I think Fulton, like Lowe is jaded and doesn’t have the same energy. Not sure on what to suggest for Hourihane, I’m shocked by how much we have had to carry him. The lack of games isn’t really an excuse imo he’s been here a while now.

Lowe just can't do the basics again...can't hold or control ball.makes wrong options looks a very poor player again..

| Conor Hourihane : Pro’s and Con’s on 09:05 - Feb 21 with 1318 views | Thornburyswan | Noting we start 5 defenders plus at least one holding CM we should be able to accommodate Hourihane plus with our, relative to the rest of the top 6/7, limited goal scoring options I think we need to find a way to play him. For me we need to freshen up & give a few of our benchers a start, a couple of suggestions if I may :- 1. Radical option (least likely from what I’ve seen of Cooper) - switch to a 4-3-1-2 formation to both freshen & challenge the opposition differently e.g. Freddie - Roberts/Guehi/Bennett/Bidders - Smith/Grimes/Fulton - Hourihane - Ayew/Whittaker with bench of Hamer, Nauts, Manning, Cabango, Latibeaudiere, Dhanda, Lowe, Cooper & Arriola (assuming Morris is out for a spell). 2. Tweak our usual formation but rest Lowe, Fulton & Nauts to give either Whittaker or Arriola plus Smith & Latibeaudiere starts - clearly simpler to do & less risky but also less innovative & less likely to deliver a material improvement. | | | |

An impact player | |

What we needed in that AM space was a MGW high tempo high energy game changer. CH adds nous, pedigree, professionalism, and a wicked wand of a left foot. Most importantly he gave us an injection of confidence. Can see him sitting deeper, orchestrating, protected behind by Guehi (who’s a budding CDM) and Bennett’s positional prowess. Grimes could be our AM, bundles of energy to bomb up and down, deft passer and excellent tackler to drive our high press. We are fortunate to have the puzzle of how best to utilise such a talent.

Hourihane sitting alongside Grimes is the only option I can see for him. We will miss grimes too much defensively if we move him to AM. I would like to see Ariolla played there. Quick, nippy, will close down defenders and obviously has a bit of quality about him aswell.

Whatever we do it will be to accommodate Hourihane. Just can’t see us doing much with him as a part of a midfield three, he is a poor grafter, maybe just ahead of a three man midfield of - Grimes. Fulton. Smith. (Manning) Then of course we are narrow, Arriola wouldn’t fit the formation. But it’s still accommodating him. He offers so much, he can’t be benched. That’s the issue. Up front with Ayew ? The more I think about that, it may work, goes back to the issue that he won’t be dropped.

Yeah the reality is Cooper will accommodate him, definitely. Hourihane needs to repay that with goals, which in fairness he does when given chance but it also means the two next to him need to be able to put a massive shift in and yesterday Grimes/Fulton weren’t able to do that.

Cooper sees him as a talisman and that's fine but a Gylfi he is not. He is lazy but has a fantastic talent for dead ball kicks and it's hard to resist. It's ok if we can compensate. We need Smithy for that.He was on the bench wasn't he. It's why Im not chief boy in the Steve fan club

For me Hourihane has to be benched and used as an impact player. We can’t really afford a Gylfi in the championship- in the Premier league teams will give space and not be as competitive by the championship is another ball game. There’s no excuse for a lack of desire and Korey Smith must have been thinking “WTF?” On the subs bench. A real nasty wake up call for the whole squad and Cooper who ignored the warnings from the Forest game. Fulton has been unfairly criticized but if CH lack of effort doubles Fulton’s defensive work then he’s going to look knackered and jaded.

Smith to be fair has just come back from injury I don’t think he will be overly worried. He will start Wednesday, I have a funny feeling it will be for Grimes aswell.

That is the key thing for me, when the team is bouncing, when they have the energy we can carry Houri's lack of athleticism. What we saw yesterday was a flat team, no energy. We were slow everywhere and in that situation even MGW yesterday could have done nothing. It comes down to being overplayed for me. When players have needed a rest they haven't had one and now too many of them are flat. I'm sure Coops will continue to pick Houri but he needs to rest 4/5 others and accept that could mean 2/3 weeks of poor results but hopefully we can get back to our best when players have had a break. Part of the reason our defence was so good was because they all defended and with energy, without energy we are vulnerable in defence and poor in attack.

Hourihane is s skilful creative player. He’s not destructive or defensive. He’s fitted in very well here and has already contributed four league goals from his five/six? league games which is exceptional, three of them being very high in quality I don’t buy this “lazy” player stuff as he’s certainly not. He is though an offensive minded midfielder with a left foot that’s already been used to devastating effect here. It’s all just about balance in the team isn’t it and SC has shown he’s more than capable of getting that balance right. Players would prefer to play games than train. It’s a hectic schedule but they will be relishing it. None of them are in the veteran category, they’re all fit and raring to go except possibly Bennett now with his ongoing issue. And of course Morris sadly. Re Hourihane there are no “cons”, it’s all good stuff. Yesterday was awful for everyone, it happens. Lots of over reaction too, that happens.

So would i, its nice being a threat from deadball situations again, but the rest of the side has to be structured to accommodate that little luxury.

Tend to agree..he's a great footballer with the eye first time passes..but we carry him when we not in possession and others got do work of two..can be great if on top but tends to not do enough for me.can be out game for 89 minutes but pop up with goal..but needs do more for me
