| “We need to rotate” 19:32 - Mar 20 with 13058 views | Dr_Parnassus | Can we stop with that nonsense now please, and realise the fact that we have an incredibly front loaded and lop sided squad. Bidwell looked like a player that had been rotated, no sharpness and no fluidity and about 3 yards off the pace. Whittaker for all his effort has nowhere near the physical attributes to be playing at this level yet, he showed what he could be at times and is going to be a very good player I have no doubt, but he was knocked off the ball every time he was challenged and we gave up possession far too easily. Naughton is not a centre back and what benefits he may give us when we have the ball sadly we lose without it, we were dominated in the air in both boxes. We need to play our best team and accept we will be tired at times, that’s the nature of football when you don’t have a big squad full of quality. Which is something we don’t have despite many pretending otherwise. I am full of praise for the management team and their achievements thus far but one area where I feel disappointed in is I don’t think they have blocked out the noise efficiently enough. To me, it looks like they have allowed desperate opinion to be picked up by journalists and has allowed that to permeate their decision making. This latest game seems to be the epitome of that. It was a disjointed game with what looked like a cobbled together team. Cabango, Lowe and Smith have to start. | |

| “We need to rotate” on 09:54 - Mar 22 by jack247 | If you think Cabango can do everything Naughton does, plus win headers, you’re right, we’re never going to agree. Not a knock at Ben, I’d have no problem with him coming in for Bennett. |
I certainly don’t think we would have much of an impact on our style of play by playing Cabango instead of Naughton, put it that way. But what we could do is provide a real goal threat from set pieces and also win headed balls in our own box. I wouldn’t sacrifice that for what is a minimal gain on the floor at the back. Cabango is more than capable to play football.

| “We need to rotate” on 10:59 - Mar 22 by Catullus | Point utterly an completely, or just ognored. Your opinion is just that and you are entitled to one. The point was that you seem to believe what you are saying is always common sense and therefore right. One aerial battle does not signify a lot of aerial battles, we kept the ball on th floor toavoid them, commn sense, one might think. Because we knew we wouldn't win aerial battles we used a different tactic and we nealy scored from it. Cabango would hve improved our chances but he would have been facing Flint and Morrison, respectively 9cm and 6 cm taller than him and far more experienced, no guarantee of winning a high ball really. Did they back off to defend their lead or because we were playing better? You can't do much without the ball, besides defend and I think they backed off because we kept the ball and pushed them back, just my opinion, I'm not going to claim it's common sense. Backing off was a tactic we used when we were playing well but then other teams found a way around that, we kept trying and as our performances worsened our defence looked more leaky. Common sense might say it's time to change strategy. Keeping on doing the same thing hoping for a different outcome but putting in dire performances, losing more games and not even looking like getting a shot in most of the time, hardly common sense. On another thread you said you'd be cheering Cardiff because you seem to think we are certainties over 2 legs. So tell me, do you really believe that we played better because Cardiff let us or because we are capable? I think it's because we are capable. With that I'm withdrawing because I've been here before with you and so have others, you'll keep going and going like it's a war of attrition and in the end you'll think you've won because I gave up. I believe what I have just posted. It's my opinion whether anyone else agrees or thinks it common sense or not, I believe it. We played better and forced them back. |
I didn’t ignore it, I just didn’t agree with it. Whenever you make a point does that mean I have to agree with it simply because it is a point you have made, or I have ignored it? Doesn’t that work both ways then (it shouldn’t work either way btw). What do you mean one areal battle? There was 36, one every 2.5 mins. We lost the vast majority, one of which was the only goal of the game. Others were in and around our box where we ended up losing possession. We can play the same way intentionally avoiding playing the ball in the air with Cabango on the field too, meaning the times when we can get a corner into the box or a ball is played into ours then we have a better chance to winning it. Yes Cardiff absolutely backed off. They stopped pressing and sat, they put bodies centrally and condensed us. Yes we played better, it’s easy to play better when teams are sat back and not pressing you in your own half. It’s the exact tactic we often use, it’s intentional it’s not the fact we were pushing them back - they sat back. Hence the blocks and the fact we found it hard to get a shot on target, they can be charged down, covered and blocked with so many behind the ball. Where did I say we were certainties over 2 legs against Cardiff? You tend to change what I say to suit whatever points you are making at the time. Say what I said, not what you preferred me to say. I said over 2 legs, if we don’t beat them then we don’t deserve to go up. Cardiff are a poor side. We gave away a needless goal that I think was absolutely preventable with the right personnel. As I said, if Cooper had his chance again I think he starts Cabango for sure, he starts Smith and he may even have started Lowe. It’s complete common sense backed by all stats and match facts. You disagree, that’s fine. Why you keep coming back saying the same things I don’t know.

Of course he can play football. I wouldn’t pick him as a full back or a midfielder though. Naughton and Guehis roles are a combination centre back and those. In terms of minimal gain, we had 75% of the ball and most of the territory. Yes, they scored from a long throw, but they hardly got any crosses into our box. We quite rightly didn’t put many into theirs and I very much doubt that would have changed with one physically imposing centre back on the pitch.

