| Whittaker gone on 14:40 - Jul 17 by Whiterockin | Twice he was loaned out for game time, twice he came back and failed to impress. A new manager comes in and he is sold on. Rooney didn't rate him that's why he came to us. So how was he handled badly. Sometimes you have to look at the player. |
We loaned him out and he did excellently. We brought him back and treated him like sh*t. How the hell was he ever going to demonstrate what he was capable of when Martin had absolutely no intention or interest in using him properly?

agreed It was clear he could do a job whilst at Plymouth. If the purpose was to develop him, then they did just that . When we recalled him, he was ignored and simply consigned to the bench. A few minutes at the end of a game is not development.

| Whittaker gone on 14:57 - Jul 17 with 1753 views | jack247 | There’s very little doubt Martin could have handled him better. He looked like he had something to offer if he put the work in. Just like Cooper and whoever was in Charge of Derby, he wasn’t the most culpable for Whittakers lack of effort though. | | | |

We will just have to wait and see how he performs in the championship. Three managers could be wrong or they could be right.

We will. I'm not apportioning any blame towards Duff on this. I would imagine a serious approach from a club and manager that clearly "get" Whittaker would have made staying at Swansea far from his preferred option, even if Duff saw a place for him. Burned once, etc. It's just a shame that we haven't tried to get the best out of a talented player in his entire time here. Tried not even a little bit.

| Whittaker gone on 12:17 - Jul 17 by Fireboy2 | Good riddance. Obviously duff will get pelters for not seeing how good he is and how he never gave him a chance. |
No, I gave Martin pelters for that and Whitaker no longer wanted to be here and he clearly wanted to be at Home park. I can't blame Duff for that. We got a million for him, I hope Duff is getting a good amount of any incoming fees for investing in our future. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

| Whittaker gone on 13:45 - Jul 17 by sw02sea | So we paid £700,000 for him + his wages for 2 years, and we’ve received £1m’ish back with possible ad ons. Sack the juggler I say. |
If he was on 10k per week then we've made around 200k profit before any add ons come in. That's not too bad for a player who (for whatever reason) failed here.

Well we weren't paying his wages when he was out on loan

Plus anything Lincoln and Plymouth paid for his loan/wages.

That's what I don't get Doc, there are a few players who got the schitty end of the stick, never got a fair crack, in my opinion. Cullen was given a LOT of chances before he started scoring but Whttaker and Joseph got scraps. Ogbene got very few chances but Latibeaudiere played almost every week, out of position. Some choices seemd unfair at best and downright crazy at worst but still some people rate Martin. I guess we can jump him more dispassionately now and lets see hw Southampton do with his "process" but I guarantee if they are not in the promotion mix at Christmas his job will be on the line, He won't get two full seasons there unless he takes them straight up and keeps them up. if I was going to bet on it I'd stake a tenner he's gone before the new year.
| Whittaker gone on 15:58 - Jul 17 with 1575 views | Fireboy2 | You can tell the Martin haters will never believe that he thought that whittaker wasnt right for swansea even though Rooney, Cooper and now Duff all thought the same. I will never forget whittakers reaction at him not getting the ball enough at Hull, I felt totally vindicated at that time as I saw it with my own bins, I suspect he's the same in training and duff has seen enough to say that he's not going to fit in his hard working selfless style of game he wants to play. As I've said before, good riddance, we want players who play for the team and not fir themselves. | | | |

The one that always struck me as perhaps the single best example of how not to motivate a young player was to leave him on the bench for the entire match against Preston following his hat trick against Plymouth (ironically) the game before. Cullen played the full 90 minutes.

Players don’t just get chances when we are watching. They train every day and in the cases of the three you mentioned, got opportunities to impress on loan. Championship clubs don’t just chuck players into the first team ‘to give them a fair crack of the whip’. Russell Martin is hardly going to go down as a Swansea great, but he’s in a much better place to judge Cullen, Whittaker, Joseph, Latibaudiere and Ogbeta than anyone on here. It seems Duff (who also worked with Joseph at Cheltenham) agrees with him on at least two of the five.
| Whittaker gone on 17:19 - Jul 17 with 1306 views | heatwave | I don't believe Duff had any say in what he thought of him. He's been here 3 weeks. That's a pretty quick assessment in my opinion. Did he also have the same opinion of Joseph? We brought in 2 strikers who played regular for other teams for 2.5m and got shot of 2 who hardly kicked a ball for us for £1m. I think they were both going no matter what. | | | |

So do I and at least he will get a player who will have good work ethic. Imo whittaker will struggle at Plymouth in the championship when the sh!t hits the fan, I will doff my cap if he succeeds but I just don't he has the hunger to work that little bit harder.

Can you explain this a bit more? I had to check Barnsley Plymouth fixtures from last year after that statement. He played the last 12 minutes against Barnsley on the opening day of the season last year and was back here in March for the return.
