| Swansea City v Blackburn Rovers : Match Thread on 08:26 - Nov 1 by jack247 | Agree with everyone saying Fulton was our MOM. He’s having his best season by far and is among our best players every game. Matos is probably the first manager to allow him to just play to his strengths every game. Have to admit I always rated him as a combative midfielder but underestimated his ability to constantly be in the right place to snuff out attacks before they start. I thought he’d be phased out two years ago. Turns out he just needed the right manager. |
Jay Fulton, the wasted years.
| Swansea City v Blackburn Rovers : Match Thread on 10:00 - Nov 1 with 1558 views | Dr_Winston | Fulton has always been a consistently decent player. Feels like I've spent a lot of time over the years making that argument. It's also absolutely not a coincidence that Leon and Joe recommended to Matos that he go straight into the team for VM's first game in charge. They knew the score. This is just the first time since maybe the Cooper era where he's been a regular starter as opposed to someone dropped in for a game or two here and there. It also helps that he's no longer being blamed for what happened when he got paired with Grimes. | |

In fairness, you have and I’d say he’s more than consistently decent now. I thought he was our best player yesterday amid some serious competition. It’s just taken the right manager to play him to his strengths and not put him in situations that don’t suit him. As it happens, exactly the same has happened to Grimes. Two good players, not a good partnership.
| Swansea City v Blackburn Rovers : Match Thread on 10:16 - Nov 1 with 1507 views | Dr_Winston | One of the things that does make me wonder is why he's never had a Scotland call up. Not sure they've had the strength in depth over the last 10-15 years to reasonably ignore a player with nigh on 400+ career games, three quarters of which have come at either Premier League or Championship level. | |

Its great you enjoyed your day, you picked the right one come. I always bang on about movement and positioning off the ball, I'm glad someone sees what I'm talking about. I don't think people can appreciate this on the TV, what do you think.

Its something most fans dont do or appreciate and you never will undersatnd it from watchimg on tv. Many years ago an ex player of ours told me to follow a player and not the ball especially a player whose selection is criticsed...it is an eyeopener

| Swansea City v Blackburn Rovers : Match Thread on 18:32 - Oct 31 by Dr_Winston | Excellent response to the disappointment of last week. It would be easy to claim that Blackburn were poor but I don't think we gave them any chance at all in that first half to get a foothold in the game our press was so good. The pairing of Fulton and Eustaquio in midfield was on top to the point where we should probably thank whatever virus took Stamenic out of contention. Jay covering the deeper role (and the defensive work he did in the second half deserves huge applause) freed SE to basically run the game. What a footballing brain he's got. Was always where he needed to be, and some of his passes were almost "no look" given his awareness of what was going on around him. I'll single those two out, but everyone played well. Starters, subs, the lot. [Post edited 31 Oct 18:40]

They’d won 4 drawn 1 and lost one in their last six so we probably made them look poor rather than them just being rubbish. A great win and two new goal scorers to add to this seasons roster. Can we win at pompey - a good chance. Win at Birmingham and we really would be cooking again. Nice to see Key get on and Parente too.

Its a completely different view from the armchair. We have chatted many times about how we see movement off the ball from players, things you don’t see on tv. Dyer was a prime example, he never stood still.

Its one of the reasons I don't enjoy watching us on a stream, I enjoy watching the game not the ball. The way Stewart yesterday and Idah previously pull defenders out of position to create space is exceptional. Vipotnik in my opinion just likes to shoot, this season we are better as our position obviously shows and goals are coming ftom throughout the team.

Didn't Martin ignored him after his return from suspension the when we need a little more in the midfield to make us better defensively, would have been a case of Grimes, Downes and Fulton and one other because on his eventually return there was an upturn of results. For me it is not about playing him as a defensive midfielder so much but as a more fluid player able to progress up the pitch with his work rate but able to do it without fear of leaving gaps because other players in the midfield have the abilities and read the game to cover him. Eustaquio seems to have those abilities .

