Morgan Whittaker just wasn’t going to fit in at Duff’s Swansea City 17th Jul 2023 12:48
Unhappy Morgan Whittaker will have a smile on his face this morning as he joins Plymouth Argyle on a permanent transfer. 1

The fact you’ve had to go back five years to find an example kind of proves my point.

I just picked an obvious, extreme example. Many managers like to judge players entirely on training performances which is missing the forest for the trees. Match day is what's actually important. Training is just preparation. Bale at the peak of his powers at Spurs sat out training half the time or just had a massage. Maybe Russell Martin would have had Latibeaudiere in the side over him because he always gave it everything and was polite to the staff, and fans would be congratulating him for it because "he would know best, he sees him in training innit".

If training performances decided who the best players were then Fulton would have been a success in the PL days.

Some of the greatest of players weren’t that great trainers .It’s often the case great trainers are simply just that .
Nothing like a game.

It decides who is good or not

Well if that's the case I'm wrong.
I've been wrong before.
Don't think Whittaker will ever look back on Swansea as a great move.
(I'm probably right here tho')

You can always tell from the bye bye page on any official site the impact a player makes.

Morgan Whittaker has completed a transfer to Plymouth Argyle for an undisclosed fee, subject to international clearance. The 22-year-old enjoyed a successful loan spell at Home Park last season, and now joins the Pilgrims in a permanent move. Whittaker made 37 appearances for the Swans following his arrival from Derby County in January 2021. He scored six goals, including a hat-trick against his new club in a Carabao Cup tie in August 2021.

If Bale had never cut it in training, he’d never have broken through at Southampton.

You’re now using one of the best players in the world at the time, to make an argument for pitching young players into the first team.

I don’t know how they trained, I do know that just because they’ve barely played doesn’t mean they haven’t been given a chance. It’s not the egg and spoon race.

And he did know best compared to fans who hadn’t seen them train, had barely seen them play, had never heard of them before they signed for us. but wanted to give them a run anyway.

Twice he was loaned out for game time, twice he came back and failed to impress. A new manager comes in and he is sold on. Rooney didn't rate him that's why he came to us. So how was he handled badly. Sometimes you have to look at the player.

Decent reply.
You may well have a point butIm looking at only his treatment at Swansea.why did he fit in at Plymouth and how did Schumacher do that.
That is what should be asked .
Rooney is not a great manager really

The expectation on him will be huge now. Unproven at championship level and ignored for whatever reason by three managers, Cooper, Martin and Duff. I would say he needs to make a point or two.

Plymouth are hailing him as the answer to many problems they thought they were going to get in the championship. I just don’t think he is good enough.

I maintain that from what I saw Plymouth played with a ridged one up front and two behind with Whittaker on the right of the two, the perfect position for him. He was never going to play there for us, we seemed to play Piroe there and sometimes Ntcham, no way was he good enough to be preferred to one of those. He can't play up front or as a wide player, he doesn't work hard enough, hold the ball up well or cross a ball at pace. Comparing what he did in a league one Plymouth team can't be compared to a Championship team looking to push on this season. Realistically how many other Championship teams were in for him. Plymouth playing the system they do will find it very hard this season, how often when we played one up snd two behind were we crushed of any space and Whittaker is no Piroe.

I thought he looked talented in his cameos for us, he just didn’t put the effort in. I can quite easily see him being a big fish at Plymouth in league one. I’m sure that would boost his confidence.

Whittaker has gone to a team whose manager seems to know how to play him, in the position he wants, he doesn't have to comvince him of his qualities and he enjoyed his time there. Contrast that to having a new manager to whom he has to prove his usefulness to, in a team that had trouble getting into, leaving on the fringes of the team leaving him unable to fulfill his dreams.
Good luck to him but not at our expense and hope we have a nice bit of money for him to go towards our development as a team.

They are now. I was replying to a post wondering how he fitted in so well there last season.

I’m sure he’ll have a bigger role there than he would have here next season though.

With him and Joseph going that's two significant investments into promising EFL youth resulting in losses. Pretty sure Derby are getting a % of whatever we've had off Plymouth. We only come out ahead if they turn him into a superstar and we end up with our own % somewhere down the line.

A lesson is buying players that managers don't want, and hiring managers not willing to work with and develop what they're given. Morgan wasn't here a week before Cooper was whinging to the press about wanting to borrow another striker to shine up for richer clubs.

Fair enough, I couldn't see him having any role here. He would have gone to the first club prepared to pay our valuation.

Cooper wasn't much interested in working with anyone other than his England u17's. We could have signed a player with a vastly different pedigree and he'd have done little but whine. Martin was even worse when it came to bipping about the players he wanted rather than getting the best out of the talent he already had available.

We can but hope that Duff is cut from a different cloth than his predecessors.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

It will be interesting to see if we loan anyone out this season or just bomb them out.

If the press reports in Jsnuary were accurate we turned down 2 million from Rangers.
Now we sell him for 1 million seems a bit odd.

I think duff is a far better coach than both cooper and martin, therefore he will work with whoever we have left at the club and more importantly I think he will get who he wants, which obviously helps.
