Some great photos there Dicky, can't believe how busy Oxford Street looks there.
Castle gardens was better left as greenery, the present day look is bleak and uninteresting, wasn't there talk of ripping it up.

If it was like that now, there’d be people living in there.

Whats the "churchy" looking building that would be in front of the remains of Swansea Castle by Pizz express?

Being upstairs in one going around the Gower was a pleasure

Totally agree the city looked nicer than it is now but a bit of rose tinted glasses here in the 70's and early 80's from St Thomas down to Swansea Bay beach it was a rank the old Weaver building, the rat infested marina area, the gas works, Swansea Beach when the tide was out full of oily slim to get down near the water.

I think the "new" Evening Post building by Morgans Hotel was built late 1960's and the castle buildings demolished in the 1970's.

Previous to it becoming the Evening Post offices, the Castle building had been the Post Office and then the Labour Exchange.

my memory may be unreliable but I remember there being 2 shops called Eddershaws?

A furniture shop and a smaller toy shop

my mum would drag me round town through the unbearably boring BHS, Fine fare and Co op, then when she said let s go to eddershaws my little heart would jump at the thought of some new hot wheels or action man accessories. Unfortunately it usually meant she wanted to look at chairs and sofas.

Ah yes the old Eddershaws before it moved to the enterprise zone. Also had a store in Cardiff near Legoland. Think Swansea one was the original. Sorry when they closed.

Great nursery and toy shop. Remember going up the steep narrow staircase to get in between the 2 parts of the building, bit like someone’s house. Bought our first pram there.

Was it on 2 levels or 3. Can’t remember, perhaps just those stairs made it seem higher.

I remember Eddershaws but Neath was were it was at for child hood memories for me, my nan used to live in Lon Las and used to take me and my sister to Neath fair in the 1970's on the "BIG" bus. That day was always on par with Xmas day. Always remember getting off at the bus stop at Neath train station and walking through Neath with all the market sellers shouting and calling really going for it selling their tat then onto the funfair (where Morrisons is now) the funfair seemed to go on for miles well for a 8 yr old it did, then after onto a café (for any of you Neathies I can't remember what it was called near a corner of Victoria gardens opposite conservative club??) for plaice & chips peas and a cup of tea for my nan same for us but real coca cola in a glass. Then back on the Big bus before it started getting dark to watch The Generation game and Parkinson.

Jesus wept I would give up everything I own and have just to have that afternoon with my old nan again

RIP Nan 1985 x

Eddershaws, Treasure, ‘top’ Woolworths and ‘bottom’ Woolworths, BHS, M&S, C&A, Debenhams, Chelsea Girl , Etams n the Quadrant, Eynons, Benetton (the mothership for us when we were teenagers), Principles (which was definitely posh back in the day), My Father’s Moustache, David Evans, JT Morgan, Dylans’s bookshop in Salubrious Passage, Duck Son and Pinker, John Ham’s and Picton Music, Uplands Book Shop.

Swansea was fantastic for shopping back in the day.

Bonfire night what a good shout when you were a bit older

It would start about 2 weeks before bonfire night, penny for the guy outside the pubs & clubs and inside quickly if they let you in, going round peoples houses asking for old stuff to burn, old chairs, tables, tyres (we called it collecting).Pinching from other gangs bonfires even setting fire to them before 5th Nov, trying to start the bonfire when it was pizzing down as it always rained on 5th Nov,throwing bangers in the bonfire, the bonfire still mouldering on 6 & 7th Nov....

Castle gardens around the time it was redeveloped had become a horrible place. A school friend of our daughter’s was molested there by a wino at that time.

Ha - Millets.

The other one I’ve remembered now (I couldn’t remember its name) was Clive Ranger - the jewellers. There was an H Samuel in the Quadrant as well and a Ratners.

before HMV opened, downstairs in John Menzies was a great place to browse LP's. Also upstairs in Uplands bookshop had a fantastic selection of picture discs on the wall.

I remember John Menzies for records - top Woolies as well.

And of course we had one of the early Virgin record shops on Union Street and Derrick’s on Oxford Street.
