It's not having him back its dissing him which pissed me off as that side was brilliant

Yes it was. Chico was one of, if not the, weakest links in it.

Perhaps it’s rose tinted glasses, perhaps it’s how far we have fallen since, but he was routinely out of position and switched off during games.

He was a brilliant character and superb on the ball. He wasn’t a great defender. Those lunging tackles we all used to love were often because he had lost his man in the first place.

Look at the career he had after the Swans and compare it to the rest of that team. He was mid twenties and should have been approaching his peak when he left us.

The only time I have worn a Swans t-shirt with a players name on the back in my adult life.

The name was Chico. ( must have been an offer in the club shop, but still , I thought he was great )

Wore it to Valencia away, one of life's great memories - the trip in the top 20, I will take to my grave.

Chico was brilliant.

Anyone who says he wasn't I write off as someone who obviously couldn't play themselves. The type who think hoofing it off the park is the mark of a good defender.

A good defender is a good footballer, who can defend great.
A good defender is able to bring the ball forward, commit his man, and then deliver the pass which starts an attack.

The mess we are in now can be traced back to that time when the emptiest vessels started to make a lot of noise criticising a good team that contained good footballers.

They obviously were longing for the likes of Alfie Mawson, Sam Clucas and Kyle Bartley to come and show us how it's done.
Morons.

Yeah that’s fantastic. You’re describing Ashley Williams, not Chico.

He was brilliant bringing the ball out from the back, he was good aerially. He was just a liability when players ran at him. Particularly when he was out of position, which was often. Great for morale, absolutely. Big character for the fans, 100%

If we was the player you think he was, he’d have gone on to bigger and better things than Swansea City. Pablo was the only other from that era I can think that took a similar career path and that was a huge waste of talent.

Your last two paragraphs are drivel.

BoIIocks.

Chico had a lot of ground to cover when Ben Davies went walkabout, which he did all the time, and Chico covered him all the time, and once or twice he got caught out. Chico was an excellent entertainer but at the heart of it was a first class footballer.

Ok, genuine question. Why do you think he spent what should have been the prime of his career in Qatar rather than he PL or La Liga, while Ben Davies was playing for Tottenham?

The truth as per usual is somewhere in the middle.

He was fantastic on the ball and a key component of our counter-attacking style under Laudrup whose ability to quickly switch play out of the back (allied to JdG) we never really replaced.

He wasn't a disciplined defender in the same way that Fernandez or Williams were, but he was nowhere near a "liability". The way some people carry on you'd swear he played in clown shoes.

Chico was certainly not a liability, not even close. One of our better players back in the day with the attitude and passion to match.

That said, bringing him out of retirement to play with us at 34 would be ridiculous.

‘Not a disciplined defender’ would probably be a fairer way of putting it. I’m not pretending he was useless, he was great at bringing the ball out, very calm in possession, could sell strikers dummies and rarely get caught out. I can see why Brynmill would see him as a good fit.

My opinion on his defensive prowess won’t change though. He’d go forward and amble back. He’d switch off and not track a run. He was much, much better with the ball than when opponents had it.

I was there when Taylor broke his leg and Davies replaced him. Ben was not without talent but he was a raw kid, and at the time he certainly had a tendency to follow the ball out of wide leaving Chico with acres to cover and as a result he sometimes got caught out on the inside, but he had to do it. Chico aided Ben’s development immeasurably, in the same way Monk did with Ash and Caulker. Comparing the trajectory of two players at different stages of their careers is like comparing apples and oranges.

Great post. Sorry meant to up arrow but down arrowed by mistake. Sausage fingers. I expect the same people who are criticizing him are the same who were holier than though over his play acting which 99% of the PL was doing anyway. A consummate footballer totally unappreciated by those who just look for sticks to beat people with. Monk didn’t like him so sheep follow suit.

That’s fair comment. Not denying he had to Cover for Davies at times. At the same time, I doubt you’d argue Ash didn’t often have to cover for him.

I used to love it when he strolled out of defence, powered headers away and sold strikers cryuff turns. I used to love the theatrics too.

I genuinely think that if you took Chico out of a back four with Rangel, Williams and Davies then put him into a back three with any combination of Manning, Cooper, Latabaudiere and Cabango, you’d see the difference.

Very troubled lad is Ibe unfortunately, still young enough and was a star in the making, not sure what's happened to him though wrong company/demons who knows, he is a very talented boy, football wise at least, massive shame.

Marc Navarro looks a good shout. Still young and can play Right back or Centre half with a bit of experience.

Kean Bryan is another obvious choice, young still and can play centre half or in midfield.

Sergi Enrich a Spanish striker with a decent record albeit 31 could offer a bit of experience.

Ghayas Zahid 27yr old attacking midfielder who is a Norwegian international who likes to run at defenders and knows where the goal is.

Aleksandar Prijović 31yr old Serb who has scored goals quite regularly for his last 4 clubs and offers a bit more at 6ft 3.

I can't see us delving into the Free Agent market, the players probably haven't played for a while, probable fitness issues as well, will take time to get them up to speed.

I just don't see it happening

Would agree with you on signing of free agents.
I don't think the fitness issue would prevent them signing a player as Ntcham would fall under that category.

I think if they saw a free agent as a player who would add something to the team, good age and probably a resale value then they would look into it.

Chico play acted a just a few times and only after referees had ignored the treatment he was receiving from the likes of Andy Carroll.
Compared with almost every team we played that season the Swans were angels.
