We would likely be near the bottom if Russ had been sacked on August 27th.

People will always look for negativity even after five wins in six with the swans on top of the championship form table. Martin has developed a side that is competitive and can beat anyone in a ridiculous championship this season.

He has worked with a limited budget, developed what many swans saw over time a squad that can compete. The swans score goals from all over the pitch and as a result of the manager bringing in a set piece coach specialist we also see set piece goals and restarts from any stop in play that are more effective.

The result is a team now who are more than likely to finish in the top ten playing attractive and respected football against the best sides in the league. As he said there will be blips, Saturday showed that but instead of his usual fall from grace he has learned from previous experience as we saw last night.

I’m uncertain at this point in the season what more he can do with what he has.

If we sneak into the top 6 at the end of the season, I would fancy us in the play offs.

Then we would have a new manager that we could ensure sets us up to play sensibly and get the results this squad deserves.

Currently it seems he’s being dragged kicking and screaming to play this way. As long as that’s happening then we may as well stick with him.

The minute he returns to his old ways we need to pull the trigger. He was teetering back to his old ways in the last game.

Sorry (not really), if that upsets anyone.

Which part do you believe indicates any upset?

As long as he continues to play Dr P ball then I’m relatively happy, if a little disconcerted that he will drop it for Martinball at any time.

So you have changed your mind then. On August 27 you said RM had to go.
Thanks for clearing that up 😎

No not changed my mind at all.

Russell plays Martinball - I want him sacked

Russell doesn’t play Martinball - I want him to remain

A very simple and constant equation that has been true since the start of his tenure.

Ok I ll bite,we could have brought it a more direct coach who utilised the players properly and didn’t loan out possibly key players.
We could be top three easily

We didn’t and we are where secure

I have said time and time again that patience is required and understanding.......both go hand in hand under the circumstances at the club.

We have a young manager and presently a young playing staff, we will be inconsistent but as long as the signs are there and improvement is happening(which it is) then the foundation is being built up row by row.

We tried quick success previously and the wall fell down because we didn't get the string footings in place.

Its going ok and if people want to put obstacles up then they are doing so to protect their reputation and pride and its not being done taking the whole situation into consideration.

We would have been Foolish to have sacked him in the early stages of the season........anyone who thought it wasn't thinking or acting rationally.

No, we are top of that form table because the tactics are correct which has given us the correct balance and %.

Unless you think we are still having 800 passes and 80% possession with 5% long balls every game.

If so I strongly suggest you take a look at the data since the start of that run of form. Happy to help you source it if you aren’t sure

In short, currently he is playing the way we have demanded for over a year (first half against Reading aside).

Who knows where we might be, if a new manager had us playing this more pragmatic way we may be top. What if we'd kept Josept here as bck up....

Saying we would definitely be anything is plain silly, we cannot predict the outcome.

As it stands most people arehappy with him now but there were plenty of boos not so long ago.

Sacking Russ after Blackburn wouldn't have been impatient, impatient is 12 games not 12 months.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Dr, no disrespect, but I watch a game to see the skill of the players on show and game plans working or not as and when etc.
I've no particular interest in data, in a game of football, I can work out where players can play to their best ability and read particular tactic's that suits a given match.
RM may or may not be a success, that I don't know, but I really doubt Fergie, Shanks, Busby, Bob Paisley, the special one or Klopp etc got in or get involved in much data or stats and these guys were successful in their own rights.

An there was me thinking the upturn was an influx of different players and coaches.
A goal keeper who is more commanding in the box and can make a decision about how he plays ball with what he sees in happening in front of him.
Cooper and Cundle introduction which has increased the work rate, movement, pressing and options in the opposition half.
A set piece coach who seems to utilise the qualities of our players.
The new younger players in defence adding move resilience and defensive options.

The team and coach are still naive I wonder where we will be when they get it right.
Will try enjoy it even with the frustrations involved.

That’s okay, some people like to get into the inner workings of the game, others don’t.

But that shouldn’t stop those that do like it from discussing it and explaining the effects of such changes.

I don’t think it’s any stretch to say if we had been playing this way from game 1 we may well be in the Premier League now. If not, then well positioned in the autos this season to make that challenge.

Agreed it’s nothing to do with patience, it’s about the manager dropping his pride and playing a way that is befitting of the club he represents. Over the last 8 games or so he has done that, other than a return to nonsense in the first half yesterday.

If he returns to that more regularly then he should be sacked, and a competent manager brought in willing to play this style as a default. We don’t have many squads with the capability to run riot in the league, we have one at our disposal now so I don’t want any more wasted time doing things that don’t work when we have a way that we know does work.

imagine if we had persisted with a style of play and line ups which were delivering poor results instead of changing goal keeper the introduction of Oli Cooper and a more pragmatic approach to game management.
Some dont want to see or admit that several things have changed..mainly a move from Martin's way...that has brought us our recent run of form....we had one last season too but that ended with a poor end of season and start to this season.

Yep, this “patience” rubbish was all about the style of play. We were told he would never sacrifice his principles of short passing and possession and we should get used to it and it will come good.

Well, it never did.

No amount of patience would have helped, it was flawed in every possible way. He’s since listened to common sense from some sort of source, after 14 wasted months.

Some are fairly happy that their version of the game is being played now, others are pretending that their patience with the old system is paying off - which of course is anything but as it’s on the scrap heap. Those to note what changes needed to be made have been entirely vindicated.

If we had sacked RM then we would have simply got to a sensible style of play a lot sooner, we are there now (ish) as we should have been months and months ago, he has saved himself by the skin of his teeth - but let’s not pretend it’s not simply down to implementing those changes that have been repeated ad nauseam on here for the best part of a year.

Why people are unable to accept the obvious and be happy after a win instead of going on rampage witch-hunts which are flawed and inaccurate in their entirety I’ll never be sure.

Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves, only a third through the season and it's the most open championship I have ever seen and things can change very quickly. There are still some issues, mainly we are still conceding more than we are scoring, if that carries on we won't be threatening promotion and the real weakness of the team is wing backs and its probably the most important clog to the system.

I still think Russell would love to start out playing Martinball every game, his tactics have been hampered by selecting Benda. He's had to concede that Benda is no sweeper keeper, hence the goalkick routine having to change and less build up play from the back. If Fisher was still in goal, we would be playing the old way.

I am still of the opinion that that towards the end of season we will be mid table, we concede far too many soft goals, we get games where we receive some real beatings and I still think we poor on the creating chances side. But if we are in touching distance by the end of January transfer window, maybe our owners will take a gamble.
