With all that said he explained the positives very clearly post match, but admitted the intensity over the ninety minutes was not there. 0 The future is next season, click above. That was my immediate first reaction. He should have said team maybe, and no he doesn't do himself any favours.

It annoyed me too, f course we are a proper club and it's blindingly obvious you try and retain players who have done well for you. It's just another meaningless, ill advised soundbite. Team managers come out with them all the time.

I suppose it's down to how an individual would take it and I can certainly see why people would take it on a certain way.

Well judging from the replies, only you have taken it in a different way to everyone else.

All day. With Martin it's always about Martinball brand, at all costs. MKDons fans can write a book about it. Some Swans fans have the script written (me included) with publicists queuing up in their scores. Oh for the days of proper, sleeves-up, street-wise down with the proper fans managers, who play to win effectively and efficiently above all else. Yet some fans are still lost way up in the clouds. Brainwashed by the not-so-subtle Martinball PR machine. Martinball, still languished way down in the bottom half. Still. After 3 years of management. Completely unacceptable in so many ways. No way would he get past the 1st interview at any self respecting Championship club right now, including us. Yet we had and still have Wunter (another story, another book). Martinball. Fraud, without .ppt. Cooperball had the.ppt from the outset, had the the know how /stripes of winning football, the results, and ultimately the relatively massive achievements. How some fans are excusing Martin for such crass, disrespectful comments is beyond comprehension, right now.

| Russell Martin : ‘If we are going to be a proper club’ on 18:31 - Apr 16 with 1944 views | Chief | Seems like a veiled dig at who's running the club to me. The fact he cites the Paterson saga suggests he's on the players side of the dispute and deserves a rise. Maybe a few wins has given him the confidence to challenge the owners ahead of the summer transfer window. | |

How does he clearly mean that? Because you have decided interpreted it that way and add words for him that he didn’t say? A team is always going to sell its players, we have always done so and not even the likes of Man Utd are immune from that. That would be a stupid thing to say too, completely unrealistic and not a place we will ever be in as a club, nor should we be aiming for such a thing. The comments are bang on from what I can see, it’s not the first time he’s arrogantly said things like that. He needs PR training, lots talk about him being a good speaker but I disagree entirely. I cringe when he speaks, its like an intern, just seems to lack any knowledge or any substance. Other opinions are available of course. However what is unacceptable is certain individuals stating how wrong people are to have an opinion on it unless they add words to his comments in order to take the same view as them. What’s happened to all views welcome?

Well a quick head count suggests 9 think it was a silly thing to say, where as 3 others are agreeing with you. Some of those 9 are staunch Martin fans so I think your accusation is unfair.

Hopefully Pato will be one of the next in line to make sure he commits here as well.” I have absolutely no problem whatsoever with this. Think of yourselves as employees, would you rather work for an employer with the reputation of looking after their staff or one that takes every opportunity line the pockets of their owners/investors? He could have chosen a better set of words to mean the same thing but at the end of the day apples is apples.

The use of the word "proper" is I think Cockney vernacular. It may have been used in "Only fools and horses" for example. David Jansen might have said to the barmaid. "You are a proper diamond Mavis". It means good and model behaviour to be aspired to. Martin was raised in Brighton with London influences and picked up this vernacular in his every day speech. Fans who cite this as disrespectful are either hyper sensitive or have an agenda in my opinion. True to form those with a well established agenda are well to the fore in this thread.

I agree. This was one sentence taken in isolation perhaps out of a 2-3 minute answer. I didn’t read it as suggesting we’re not a proper club in the way people are suggesting

Funny you should mention hyper sensitive. He's not very media savvy, makes quite a few ill advised comments.
