I have personal experience of Morriston A+E and it has well and truly become a 'pass-the-buck' outsource centre for G.P's. It's not on many occasions a case of many people not required to be there because they are time-wasters or hypochondriacs, but far more a case of they could have been seen at their G.P surgery instead.

It's farcical at times like the patient who was sent to A+E by the G.P surgery, to then wait 18 hours there, to have a confirmed diagnosis and being told to go back to the G.P surgery that had sent the patient to A+E in the first place.

Black surreal comedy stuff!

Try phoning 111, I bet they'll tell you to go to A&E and there they might tell you you are wasting their time becaue apparently 111 routinely tell people to go to A&E no matter what.

PS, I absolutely hate the idea that Ambulance staff are striking BUT I 100% support their actions. If something isnt done the entire NHS will collapse and our beloved PM is saying they can't have pay rises but he'll change the law to limit their actions. Not the actions of a democracy but quite typical of the rich and powerful, they take everything, tell the majority they can't afford to give us anything much then sit in their subsdised bars moaning about us being greedy.

People should be Triaged at the door. If they're not there for an accident or an emergency (clue is in the name) they should be turned away before even getting inside.

Mind you, GP's need a rocket up the arse as well. They've been on go-slow for about fifteen years, worse since Covid kicked in.

The seeds for the current GP crisis (The Press, September 29) were sown in 2004 when Tony Blair totally gave in to the doctors' unions and agreed new contracts that gave them a 60 per cent salary increase - giving the vast majority a salary above £100,000.

It’s really made me angry. We pay tax from cradle to grave, they squeeze us until the pips squeak. We don’t usually mind paying tax because it pays for vital services, health, the police, local infrastructure.

But when you actually need one of these services it’s sorry there’s nobody available. It is actually criminal. Millions of people paying god knows how much in one of the richest countries in the world and getting nothing but a shit sandwich but there’s no bread because of cuts.

Hope your dad is now getting the care he deserves and is able to make a swift recovery.

You are right to be angry. The system is a mess and it’s not just here in Wales, it’s all over the UK and it’s got worse over the last few years. You are right about taxes, we’re paying good money and not getting what we should. Bed blocking is a huge issue, the breakdown in social care means that a significant proportion of patients in hospital are fit to be discharged but can’t go anywhere without a supportive care package. Ambulances are backed up because they can’t offload their patients and it’s even got to the stage where we have squaddies backfilling gaps in the paramedics. It’s been steadily getting worse and there is worse to come, inflation and energy rises are eating away at the NHS budget and this will mean less money for patient care.

Are you blaming the staff that are constantly swamped for being unable to provide a timely service?
I have had need of A&E services and the staff have been absolutely fantastic, do not blame them, it's the corrupt MPs and MSs that are doing this.

The police service is seeing massive amounts of people leaving.
They are broken too.
A judicial system that is a circus.
Pension schemes amended several times
No support whatsoever from Govt .
And they were offered how much a raise ?
They should come out too.
Fire Police Ambulance. Perfect trinity .

Trouble is Z

Policing is seeing a huge lift in the number of cops being recruited, but it’s not all it seems there’s an element of smoke and mirrors about it. The number of cops is being increased so that it returns to the levels of around 12 years ago - the pre austerity period. While the number of cops is going up, budgets are being cut and savings need to be made. There will be a huge reduction in police staff, probably far more than the number of extra cops being recruited. Given that a lot of the work police staff undertakes supports front policing or satisfy statutory requirements, it’s going to mean a lot of the new cops end up doing back office jobs away from the operational environment and not what they were recruited for.

There’s been a lot of talk about the government removing the right of Border Force staff, nurses etc, railway staff etc to strike like they have with the police. As someone who works in the public services I would have no issue with that IF the government set up independent pay negotiating panels who would review and determine pay rises which were binding on all parties, however in the case of the police previous Governments have ignored the recommendations of pay review boards and imposed lower rises which is in my opinion bang out of order.

Truss’s lunatic budget cost the £30bn, that could easily have paid for decent rises for nurses, cops, soldiers and fire brigade. We’re being governed by spivs.

