The coal authority are refusing to cover residents for damage inside the properties.

Watching the news tonight I'm amazed but how many didn't have insurance.

And with the forecast again this weekend, surely insurance is a must

You give it out, you take it back it`s all part of the game

I'm sure I remember the Coal board used funds raised for Aberfan to clear the mess up.

But can they get insurance?

Swansea Indepenent Poster Of The Year 2021. Dr P / Mart66 / Roathie / Parlay / E20/ Duffle was 2nd, but he is deluded and thinks in his little twisted brain that he won. Poor sod. We let him win this year, as he has cried for a whole year. His 14 usernames, bless his cotton socks.

Can't see why not, it was a freak incident, no history of flooding there before, as far as I have read

The legal ramifications will go on for yrs over this, house insurance is normally a stipulation of any mortgage agreement with any bank I've always thought, unless things have changed or course, regards anything that's not nailed down at least a permanent fixture as it were.
That said its poor form from the Coal Authority, it surely has an obligation to insure that any water outlet that could be over run is maintained to stop it happening.
Sad thing is, with climate change we are gonna see far more of this happening.

Very true TJ, an absolute disgusting disgrace.

Let's not forget what George Thomas did or didn't do.

Didn't I read that this flood was caused by a mine wall collapsing thereby blocking a drainage system?

Where does that put the Coal Board, legally speaking? Do they become liable? Without the mine and the collapse thre would not have been the flooding.

This won't be going away any time soon.

The point about insurance, I thought so too, when we moved here 17 months ago one of the terms was we had to have insurance in place.
Many people take that insurance out but then let it lapse to "save money" and when the schitt hits the fan they are in deep, deep trouble.
Our house insurance only costs 12 quid per month, surely a price worth paying?

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

so they did, the money was taken out of the fund to clear the remaining coal tips.

they also hired an assessor to calculate the amount of compensation to give a family based on their grieving

Err the caring sharing Labour Government you mean Shuurly.

Money sent from all over the world from caring ordinary people to help those families affected by their tragic losses pillaged by the Labour Party administration to pay for the removal of tips.

And they've got the cheek to call the tories scum?

Hang your heads in shame.

Can't get link to work here's the opening paragraph:-

If the criminal negligence that led to the Aberfan disaster betrayed the whole community, the aftermath compounded the betrayal.

Not only did the bereaved have to cope with the knowledge that no-one received the slightest punishment for the 144 deaths, but an appeal fund for the villagers was plundered so what remained of the lethal tip could be removed.

I understand that a considerable time later the NCB was forced to return the money, which was then used for community projects. Perhaps the 1990's?

Heres the report from the Daily Mirror in 2006, an abject lesson in adding insult to such a disgusting act by two Labour Party governments.

SURVIVORS of the Aberfan disaster yesterday called on the Government to pay back money officially "stolen" from the appeal fund.

It was 40 years ago tomorrow that 116 children and 28 adults died when a coal tip slid down a hill and buried a primary school in South Wales.

More than £1.5m was raised for stricken families but the then Labour Government took £150,000 to clear up the tip, sparking fury in the Valleys.

When Tony Blair came to power the money was repaid. But families insist the fund should have got at least £1million to allow for inflation. There are fears remaining cash, which maintains the cemetery and memorial garden, will soon run out.

Survivor Gaynor Madgwick, 48, who lost her brother Carl, seven, and sister Marylyn, 10, said: "The Government should hand back money we believe is due to us." Another villager added: "To give it back at 30-year-old rates was despicable."

Ex-Welsh secretary Ron Davies claimed yesterday that fund officials only wanted the £150,000.

Doesn't mater one iota, how much the funders hoped raise or what they wanted, 1.5mil was raised and they should have it all, Labour had no right whatsoever to claim/demand 150k of it, absolutely disgusting, unfortunately its the first I've heard of it.
Ron Davies is a piece of work and always has been, absolute vermin.

Indeed.A labour government oversaw the NCB ,the nationalised coal board whose chairman refused to acknowledge blame for the disaster and one who was seemingly not that arsed either.

Funds were used to clear the tips and Labour oversaw it all.

Taking the money to clean up was utterly disgraceful and was something that should have been addressed many years ago. To be fair to Tony Blair he put it right, but they should have paid back the money plus inflation etc.
£150k is a lot of money, but to a government it’s not even chicken feed and they waste much more than that every month.

They’re all as bad as each other. Devious, ruthless. You expect it from the tories. But it’s even more infuriating when labour act like this because they are always marketed as the good guys when they demonstrably aren’t.

The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

Yet so many strong Labour supporters can't see it, or refuse to see it. When you point out Blair to them they say he wasn't really Labour and yes, he was the bluest Labour PM we'll see but he won on the Labour vote.

Politicians are pretty much all the same, if they weren't, if most of them were decent people who wanted to do the right thing there'd have been no trouble changing things that most of us would say needed changing. You'll never get a turkey to vote for Christmas though and they are mostly turkeys. That's a whole other discussion too.

I guess there'll be an appeal to raise money for the flooded, us "members of the public" will be asked to dig deep to help and no doubt we will.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

I’ve said this millions of times on here. Hardly anybody really likes labour or their policies. But people vote for them to stop the Tories getting in. As for the Tories hardly anybody likes them or their policies, but people vote for them to stop labour getting in.

Hardly anybody actually votes FOR anything. It’s always to stop something else happening. This is why the de facto two party state that we have is so crap. They can both act like a bunch of bastards to their hearts content and they know they’ll still get millions of votes anyway.

No .I expect it from Labour.I expect insouciance from Conservatives. The hate speech comes from the left, whereas the arrogance of many tories see themselves as socially superior and dialogue with labour zealots not desirable. Thet don't give a monkeys.

I see Labour full of plastic socialists who would not urinate on a "working class" person if on fire but they are used for political gain;hence their usage of "ordinary" to describe people.

Ordinary the greatest term of offence out there and one that I would ban, along "working classes"-a term to cringe over

Very humorous and also very predictable. However it would be nice if you gave an opinion on such a serious topic rather than just down voting. By down voting, you obviously think it was ok for the government at the time to do what they did, so would like to see a constructive argument as to why you think that. Feel free to down vote again as it takes all types.
