Morgan Whittaker just wasn’t going to fit in at Duff’s Swansea City 17th Jul 2023 12:48
Unhappy Morgan Whittaker will have a smile on his face this morning as he joins Plymouth Argyle on a permanent transfer. 1

If the press reports in Jsnuary were accurate we turned down 2 million from Rangers.
Now we sell him for 1 million seems a bit odd.

There are a lot of things to open minded about here.

1. There was no bid in January
2. The bid might not have been as high as reported
3. Any bid might have had a low initial payment with add ons possibly going up to 2M.
4. Whittaker might have made it clear that he was only going to go to Plymouth and was not interested in any other teams.

A lot of add ons with deals never get triggered so 1M flat from Plymouth with future add ons might be as good as any bid that came in during January......if any bid came in at all.

I think duff is a far better coach than both cooper and martin, therefore he will work with whoever we have left at the club and more importantly I think he will get who he wants, which obviously helps.

We can but hope.

What we have available is what we have available. Cooper and Martin whinged about that despite it being made clear to them from the off how this club operates. Only time will tell if Duff grasps the obvious.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

All depends on what the board have told him, I feel that they are coming across as more open and honest, which bodes well 🤞

Duff will meet with the decision makers over the scrambled egg and beans at Fairwood three times a week.

This will have a good effect as issues and explanations will be dealt with there and then. One can imagine Levien not being available for a zoom session until next Tuesday which would frustrate.

All the pressure is now on Watson. If Duff wants a player the answer is "have a chat with Paul". He is due back here in 30 minutes.

Met him at an away game once a true character.

The expectation on him will be huge now. Unproven at championship level and ignored for whatever reason by three managers, Cooper, Martin and Duff. I would say he needs to make a point or two.

Plymouth are hailing him as the answer to many problems they thought they were going to get in the championship. I just don’t think he is good enough.

Plymouth fans saying he is there first million pound signing incrrdible really.

And some of ours don't think we spend enough.

His sulky face and general stropping about was a good indicator.

Couple that with his couldn't be arsed attitude from January on I I am not in the right state of mind to travel for a game after he was recalled gave it away for me.

I agree.
And I don’t think I saw him have a good game for us. I know he didn’t start many, but he just looked poor every time I saw him play. Losing the ball, not chasing back. A good strike on him, but that’s about it for me.
I nicknamed him Shittaker from the start. Shame we didn’t take the bigger offer, but I’d be glad for another player to have a go in his place, be it a youngster from our ranks or a new signing. Much better options out there.

I do hope he does well at Plymouth though. Nothing against the kid. Plus we should get some extra bunse from addons then too

I don't believe Duff had any say in what he thought of him. He's been here 3 weeks. That's a pretty quick assessment in my opinion.
Did he also have the same opinion of Joseph?
We brought in 2 strikers who played regular for other teams for 2.5m and got shot of 2 who hardly kicked a ball for us for £1m.
I think they were both going no matter what.

Duff obviously knew what Joseph was about. If he really thought he would fit in with his philosophy, do you really think he would be gone? No chance.

Same with Whittaker.
3 weeks is enough to make an impression. The kid wanted to leave mun

With him and Joseph going that's two significant investments into promising EFL youth resulting in losses. Pretty sure Derby are getting a % of whatever we've had off Plymouth. We only come out ahead if they turn him into a superstar and we end up with our own % somewhere down the line.

A lesson is buying players that managers don't want, and hiring managers not willing to work with and develop what they're given. Morgan wasn't here a week before Cooper was whinging to the press about wanting to borrow another striker to shine up for richer clubs.

You can’t say Martin didn’t give young players a chance though, especially if they put the work in

Struggling to think of many young players who got chances under Martin. Oli Cooper at a push maybe.

One of the first things he did was to replace Benda. Congreve's development has stalled completely. Whittaker we all know was basically persona non grata to him. He persisted with Cullen, but a lot of people seem to think that he's younger than he actually is (Piroe is younger).

From the reported fee it seems we have just freed up wages on the deal and accepted the loss in earnings paid.
£795,000 paid
£1,000,000 sold
£215,000 difference
Wages (had we paid all when he was on loan) £530,000

Indeed he is not.
Sadly,as he s Welsh, any criticism becomes personal.
He got a few tap ins if I remember right and he runs around doing what he is told.

It was too early for Congreve, as I suggested at the time. I don't think he has stalled, he had a bit of a setback after the early subbing (was very poor with Wales in the weeks afterwards) but he's progressing fine since. His starting point was just some distance below Championship level.

Congreve being placed ahead of Cooper in preseason was strange then and seems even stranger now. The hope is that those experiences will pay dividends medium to long term. DJ, Rodon and Roberts were all in their 20s before getting any meaningful senior football, which was less than ideal.

Finishing tap ins is easy. Consistently making the runs to get easy chances is an under appreciated skill.

It’s probably more because he leaves it all on the pitch every time than his nationality. Adrian Forbes was similar, did better for us than many more naturally talented players.

You have to be in the right place at the right time to score taps ins.
Once he was given game time his strike rate became impressive.
His type of player used to be called 'goal poacher'and has given manybplayers a good living, e.g. Gary Linker and Allie McCoist.
Liam Cullen Characteristics
+ Strengths
Headed attempts - Very Strong
Through balls - Strong
Finishing - Strong
Holding on to the ball - Strong
- Weaknesses
Defensive contribution - Weak

Not saying he's the answer o fantastic just that he's better than he's getting credited for.
