Here are some that I found to be notable:

Mother, Father, Him, Her, Husband, Wife, Brother, Sister plus many more.

"The guide begins with a fatwa against age, saying that it should not be brought up unless strictly relevant, and even then only objective terms can be used. In the eyes of Manchester University, someone is no longer ‘suffering from cancer’ but are a person ‘living with cancer’. Similarly, the university no longer says that someone is a ‘victim of dementia’ — presumably because dementia is something to be appreciated in the eyes of the inclusivity team."

Every organisation has a list of words it prefers to use.
It’s a house style book issue.

Some of it is stupid, some of it is just trying to be inclusive.

Lots of current post grad doctoral students on here though it seems. With all that in-depth knowledge of the academic world both in the U.K. and US.

I agree that some stuff is ridiculous. But they aren’t ‘Banning’ words if you look at what they say rather than the hysterical nonsense. They are just saying use ‘partner’ for example, rather than husband or wife. Or ‘sibling’ instead of brother or sister.

It’s only to avoid unintentionally upsetting someone. If I’m talking to someone I don’t know I would always tend to use ‘partner‘ anyway. As I don’t assume straight / gay / married / living with someone. It’s the same thing. It’s not banned. Just being courteous.

Surely we can appreciate the difference between banning mainly descriptive words (Telegraph), and banning entire categories and pronouns (Manchester Uni). Stripping people of their gender, and forcing a change in basic perception is far more extreme than using a euphemism for the noun 'bloodbath'.

This is certainly part of a continuum, but it seems the Telegraph are more concerned with professionalism and avoiding inflammatory language. Adjectives and nouns can easily be substituted. The uni seems more concerned with warping our idea of people themselves.
That is sinister.

Would you get insulted if someone said husband and it turned out you were a Lesbian and had a significant other? Or would you just correct them?

What kind of world is it becoming when we are worried so much about unintentional insults? Aren't there more important concerns, like violence towards women, racism. An unintentional act should be easily rectified after all.

If I inintentionally insult someone I apologise and we move on, it's quite easy really.

	Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Would they admit so in public? Nope because of the torrent of indignation which of course is often false itself.

The world is more racist now and this is down to the hysterical campaign to demonise .It creates division.

We need to accept people are different and need to be treated as such.

I agree, but often this kind of scenario creates a problem where there doesn't need to be one.

I have a Wife. I don't get offended if somebody calls her my partner, I wouldn't even correct them.

As soon as language start becoming policed, it doesn’t end there. Soon that isn’t good enough and it gets more and more Orwellian.

Like Bill C16 in Canada where you can be jailed for misgendering someone as it is now listed as hate speech under the Human Rights code. I don’t believe anyone has been jailed yet but heavy fines have been imposed.

Remember these are notions that have not been publicly agreed upon. I don’t believe in the notion of a xir, or a hir, or a two spirit person - or any of the infinite genders. Yet I can be fined heavily and even imprisoned for not changing my him/her language.

Its a very slippery slope and we haven’t even started our journey down yet.

Somebody made reference to my wife when she was walking the dog a good few years ago about me, referring to me as her partner she said he's not my partner he is my husband, less offence would have been caused by saying husband to her as that is/was the norm, to say partner implies she was living in sin (to a person of a certain age).
Perhaps husband/wife would be more appropriate in rural Wales and partner in a town/city ?

This is a few years old, but ...

COMMON SENSE, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons such as.

- Life isn't always fair;
- And maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student, but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant.

Common Sense lost the will to live when criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realise that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death,

-by his parents - Truth and Trust.
-by his wife - Discretion.
-by his daughter - Responsibility.
-and by his son - Reason.

He is survived by his 5 stepbrothers,

Not many attended his funeral because so few realised he was gone.