My dad had a heart attack on Saturday night. My frantic mum phoned 999 only to be told there was a ten hour wait for an ambulance. Me and my brother had to bomb over there bundle him into the car and take him ourselves. So I doubt if they go on strike anyone will notice.

Only just seen this mate, I hope your dad is ok, it must have been awful knowing that there wasn't an ambulance speeding to treat your dad in his time of need, fingers crossed for good recovery.

I know I'll take some stick for saying this, but there are far to many people taking out of the NHS pot that haven't put a single penny into the pot, that is unsustainable.

You got to walk the great wall of China before you can get an appointment at our surgery, you got receptionists questioning you about what aliment you may have before speaking to a triage nurse, well they phone you back.

Its a joke, although if its anything to do with my lad they are good in fairness, but his brother mother and me can wait

This is a free and democratic country apparently yet we're constantly told what to do and watched on everything we do, well government spends and spends on things that are useless and cost billions, they have investigations in things they do accused of that cost millions upon millions and if they find anything which is rare it mostly gets brushed under the carpet, the waste that has and does go on is disgusting.

We got homeless people, people using food banks and we got government spending and spending that doesn't make any difference to anything.

I hate this government with a passion, we've had a clown at the helm and now we're on our second unelected PM, before anyone spouts anything like the vote was for the tory party not for a PM, I'm fully aware of THAT!

Then we got Labour, whose "leader" couldn't find his arse with both hands.

Country is in a hell of a mess!!

Had the same issue with my mum last week, after waiting six hours for an ambulance just a medic turned up in a car! He then told me it would be another 12 to 16 hrs for an actual ambulance. He helped me get her from her flat to my car and we eventually got there. From what I gather the issue is social care? Lots if beds full of old people who cannot be released due to waiting for care package.
Once they speed this up it should release 1000’s of bed spaces allegedly. My mums one of them, cannot manage independently anymore, there is places in a home nr where I live, she wants to go, just a waiting game whilst ambulances sit there with desperate people unable to physically move into a bed….madness.

Huge, huge chunks of current NHS problems have their roots in the actions of the last Labour Government. Not all, but a lot of them.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

My mum was stuck in hospital for weeks longer than she needed to be a few years ago. She now has ciders 4 times a day. They’re absolutely wonderful people, get paid peanuts but what they do is invaluable. They only get paid when they’re at someone’s house, not for travelling in between.

Can’t praise them enough.

In England the conservatives. In wales labour. In Scotland the SNP. In Northern Ireland nobody for most of the time. Same effect everywhere. A complete failure of a system and people suffering and dying needlessly when they’ve paid in their whole lives.

In my opinion the whole thing needs complete reform.

It’s been a systemic failure over the last forty years to not train enough doctors, nurses, paramedics. Not build enough hospitals to cope with the population. Like everything else in life it’s been easier and cheaper just to import them in from the far east/India etc.

Granted, but, the previous poster mentioned Blairs govt for the problems. Can't have it both ways, it's either the fault of regional or national govt As the NHS is in difficulty nationwide, i know where I apportion the blame.

The blame has to be apportioned to the administration responsible for each area. Which is all of them. If the welsh NHS were having better results than the English nhs you can guarantee the Senedd would be shouting it from the rooftops. As you said you can’t have it both ways. It seems that whenever there’s some positive news the devolved govts take full credit, when something bad happens blame Westminster.

It’s about time the devolved govts took full responsibility for the areas they have full responsibility for.

We went to visit the other day and there was this poor old bloke sat on a trolley he said to a nurse he’d been on it for two days and hadn’t been seen. Next thing you know two burly policemen walked in chained to a little rat like criminal prisoner man and escorted him into his own room for immediate attention.

& it does need a complete reform, there are a lot of hard working staff in the NHS there is also a lot of workshy people who need to be removed.

There is no point in continuing to throw money at it.

The staff do want more pay, so that would require money. There's also a staff shortage, hence the new for agency staff and overtime

If the health service worked properly it couldn't be used for political gain.
There will always be some who do not contribute, but what i will say is that all of the frontline staff i have dealt with, nurses, doctors, consultants, receptionists etc have all been doing their best in incredibly challenging circumstances.
There needs to be serious pressure put on the UK and Welsh governments to improve public services.
