The GE threat is probably the only card Starmer has left to play in order to cling to power. Launch a coup against me and I’ll call an election immediately. Labour have zero chance of winning and they know it and it’s probably Burnham’s last chance for the top job.

I seen a poll a few weeks ago (YouGov i think it was) when it was known that Burnham was going to stand in Makerfield.
When asked who people would vote for in the next General Election with Starmer Labour leader, Reform came out on top, when asked who people would vote for in the next General Election with Burnham Labour leader then Labour came out top.

His promoter in the BBC this afternoon was using world like "change" and "resetting" and "communicating" but only came up a with very tired suggestion. More taxes on assets but nothing on trimming the ballooning welfare are budget.

A by-election called solely to get Burnham elected to get rid of Starmer and it was achieved, this result will have no bearing on a GE. Labour now have a decision to make, change leader and change policies or just change leader. Any leadership challenge will mean prospective leaders will need to set out their plans for their party if elected. Brilliant result in so many ways. Reform beaten for a start and by such a large margin, which considering their wins in the local elections just a month ago, is remarkable.
It would be different if Burnham had scraped a win but his winning with such a margin will definitely make ALL Labour MP's sit up and think what he may be able to do across the whole of the UK. |