Maybe we’ve struck oil here with the Fulton and Eustaquio midfield axis. This season they have shown they are high end performers but both with excellent footballing brains. It could be the making of our midfield- the magic formula that we have two very god players who complement each other perfectly. Nothing against Marko whom could even play in a much more advanced area in front of them which would give us a very aggressive midfield set up For some games. I suppose that’s the joy of it now - with so much depth our options are frightening. I wouldn’t mind if Almeida turned up in the next window as he is sheer class. He’s on loan at RC Santander now but they have struggled a bit. He is a fantastic player though one addition you could almost nail on promotion with.

Spot on Blackburn couldn’t handle us in the first half , like rabbits in headlights You can only play what’s in front of you and that’s exactly what we did, could even have been a bigger score but 4 goals and importantly a clean sheet was fantastic Great performances from all the team ,especially Fulton , Lissah ,Eom ,Opoku and a great strikers goal from Stewart who did great in his first start We look so much better and dangerous moving the ball forward quickly and when we do,I think we can beat any of the teams in the championship Keep it up lads YJB COYS

| Swansea City v Blackburn Rovers : Match Thread on 18:34 - Oct 31 by jack_lord | Good result and really should have been at least 6-0. I think they must have been told to ease off. Great passing, some things didn't come off which, with the other chances would have resulted in a massacre and we could completely forget the drubbing last week. I think that Fulton had an excellent game and seemed to pop up in every area to help out. Stewart playing up top with that formation is what I was alluding to a couple of weeks ago. |
I don't think it was because we eased off, Blackburn tightened up and pressurised the ball more, goals could be important at the end of the season as well, so make hay while the sun shines would or should be the call. [Post edited 1 Nov 12:32]

The issue with Stamenic has been there all season. He's too slow on the ball. I think he's got it in his locker to play quicker, but it seems very much like a Grimes situation to me. He's got to be forced to do it. Also similar to Grimes in that there are a lot of people who insist that he's one of the first names on the teamsheet when yesterday proved that we can manage quite nicely without him. Maybe are even improved by it. The midfield balance was damn near perfect yesterday. Fulton snuffing out any issues defensively allowed Eustaquio the freedom to act as an offensive weapon. We moved the ball a lot faster and a lot smarter than we have for much of the season. I'd still prefer a more out and out creative option to Widell as much as I rate basically everything else he does, but if we picked the same three again for Pompey I'd have no complaints. An out and out creative option only works in this system if they also do all the pressing and dirty work Widdel/Stamenic/Franco do on top of unlocking defences. I’d assume a player that complete would be hard for us to get/keep. If they don’t, the flair isn’t worth losing control of midfield for. It’s not too dissimilar to playing Idah and Vipotnik together and wondering why neither of them are as involved as when they play alone. To be honest, Eustaquio makes us tick. If he’s in there, I’m happy with any combination of Fulton, Stamenic and Franco/Widdell. If one of the last two start, the other replaces them after an hour or so.

As regards Eustaquio is there on the injury that he went off with yesterday? he'll be a loss if we lose him for anymore than 2 or 3 games, he was superb yesterday.

I’m going to give a special shout out to Fulton who proves me wrong constantly and long may he do that. Stewart’s goal was brilliant and he seems to be the type if striker we’ve been missing. I hope we can keep him fit. The only thing to bear in mind is that Blackburn were awful and most unlike a Mowbray side. They gave us time and space which I thought he’d have made sure we didn’t. But that doesn’t take anything away from our lads who were good both on and off the ball and showed hunger to regain the ball if it was lost. Hope they keep it up. 3 of the next 4 games are horrendous and Portsmouth is never an easy place to go so they need to show their quality in each of these games. |
Mowbray quotes "If you'd have seen some of our football this year, it's been pretty good, but against that intensity, we really struggled," he said.
