The police are tieing themselves in knots and not paying attention to semantics.
If you say, there is no evidence of X, but we are still investigating. Does that mean X has been discounted or not. That depends on the interpretation of the audience and both conclusions can be considered valid.
The answer is to be unambiguous, ' we are still investigating ' will suffice.
By being ambiguous, they leave themselves open to question and loss of trust. |

Most of the Mushers on here seem to be right wing Anglophiles this thread is about the murder of Ann Widdecombe who stood up for free speech, yet ironically if some people say anything on this site that the cabal of right wing Anglophiles disagree with then instead of debating they want people banned , personally I don't get it.

This is partly where my comment relating to the internet earlier in this thread came from.
With the exception of when required to look for a suspect / evidence it would be great if the police could release no details of a crime until a suspect has been charged, then issue a statement with a name and the charges against that person.
The internet being what it is without some information there would be riots and misinformation everywhere. We've seen it before and some of that misinformation is still repeated (even by poiliticians). Even now the partial release of information is being exploited and misrepresented.
Even now, we don't know how the terrorism investigation has been triggered. I'd guess the person arrested wasn't known to the authorities gave "no comment" when questioned and when the police have looked trhough his stuff have found a potential terrorrist motive. But this is being labelled as two tier policing, it's anything but, just the process of investigating a crime. | | | |

I think your last paragraph could well be hitting the nail on the head. Guy arrested, not known to Prevent or counter terrorist services, has his phone etc seized, is interviewed gives a plausible account and is then released.
Phone or other searches undertaken on items seized during the arrest etc after he’s been released could have yielded information suggesting potential terrorist motive.
Searching phones, computers can be difficult and take time especially when the owner won’t give the password etc. In addition, material could have been deleted and not be visible during the initial search, but a subsequent examination by an expert could have located and recovered deleted files still held deep in the devices memory.

The police have certainly not covered themselves in glory on this one. They made an arrest, confidently asserted publicly there was no political motive and then promptly realised they got the wrong guy and let him out. During that time period the real perpetrator could have been out targeting another politician. Worst case scenario It could potentially have developed into a spree. | |
