Now, there seems to be a stalemate based upon a new contract offer and the release clause inserted by Swansea.

We were happy with the value with the release clause (whatever it may be) when we signed him. Give him his credit, he's taken the opportunity to step up and played very well, so if his value has exceeded that then there's little we can do other than what we are doing which is trying to offer him better terms.
We may not get his full value, but we have had a very good player for 12 months and will make a profit.
Taking any clause out of consideration I think we'd sell if we were offered anything north of 16-18M for him depending on the recruitment team finding a replacement of value [Post edited 10 Jun 23:21]

It seems to me to be anti competitive and possibly therefore potentially notionally illegal.
If all Championship clubs have a clause like this say for example.
"our player will have an buy clause of £15m for any club in the Champions league the previous year".
This means that any team outside they group would be notionally obliged to pay more according to the contract. It seem to me the agents are therefore making life easier for Champions leagues teams and harder for teams outside the top 4 or 5 teams. It is a form of rigging the tournaments by people who are supposed to be affiliated to the league.
This form of contract looks to maintain the status quo and prevent competition by agents who work in a loosely audited field. . I think football is riddled with these injustices enshrined in contracts. Man City and Chelsea have clearly driven a coach and horses through honest open competition. This laxness could see many titles declared invalid which makes a farce of the whole sport. |  |