I wouldn’t pick Naughton as a midfielder either. He’s a right back. It’s a stretch to say their roles are midfield players, their job is to provide support to Bidwell and Roberts. We had 75% of the ball yes, that was always going to be the case once they went 1-0 up. I believe it would have been the case whether Naughton played or Cabango. Naughton had the most areal duels out of all our defenders, he was targeted. I understand your point that they weren’t peppering our box with crosses; it’s one we have both acknowledged. But what was in the air, they dominated. Once of which was the only goal of the game. We had 11 corners which usually Cabango causes huge problems for opposition, yet we were unable to capitalise on those opportunities without him on the field. With Cabango on the pitch we absolutely would have put crosses into the box from corners, without a shadow of a doubt. But we are making the same points now. We disagree.

Cabango is very mediocre with the ball at his feet. His touch, close control and passing are hugely suspect and he puts the sh!ts up me every time the ball comes near him. To ask him to do what Naughton could, you may as well play Freddie there. Naughton can get himself out of tricky situations, he reads the game quite well and his passing is pretty sharp. Reading your posts makes me feel a bit sad. One, you clearly demonstrate you don't appreciate the finer points of the game and lack attention to detail, but worse, gone are the days now where the Swans were lauded as a football team, you are actually advocating us go full Cardiff City and play big lumps who can't play football. You bang on about arial challenges but that game we had 75% possession. It was us that dominated the game and one of the reasons for doing that was having more ballers on the pitch. Going like for like doesn't beat the likes of Carfiff. You don't try to beat them at their own game - that's what they want you fool. And.... laughably, you talk of our 38% arial successes and I'm guessing you're trying to tell anyone that will listen is that was poor because of one player?! But I'm sure most sensible people would look at the last game at theirs and think we did alright. And that game, they won 43 of their 57 = 75% of all challenges involving outfield players. We had 18 from 53 = 33% Heisht your noise.

All our defenders have pass completion rates in the 70%+ range, they can all play. The difference in physical differences between Naughton and Cabango is greater than the footballing abilities of both. Don’t be sad by other peoples opinions, it’s a football forum. There are far more important things in life to be sad about. You disagree with me, we know, we get it. You have failed to convince me to change my opinion though.

Huh? 1) You have 108% there? 2) What point is that making? It shows that Naughton won zero of his areal battles. If Cabango had started the other Cardiff game then that would have been an interesting comparison. This says nothing though.

Corrected. Same for us, slightly worse for( them *edited). I had double counted with a Swans players stats in the graphic below - https://www.whoscored.com/Matc Yeh, it showed Naughton won ZERO battles last time we played them yet he was singled out for praise and what he brought to the team. You have no hiding places with this one Adam. Unless you're trying to say Cooper got it wrong in both games? [Post edited 22 Mar 2021 13:06]

I’m not with you, I don’t understand the point you are making. I am not saying Naughton is a bad player, I’m saying Cabango is a better choice. I absolutely believe he got it wrong. But he knows more about the game than any of us, I would happily listen to his reasons and not abuse him for it.

Oh well don’t be sad about that either, the same applies. It’s a football forum. I’d hate to think you were sad. Of course I believe it. We are a better team when Cabango starts than we are when Naughton does. It’s hardly a shocking or controversial opinion. Cabango has contributed to a goal (assist or scored) 1 in every 5 starts (5 in 25). Naughton hasn’t scored or assisted in any of his games (0 in 26) although he did win a penalty, which should be an assist in my opinion. When Naughton starts we average 1.83 points per game. When Cabango starts we average 2.03 points per game. Both have started a similar amount. Edit - to put that difference into perspective, over the course of a 46 game season that’s a 9 point difference. That’s very significant. You disagree with both me and the stats, that’s fine. You don’t have to agree. But as I said, nothing that has been presented here has convinced me otherwise. [Post edited 22 Mar 2021 13:34]

Do you think Cooper would have seen the exact same (or very similar) arial stats for Naughton in the last game and ignored them? No... But you have gone to town on it and embarrassed yourself repeating ad nauseam. Cabangno fpr Naughton wasn't the reason we didn't get the result. We are a football team that has forgotten how to attack, how to construct and build up moves. We're a team that likes to spoil games and nick goals and Cooper has strangled the life out of our football team. To the point now that when we need to get back in the game we look rudderless and clueless. A bit like you with this Naughton/Cabango capitulation.

Well yes, clearly. He ignored them as he thinks what Naughton brings to the footballing side is a greater addition than what he lacks over Cabango in the physical side. I disagree. The stats show we get more points per game when Cabango starts than when Naughton does, he has better defensive and attacking stats. I’m far from embarrassed to have an opinion that is clearly backed by that. I understand we are a team that likes to play football. But that doesn’t mean we can’t also be a threat in the air. Some of the best footballing sides also carry a threat in the air, in fact almost all do. What it comes down to is you think Naughton is the key to us playing wonderful football, I disagree. We will both probably have to get over it I guess.

