Isis. Half a million left homeless in Mozambique already. How much will it cost to help rehome them all? Far more than it would cost to supply them with the necessary equipment to prevent these groups gaining footholds.

So about 135 countries who dont then ?

Thing is we are one of only a handful of nuclear states.
Nobody is threatening us, so chill the feck out.
And no UK PM will ever launch them due to mutual destruction.

Buy conventional weapons even, but not nuclear.
Denmark, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Holland, Denmark, Ireland, Greece, Italy, Poland, Belgium, Luxemburg, Norway, Finland etc etc none are nuclear, none are ever attacked.

More on pensions, schools, hospitals, and transport please.

Yes, I do a monthly contribution to Oxfam Water Aid - not a lot - the price of a few cups of coffee in Costa - that's my choice. It's hardly gonna break my bank.

Also, I've worked and paid taxes for 40+ years and I don't give a hoot if 0.7% of the tax I pay is spent on foreign aid.

It doesn't salve my social conscience, as you put it. It's just the decent thing to do as far as I'm concerned.

Maybe skinflints like you should have a 0.7% reduction in your tax if you're so offended by the idea of helping the poorest on the planet.

Unbelievable comments on here, probably from people ensconced on their sofas, fat-bellied, sipping wine, half asleep and idly flicking the channels over.

As for being at the back of the queue for hospital appointments. Been there, done that, but it never crossed my mind that it would be a good idea to scrap foreign aid just so the queue could be shorter. That's sick.

Jesus, you're even beginning to put me off jazz now 😤

So you don't quite grasp the fact that we don't actually have that money, we have to borrow it.

Our national debts of course are repaid by those in this country who then are denied medical treatments or whose treatments are delayed so long that their conditions become terminal because of lack of funds and medical staff and resources, or pensioners and others on the breadline too afraid to put their heating on because of the cost, often reflected in the massive upturn in deaths during the winter.

But you are quite happy to harp on about those you consider to be heartless who would prefer that we help the ordinary decent people in this country who are sacrificed so that you and others can feel better about yourselves by sending money needed to treat and care for our own to other countries

If you regard me as a skinflint because I wish to see our own people taken care of before sending money around the world that we as a nation have to borrow then so be it. I'm a little at a loss in regards your do I want to keep 0.7% remarks in regards any one individual, clearly a deflection by yourself for your own poor argument.

I note that you like others prefer to use 0.7% instead of the cold hard figure of the £15bn each and every year I've no doubt because the enormity of that figure strikes home to the public as to how much good and how many lives that could save in the UK each year.

Deal with the problems of people in our own country before borrowing to dole out gifts to others around the world.

As mentioned, give as much as you like to whatever you wish but stop volunteering other peoples money and future wellbeing to your pet causes.

( I do put a caveat on vaccination programmes and immediate disaster relief aid which must continue in my view)

Very simplistic view on the world imo
Just a few questions if you don't mind
Who decides who will govern the country , are we to be a republic ?
What if the UN permanent members (UK included) reject the claim to independence or fail to recognise a new country. ?
Which currency shall we adopt , the EU ? but then we have to be in the EU which the majority of this country rejected
Who's going to create our financial infrastructure, our own banking system
How will we defend ourselves. ( all countries have some form of protection )
How would we control our borders, the UK is coming out of the EU so we'd be isolated

Interesting concept but how practical is it ?

"In a free society, the State is the servant of the people—not the master."

Which of those countries gives out free prescriptions and healthcare free at the point of delivery?

Did ay of those countries start off 300 billion in debt, our share of the current debt.

These succesful small countries, what they have to do is cooperate with their neighbours, if we went indy and rejoined the EU we'd be telling England to get lost. Wouldn't be great for trade. On that, I can find plenty of figures for Welsh trade with everyone besides England. Who do we export most to, who is Wales biggest trading partner?

See, nothing about England, or Scotland, why is that?

The welsh people did not vote to join any union with England.
Any debt is Englands debt, wales had no say.

However we should , of course, discuss reparations for 800 years of occupation.

The welsh border would be an EU border as per the north of Ireland statelet.
They will have sorted by January 21 so dont lose any sleep fella.

The Irish government gives 0.32% of its GDP. Why is this so low ?

That is only 45% of what the generous UK gives and even after the cut next year will still only be 60% of the UK total.

The massive interest which of course has to be paid each year, the mounting £billions of the interest payments which then cannot then be spent on providing, health, education and housing for those citizens in this country who are ironically paying the interest off each year.

I'm struggling to see your point, higher borrowings mean larger annual interest payments which have to be deducted from from state spending on other essential items.

So when the UK borrows money to hand out around the world not only do we as a country owe increasing sums that other countries enjoy the benefits of, here in the UK services are cut lives are lost because of the increase in borrowing affecting the ability to provide for the very people funding the overseas largesse.

Cutting foreign aid is just another political smokescreen.

If they’d have rephrased the statement to say something like “We are scrapping Foreign Aid and replacing it with a much better foreign investment fund, seeking to cement Britain’s interests in a post Brexit world“ I’d bet we wouldn’t have had a thread on it.

It wouldn’t have made such a statement would it? Instead they’ve doubled down as not only has funding been cut as it’s worked as a % of GDP, but they’ve shaved the additional 0.2% off.

I’m not saying the system was/is perfect and yes, there’s obvious abuse. But we should be far more concerned that this is causing a distraction to the billions and billions down the drain on track and trace and dodgy PPE contracts.

It’s a typical ‘dead cat’ strategy.

Not true 34 countries currently run a fiscal surplus.
Norway has a gross debt of 33% of its gdp but a net debt of -93% of GDP.

It owns more assets and lends money to other countries far in excess of what it owes.
