| Matt Grimes 08:49 - Jun 4 with 4512 views | Whiterockin | Disliked by many of our supporters, but was it Grimes or the way he was asked to play. He was captain on and off the pitch and did a lot to help new players/families integrate into the area, but again many didn't like his relaxed style to captaincy. Similarly to Jack Cork who was not appreciated by supporters, both left us and captained sides to promotion. So were supporters right or wrong. https://coventryobserver.co.uk | | | | |
| Matt Grimes on 09:37 - Jun 4 with 3685 views | pembsjack | He was a quality player following team orders of keep the ball at all costs, play it safe and don't be too expensive. He did nothing wrong other than doing as he was told and coached. In many ways he was a scapegoat for the fans, the problem was the managers in charge. I | | | |

I think ‘the handbrake’ was under specific orders at times. It’s often that a head coach, irrespective of who they are haven’t got the ability of some of their players. We can choose any manager at the Swans since Michael Laudrup for that. It shouldn’t be lost on people though that he now does have a head coach who was an exceptional midfielder which has seen a different Matt Grimes. However, there’s was no excuse for him not seeing blatantly obvious forward passes and there are so many that could have resulted in attacking positions and chances for the Swans. He was so negative at times it affected the teams momentum and ability to win games.

Spot on The number of times attacks were stunted by backward passes was unbelievably frustrating Following managers/ coaches orders up to a point maybe, but not the number of times it happened More like a fear of being adventurous or giving the ball away affecting stats
| Matt Grimes on 12:29 - Jun 4 with 3418 views | Dr_Winston | Negative was his default setting. Some managers were able to get more out of him, others indulged it. I'd suggest that the only time he was really "playing to orders" was under Potter, briefly Duff and now Lampard. If anything his achievements at Coventry only further underline how little he actually contributed compared to what he was capable of during his time here. | |

Britton didn’t want to go, only went because of Sousa and to the wrong type of team in Sheffield Utd,we were a much better team when he came back

OMG A distant nicely average player still missed by some Look at the state we’re in He was not disliked or hated, get that straight m The way he played was Rather different He killed most attacking moves stone dead His passing stats impress the impressionable , most were sideways or backwards What is wrong with people Why pine for him We’ve a wealth of outstanding and skilful players on our history and he’s not even top ten

When you say "look at the state we're in"... What do you mean? A solid mid-table championship side with players on the books capable of playing at a higher level. A sound financial footing backed by some seriously rich investors (albeit others will know far more about our financial affairs than myself). A good exciting up and coming coach who has proven in his first season to have the tactical knowledge to play the right team against the opposition and make changes within games when needed? It's not all bad.

Indeed. Our points tally has gone from 57 to 61 to 64 in the last 3 seasons, so that is on an upwards trajectory. We probably need 70 points to make the play-offs next season, so not that far of a climb. There's a lot to be positive about.

Hopefully some players who are tempted yo move away may think twice given the changes seem under Matos. A word of caution other managers will have seen what Matos is doing and will try and counter to stifle his plan A but luckily there seems to be a plan B and most importantly plans C and D

I mean this The state where our fans fret over a player who left the club A player who cost us possible wins by utter negativity Captain of the club who , apparently, didn’t like our tactics but didn’t have the guts to tell the coach then to build his stats , hang on , then foxtrot Oscar at the first opportunity We have some shot pine of Martin too, a proven failure That state Up arrow me too

I dont think supporters are fretting thats just an over dramatisation on your part, we are just discussing a former player who has captained a side to promotion. You don't have to join in. For what its worth in my opinion we are better off without him and he is better off without us. He is a good player just not for us, there is no need to go all drama queen about him.

It could be a couple less with 8th place in the play offs, I expect West Ham and Wolves to take a lot of points off teams.

That's how I see it. He's bettered himself by moving away and we seem to have improved without him. So that's a win all around. Like many others I suspect I like to see how our ex players get on and in the main I hope they do well..

Martin took the swans to within 3 points of the play offs. Despite any other personal belief or reasoning that is a fact. He left the Swans as Steve Cooper before him and took his new side to the Premier League. We need to move on though.

Spot on assessment Keith. Too many times we saw a player who passed backwards and didn't take the opportunity to pass forward. If Grimes played bad the team played bad. We're lucky now we have a mixture of players in that area that won't cause such reliance.

"However, there’s was no excuse for him not seeing blatantly obvious forward passes and there are so many that could have resulted in attacking positions and chances for the Swans." I agree. That's the difference between an "average or good" middie and an "above average or great" one. Kicking the ball sideways around the perimeter or backwards to re-group every time, just because your coach tells you to play this way, doesn't mean that you can't deviate when the opportunities are staring you in your face to move the ball forward. It may also show that you're not confident enough in your ability to make a long, tight pass forward into the interior or down one of the sides of the field to a winger who's on-side and beating the defence.

I thought he was very unambitious as a player. Safe option 99% of the time or putting players into trouble. People still lauding him on here and blaming the players around him or coaches have to admit he rarely put himself out in a game for us or actually role his sleeves up and try to inspire the team when the chips were down. The least effective captain I’ve probably seen in 50 years of watching the game. If he’s playing “out of his skin” now gor Coventry should our fans be angry about that???
| Matt Grimes on 08:23 - Jun 6 with 2499 views | Dr_Winston | It's hard to avoid the conclusion that the primary reason why Grimes played the way he did was for stats padding purposes. Year after year of posting high numbers in the areas that get your xG types excited but bore the pants off everyone else. He wanted the Premier League move, even held off signing a new contract to try and wangle a free until it became obvious that nobody was all that interested. Certainly nobody at that level. Lampard gambled and it sorta paid off, although it'll be interesting to see how he does in the Prem next season. | |

Its always interesting to see how former players turn out. If you take Whittaker for example, he was a problem with us and needed to go in my opinion. But there were many times last season we could have done with him wide right, just my thoughts.