Go to bed Adam, you've been on here 16 hours now and you are coming across as delirious. But before you do, have a look at Hourihane's assists and goals - he must be at the top of the tree in the stat you will make up next. But is there a single Swans fan still left that doesn't think he's messed us up? And that is the good old fashioned test of the eyes. Canango - big lump, loves to defend, physical - can't pass, poor control, forget playing out from the back. Naugton - experienced, seasoned pro. Reads the game well, comfortable with the ball at his feet, crisp passer, can get out of tight situations, more pace. - Poor in the air. Oh, and their goal was not his fault. Like in the previous game we tried to put players in front of their big men. Matty won the ball in the box. Yay, an arial success for us... but inexplicably both he and especially Ayew just ball watched and Ayew just left his man wander around to the front of the 6 yard box.

Don’t give up on it so soon, we almost had a productive chat then. It’s a shame, as soon as you think you have lost ground you either call me Adam or remark about posting time. It would be better if you just accepted a point than make such dull and boring remarks wouldn’t it? It’s clearly not having the desired effect. Stat I make up? Which stats do you think I have made up? Cabango has better defensive stats than Naughton and greater direct contributions to goals, plus higher points per start. They are some pretty wide ranging and damning areas to look at. Which of course you also know, but will never admit. Currently I could say we have a Swan as a badge and you would disagree, the discussion is futile. Nobody is claiming the goal was Naughtons fault, not sure where you are getting that from. The point is a physical defence tends to deal with areal balls into the box better. The question is, is there more chance they score that goal with Cabango defending in the box or Naughton. The answer is easy. Again, you think we are a better side when Naughton starts, I don’t.

| “We need to rotate” on 14:03 - Mar 22 with 688 views | A_Fans_Dad | The long throw for their goal was in the air a long time and all our defenders bar 1 and their attackers moved away from the goal. Leaving plenty of space and time for a decent Penalty Area Bossing keeper to punch it away. The one thing we did not do at all well was attack with speed, after breaking up their attacks we gave them ample time to all get back to defend by passing sideways instead of forward. Fast sweeping attacks like Lowe and Ayew were making earlier in the season have virtually disappeared. The difference between the first and second games was not in the Ariel battles, we lost both of them, the difference was we scored first and they couldn't park the bus. and pack their penalty area. | | | |

I believe so, yes. Although you think he got it right yes? Just this game what? I don’t believe in luck long term. It tends to balance out. You seem to be thinking I’m saying we can’t win with Naughton in the team, which is weird. My point is we have a better chance of winning when Cabango plays. We are more than capable of winning when Naughton does. Down on Naughton? The only negative I have said about Naughton (poor in the air) has also been echoed by yourself. My point is Cabango is better not that Naughton is bad. But again I sense you know that already and are doing that weird thing you like to do when you get all obsessed and upset with someone on the internet. Hourihane has 1.53 points per game btw, just totted it up. Poor.

Nothing will change without super Steve being snapped up for his brilliant coaching and CV and the club being old to people who give a ratsarse. We'll be as we are.

| “We need to rotate” on 14:03 - Mar 22 by A_Fans_Dad | The long throw for their goal was in the air a long time and all our defenders bar 1 and their attackers moved away from the goal. |
Good post. We couldn’t really attack with speed, because they scored a scrappy early goal and put lots of players behind the ball, even on the odd occasion they attacked, it wasn’t in numbers and they were well set defensively. Contrast that to the first game, where we scored a scrappy early goal and they were forced to be more adventurous. If we get them in the playoffs, I’d think we’d set up the same way, with Smith in for Hourihane.

I’d be very surprised. If we remain this inefficient in front of goal and have a side where we are too concerned to even put a corner in the box, I’m thinking Cooper will choose a different side. I’d be disappointed in him if he wouldn’t have learned from this game. The gain was not deserving of the sacrifice. Maybe he has realised this, maybe he stands by it. The next game may tell us. As you say, when a team like Cardiff get the opening goal it can be an incredible pain to get back into the game (on the scoresheet at least). With Cabango on the pitch I would be more confident in shutting them out, allowing us chance to get that first goal ourselves. As we have shown with Cabango starting, we are more than capable of playing good football and winning games, more so in fact. [Post edited 22 Mar 2021 15:04]

No problem with that, but then we leave Bennett out. He’s a good leader and is positionally sound, but isn’t as good in the air as Cabango. If we play Cardiff, or teams like them, we play them at our game, not try to go toe to toe at theirs.

As I said, I don’t think we suddenly turn into a hoofball team just because Cabango plays. We can keep exactly the same style of play but just be more of a threat when the ball is in the air or we get a set piece. According to this whoscored website that seems to be getting used in this thread, Cabango is our second highest rated player of the season (7.13). Naughton sitting on 6.70. Naughton plays 42.8 passes per game, Cabango plays 41.5 passes per game. However, Cabango plays 0.2 key passes per game where as Naughton plays 0.1 key passes. Kyle does have a higher pass completion rate though (77% vs 72%). The difference really is minimal and the style does not seem to alter. But what we give up in both boxes is massive.
