Booing of the British national anthem yesterday. 15:06 - May 30 with 8445 viewsOptimisticJack

Normally I am so proud of our fans but felt totally embarrassed by our fans booing the British anthem yesterday.
I do feel that the announcer prior should have announced that the Welsh anthem would follow and may have prevented some booing.
We are playing in the English league. All too often we suspect that the powers to be dont want us Welsh teams in the top flight.
Things like this add fuel to the fire.
It may just be the actions that influence the minds of referees and lean decisions against us.
The referee yesterday certainly didn't give us a thing and from early on I could see a red card and penalties coming against us.
We are not doing ourselves any favours.

Nothing beats the Marseillaise for melody . Blood curdling revolutionary crap of course .

America s is simply ludicrous as an anthem to sing as it gets very high up the scale .

For a dirge, the endless verses of the Dutch anthem take some beating.

All about Orange and Power too

Well the Lions team that toured South Africa was packed with welsh players - and the black people supported that Lions team.

Footage of try celebrations in the grounds is very clear to see.

Of course they should not have gone, but naive is probably the most likely cause.
Gareth Edwards has said as much.
I am pretty sure there was no ‘welsh support for the apartheid regime’.

Gareth Edwards knew what he was doing. JPR was a qualified doctor. The others were not poorly educated.

They were arguing to keep politicis out of "all white skined sport". Players like Carl Smith were left behind. No doubt he did not want to make a fuss.

The tours were paid for by the South African Government. Blacks were not allowed in the stadium around 1970 and were segreaged in 1974. The Black fans declared their jhate for the Boks not thier love for the Lions.

The WRU and the player have never apologised including JJ and Merve. Too late for them they will be friends of the aparthied regime forever in some eyes.

The "Jones " choir went out there annonymously fpaid for by the SA Government and against UK Government advice. Organised through WRU contacts. No Blacks invovled.

Its about brushing the past under the carpet. If Gareth Edwards turns up at the Liberty Cabango and Routledge are well within thier rights to ask for an explanation.

"I was naiive will not wash". I think he went in 1971 as well but information is sparse.

Personal interest.

He needs to explain his reasoning for agreeing to take part in a sporting contest where black people were not allowed to take part. He needs to explain why he had so little regard for his black teammate who was not allowed to play.

He may say he was young say this is "all above his head" but it does nort wash. He is a smart man and things were explained to him by the like of John Taylor.

He could argue he went for the money but that would have been against the laws of amateur sport.

Imagine Swansea city were invited to North Korea for £2m and the club needed the money. News then came through that Cabango, Korey Smith, Routledge and Naughton would not get visas and would no be allowed to play on the basis of their skin colour. Imagine in Matt Grimes and Fulton and the rest said "We are going anyway". These days they would not get such an easy ride. They would in fact be lampooned in the press.

Gareth needs to explain the diference.

No he does not and just exactly who are you to say he does.

This was a tour drenched in hypocrisy and we are and always will be so,including you.

You need to speak to the Black/Coloured/Indians of that time as to what they thought and how the township people welcomed them.

Those Lions were no more racist than you

I am the ResolvenSwan thats who. I if speak to GOE I will give him my point of view.

He as a free man agreed to go on an all white skinned tour playing all white skinned teams. He left his black teamate behind. He had plenty of advice not to go from the likes of Peter Hain but ignored them. I do not need to ask 'non whites' what they thought of it. I already know.

He hopes everyone has forgotten and forgiven. He is mistaken. Swansea city if they really believe in zero tolerance on race issues should not welcome him to the Liberty Stadium in my view.

Welsh people get very defensive about thier 1970-1980 heros. The ones who were on the payroles of the south African Aparthied regime.

When they went to play "white skinned only" sport thats what they said then. It's politicis. This however is different as the sport itself was racist. Get you head around it Opimistic Jack. If Routledge was in the squad he would have been sent home.If he got to the ground and in his kit the Boks would have refused to play.

Gareth Edwards has been seen within the hospitality sections of the Liberty periodically in recent years.
As you would have been there yourself did you make your feelings known to his face?

Let's get one thing clear - you would struggle on this forum to find a person more against racism than me.
There is no place in sport for racism and I continually advocate showing respect as has been mentioned previously in this thread.

Schecter wasn’t allowed in Dubai for a Swans training camp. The rest of the squad still went.

How many "non-whites" are aware of what happened with the opinion Gareth and why do you need to introduce his middle initial?
The Neath and Swansea valley and indeed Swansea itself had a very small ethnic population in the 1970's but you know the opinion of their feelings towards him and his stance?

Politics is and always has been an integral part of sport.
The east German athletes,Romanian gymnasts,Hungarian weight liffteres and Russian everything were ALL paid and sponsored by the State to glorify socialism and the State system. All of them were given privileges the ordinary bugger had no chance of having .

When they served their use ,they were dumped. When they rebelled or tried to escape they were hounded for life.

The family of a classmate moved to South Africa because the dad followed the Lions and was impressed by apartheid. He was by no means unique.
Some years later the daughter was kicked out after bearing a black baby. She never saw the baby or boyfriend again (brother suggested he might not have lived beyond his prison sentence). After years of depression she committed suicide.

Not forgetting of course thousands of Welsh /Irish girls cast into the wilderness because of illigitimate or unmixed race babies.
In fact ,mixed relationships included religion .
