Morgan Whittaker just wasn’t going to fit in at Duff’s Swansea City 17th Jul 2023 12:48
Unhappy Morgan Whittaker will have a smile on his face this morning as he joins Plymouth Argyle on a permanent transfer. 1

There's an old saying in football you defend from the front ,chasing and harrying the opposition defence often leads to opportunity and chances created

Brewster has been a terrible signing for them, hardly scored a goal & hamstrings as fragile as Montero. On his wages no thank you

Daniel Sturridge struggled most of his career with his hamstrings so much so I think the situation got into his head and the slightest twinge and he'd be up on the treatment table again, lots of these speedy players suffer the same, fast twitch muscles they reckon.

Latest …

Argyle continued their unbeaten start to pre-season claiming a 1-1 draw against Torquay United at Plainmoor, with record signing Morgan Whittaker scoring a stunning goal on his return to the club. It was from that resulting corner that Whittaker well and truly announced his return to Argyle as the ball broke to him on the edge of the box and the forward lashed an unstoppable volley into the far corner.

Clubs suit some players and vice versa I suppose, early days though.

That's my attitude to it also. Why should one player be allowed to do very little except stand around waiting for the killer chance?

We expect our defenders to score a few goals too. We expect our full backs to get up and down and get a few assists, it's a team sport and they should all be putting the same effort in.
Thinking back to last season, our defence was often closed down by the oppo forwards and we gave away some very silly goals simply because the oppo strikers did some work.

if we are going to pay the biggest fee and the highest wages for a striker, why are we going to allow him to do the least work? it doesn't mean running around pointlessly but it does mean putting some effort in and if they are cute about it, clever with their positioning and movement they can cause defences trouble without being headless chickens.

I suspect that letting Joseph and Whittaker go may stand out in near future as two of our biggest regrets.

I believe letting those two will/has enabled us to get more suitable players (for us) in. If we progress there will be no regrets.

I disagree.

I wanted us to get rid of whittaker in January.

As most will know I don't rate him because of his lack of workrate and his attitude.

I didn't see much of Joseph but if him going meant Yates coming in that's good enough for me.

Plenty of the room in the game for brilliant passengers. Just look at Bale in his heyday.

In fairness we don't know what happens in the background, with Whittaker in particular it hasn't been just one manager. I would always prefer a manager to do the best for the club not an individual player. Hopefully this is what has been done.

Seems to me it’s guaranteed funds to facilitate something else that Duff or Watson has brought to the table, rather than persevere with them. It purely a numbers/business decision, not a footballing or personality one.

Fair crack? So Rooney, Cooper, Martin and to a lesser extent Duff didn't give him a fair crack then?

We has been through this many times, there is a big reason why these managers have binned him off.

Every player on the park has a defensive role, even the strikers, they should press just like a midfielder, what I have been told and more Importantly seen with my own eyes is whittakers lack of workrate off the ball.

Most managers want fit footballers as the game had changed totally, it looks like whittaker got away with it at Plymouth because he was scoring regularly, there must be players there who cover his @rse, he will get away with it in league 1 but he won't in the championship.

I agree.
And I don’t think Whittaker is a striker anyway, so should be doing a lot more.

An attacking player has to be exceptionally talented in the modern game to get away with not covering defensively, Messi is a prime example but there aren't many.
Whittaker may go on to be a success at Plymouth but he showed very little in a Swans shirt so now he's left I don't really care either way (unless we have a sell on clause!)
He showed no signs of being exceptional for us unfortunately.

I understand Duff wanting to move him on but I’m referring to the managers he previously worked under here. I don’t particularly care what Rooney thought but if my memory serves me right he was prospect there at Derby and not one that they wanted to let go easily.

Yeah, that could be right, but I don’t think either has been given much of a shot at it, same for the boy Ogbeta(?) who seems to be the forgotten man, I don’t even know if we’ve moved him on?

Well the derby fans I spoke to at the away game 3 years said different, they basically said he was lazy and had an attitude 🤔

So we don't actually know what Rooney thought then.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.
