| Plaid Cymru - Assaulting your wife is fine? 12:26 - Aug 12 with 4609 views | Joesus_Of_Narbereth | The wife of Carmarthen East MP Jonathan Edwards who was assaulted by him is shocked and appalled at Plaid Cymru’s decision to return the whip to him and welcome him back to the party. Mr Edwards previously accepted a caution for the assault on his wife, issued a public apology and attended an educational course about domestic violence. Once again a person in public office has committed a fairly serious and deeply unpleasant offence and yet is allowed to still ‘serve’ as an MP. And by restoring the whip is Plaid Cymru complicit in condoning these sorts of offences? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk- | |

Refer to the past by all means but constantly making references to events which took place generations ago is not healthy

Very progressive. | |

Maybe they should bring in a law in which anyone who is or wants to be an MP must have a clean record (Although theyd probsbly need a general election to fill all the vacant seats).

Allow me. The old Welsh mam working culture was that she stayed home virtually chained to the kitchen only being allowed out of scrub the front step. They were slaves. All "working class" women were whilst their husbands got ratarsed after work before coming home to a meal on the table and God help her if it wasnt .Same if he found dirt or dust in the bathroomless house. Don't ever try to outsmart me Killy.

Two things, firstly, the laws of Hywel Dda weren't codofoed until after his death and so, while his name is attached to them, they cannot be so easily attached to him as he wasnt alive to make sure they were what he wanted. Hywel is mentioned in the prologues of these laws but he was dead. Second, Kilkenny used to criticise people on here, accusing them of living in the 70's and saying they should catch up with the modern world yet he continues to hark back over 1000 years, Hywel Dda died in 949 or 950 CE. maybe you should get up to date Kilky. On the OP, there is no way this person should be allowed back into Plaid. If this was the tories Im sure Adam Price would be highly critical and rightly so. [Post edited 12 Aug 2022 16:39]

| Plaid Cymru - Assaulting your wife is fine? on 18:58 - Aug 12 with 2565 views | majorraglan | I’ve had dealings with Edwards and his staff and they were very good tbf. I appreciate he’s apologised, attended a course and been cautioned, but the fact it he has a criminal sanction against his name and I think his position as an MP is untenable. There’s not a lot that can be done between now and the next GE at which point I think he’ll be voted out. I think this is a poor decision by Plaid Cymru. Be interesting to see how many MP’s have criminal convictions. | | | |
| Plaid Cymru - Assaulting your wife is fine? on 19:08 - Aug 12 with 2558 views | Sirjohnalot | Shameful decision. This man has admitted assaulting his wife, it doesn’t matter that it was considered relatively’minor’ so that he received a caution. He’s committed a criminal offence against his wife. If you were a victim of domestic violence and wanted to seek advice from your MP about hostels etc,how could you go to him ? | | | |

Here you go, Hywel Dda's Laws of the Court These laws set down the rights of the king and rulers of Wales, their order of precedence, ranks, titles, and obligations. It introduces the concepts of insults and fines, according to whom an offence was given. The law used payment as a form of punishment, rather than death, dismemberment, etc., which the Normans instituted in England in 1066. In that respect, Welsh law was similar to Anglo-Saxon law and it is the system of Saxon and Welsh lawyers, infighting, and suing one another that provided the precedence for the modern English/American system, rather than the feudal Norman one. Laws of the Country This category was further divided into laws of women, land law, and surety and contracts. Women had more rights and were of higher status than in many European groups (e.g. Norman). For example, a woman was entitled to compensation if her husband beat her for anything other than: “giving away something which she was not entitled to give away, for being found with another man, or for wishing a blemish on her husband’s beard.” (the final article indicates cultural differences between then and now) She also had the right to divorce him under certain circumstances, including if he was unfaithful to her. http://www.maryjones.us/ctexts Hywel Dda laws Marriage was considered an agreement, not a holy sacrament. Divorce was permitted by common consent. There was no punishment for theft — if the sole purpose was to stay alive. Illegitimate children received the same rights as legitimate sons and daughters. You were allowed to pick up three things if you found them in the road — a horseshoe, a nail and a penny. So a husband WAS allowed to beat his wife in the right circumstances. Sounds like the 1970's to me

Yes he is serious. It sounds like a gap in your knowledge. Welsh history has already been rewritten by the English historians and not in our favour. I see the Welsh castle as a glorious tribute to our fighting men and women against Norman rule. Have you ever figured out that England and the Saxon Anglo populace was under Norman rule very quickly after 1066. It took another 400 years to quell Welsh resistance to the English Norman monarchy. Consider that when you drive over the Prince of Wales bridge to the match at Reading. We have our own parliament and Welsh people can kick out the thug at the next election. We earned it through blood sweat and 400 years of tears. Some pro Saxon elements want it abolished. [Post edited 12 Aug 2022 19:37]

I’m not entirely sure how we’ve gone so quickly from talking about a third rate modern politician whacking his wife to the internal daily machinations of the deheubarthian legal system during the iron century. If I had more time tonight I would love to extemporise on the subject. But all I will say for now is that tweet suggesting a great leap forwards for womens rights during a time which was undoubtedly one of the most brutal times to be a woman in all of our islands history is just abject hyperbolic political nonsense with little grounding in any sort of fact.

| Plaid Cymru - Assaulting your wife is fine? on 20:34 - Aug 12 with 2475 views | Gwyn737 | It seems that politicians no longer need to held to a higher standard. We’re so divided it doesn’t seem to matter - whatever a persons persons party affiliation, they’ll bat for their politician. Someone like Starmer comes along with seemingly few skeletons in the closed and what looks like a pretty good moral compass and we (and I include me in ‘we’), call him boring and uninspiring. | | | |

Take Starmer out of the equation for the moment but when has it become a necessary for our PM to be interesting ? Who cares if someone is boring as long as they get the job done and can be trusted ? They’re not Big Brother contestants. (Know you’re not saying that )

it's because kilky always takes posts off topic and I enjoy shooting him down,or used to because mostly. he's on ignore. it's only when I'm not logged in I see his posts. Anyway, this Plaid fella, it's a bad decision and it should bite Plaid squarely on the arris.
