| Proportion of Welsh speakers falls on 09:26 - Dec 7 by Catullus | I asked my son to ask his friends how many spoke Welsh at home, you can guess the answer. I know it's not reprsentative and it's a tiny number, in this case he asked 7 of them at football training. He says he doesn't want to learn it and makes no effort in class, his Welsh teacher has mentioned it but I could only tell her it was his choice and he'd prefer to learn Spanish but can't yet tho. He makes his choices soon and Spanish will be one if it's there but he still can't ditch Welsh so what else will he have to give up? |
No offence but i suspect your own views/opinions may influence your son. Using your son to prove you are correct in your world view …. Well ….would not carry a lot of weight in a court of law.

Bottom of the list, how can you write something without being able to read it? Plus what does "Does not apply" mean? Instead of picking up twitter gossip that can be manipulated, read the report by the Welsh government. https://gov.wales/welsh-langua [Post edited 7 Dec 2022 6:30]

But then again …. there are more Welsh speakers today than there were people in all of Wales ~250 years ago. Also the population of Cymru apparently grew by 100,000 during this period. How many would be welsh speaking ? It would alter the perventage of course. Dont get me wrong, i would like to see much more done to increase peoples access to the welsh language in Wales.

| Proportion of Welsh speakers falls on 14:43 - Dec 7 with 745 views | lifelong | What I find amusing about these threads is that in Wales there are 2 main languages English and Welsh with English being the most spoken, and some people are up in arms calling the Welsh language irrelevant with too much money spent on it. Yet, in London only 36% of the population were born there with 48% born overseas. Over 300 languages are spoken there with many thousands unable to speak English, dozens of schools are non English speaking, go into some public service premises there and you will see announcements and information written in many languages. This is referred to as multi cultural and cosmopolitan, perhaps the anti Welsh brigade on here should go up there and demonstrate against this? | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Not really, its fairly common for the parents world views to influence the kids. Same with you and I. The difference is that i have not referenced my kids as the example to try and prove my view is correct. That would be a bit strange to me as it proves nothing much at all.

Despite all the waffle posted the results of the census are pretty conclusive. 2011 census 19% of people living in Wales claimed they were fluent in the Welsh Language 2022 census 17.8% of people living in Wales claimed they were fluent in the Welsh Language. English is the National language of Wales followed by Wesh in in distant second. Just plain unarguable facts.

| Proportion of Welsh speakers falls on 22:31 - Dec 6 by lifelong | The cost of the language amounts to 0.23% of the Welsh budget, many people in Wales, including non Welsh speakers, believe that is a small price to pay to promote the language. Many services and facilities are paid for by all tax payers in Wales but only used by a minority, does that mean that tax payers should be able to pick and chose where their taxes are distributed? |
This is pretty much where I am on the subject. It’s easy to measure taxes in doctors, nurses and police officers but that’s not all life is about. Culture and the arts need funding and by their very nature not everyone will agree on what’s worthy and what’s not. I get that people are annoyed by the Senedd. I get people are unionists. Knock yourselves out? But wanting the language to die? Seems a bit much.

Passports are not a devolved matter so even if Passports were needed to travel within the UK Drakeford has nothing to do with it. Now covoid is over Drakeford has lost his power to stop people travelling.

How much money does the government spend forcing people to learn any of these lnguages though? The kids speak these languages at home as well as learning English in school. Our Polish friends, they all spoe their native tngue at home so the kids learned it that way but in school they used English...and then of course these Polish kids also had to learn Welsh. Kilkenny, 1000 years ago there were roughly only 150k people resident in Wales and almost all of them spoke Welsh, your point is what exactly? There being many times more people in Wales now should be a guarantee that Welsh speaking increased, the population has risen in the last 10 years but the number speaking Welsh has dropped despite the Senedd's actions.

Well, I'm astonished by the number of actual Welsh people that want to see their nations language die out, I can't speak it as I never had the opportunity to when I was young a cop out by me perhaps, but I never ever want to see the language die. And I couldn't give a monkeys chuff whoever disagrees either. [Post edited 7 Dec 2022 22:53]

Again, nobody (well, maybe Perchy) wants to see Welsh die out. And here's the thing; it's not going to. Not for centuries to come at the very least. Welsh speaking families will still raise Welsh speaking kids until long after we and our grandkids' grandkids will be cold in the ground. There's just no need to subsidise the process.

As a fellow Welshman I have no issues with Wales. The national language spoken throughout Wales is English. Just as it is in New Zealand, Australia, USA, Canada, Scotland, NI, ROI. Each of those countries have a percentage of the population who can speak other languages.

I'm not sure I am completely against the promotion of the Welsh language full stop. Its just that we are spending a lot of money and clearly it is not working. The underlying issues must be assessed and a new thought line brought in. Are we trying to push people into speaking Welsh when they do not want to. I mean parents as well as the welsh government. I look at my own grandchildren who go to Welsh language schools. They can speak, read and write in welsh. They speak welsh in the classroom, speak welsh in the playground ect when on break, but if their school friends came straight round to play in the garden after school they revert to english. Their parents can communicate in welsh but it is far from their first language. The issues are far more complex than many think.
