He did but he also had Ayew who would guarantee 15 goals in a season... Martin doesn't even have that at present. Piroe will get goals but is young and needs another experienced striker who has a record of goals.

Let it go ffs, you are embarrassing yourself reveling in how bad we are, shows that you obviously like cooper more than the swans.
| New players please! on 22:23 - Aug 17 with 1159 views | Dr_Winston | Midfield remains the problem. Static and slow. Too many similar types in there all taking their lead from Grimes. | |

Too pass the ball quick players need to have good movement off the ball to show for it but everybody is static no one going in one going out dragging players to make space just making it easy for defenders

Grimes comes too deep and slows the play down to a standstill, at least Paterson tried to increase the pace. Several times tonight we had a forward pass on but turned backwards. 2 years of Cooperball isn't going to be altered so easily. If Martin was under any illusions of it being anything but a very hard task, tonight may have changed them.

| New players please! on 22:47 - Aug 17 with 1071 views | AndyCole | . Same old story isn't it. We were one game and a proper CAM / CF away from Prem league riches last term playing pragmatic, winning football, making the very best of our available talent. Clever, intelligent management. Martin needs to sort himself out. This is poor, in so many ways. . | |

I saw absolutely no vestiges of Cooper's legacy tonight apart from a blunt attack. This was completely different, and actually a lot worse. At least Cooper got the defensive aspect right.

. Surprised that Martin is persisting with him (or maybe I shoudn't be surprised given Martin's bumbling selection, subbing and tactical performance so far). Cabango is not what we need if Martin persists with playing it back, forth and sideways across our defensive third. Was all at (deep)sea defending too. Cabango is our weakest link in this system. Unbelievable Martin didn't hook him along with our other weakest of links Dhanda. Given a masterclass by Wilmot. .

There isn't anyone else fit at the moment. We'll see how long he survives in a starting position once Martin has Naughton, Bennett and Latibeaudiere available for the back line. He didn't sound too confident of the former pair being ready for Friday in his post-match press conference.
| New players please! on 23:32 - Aug 17 with 971 views | Badlands | The back was leaderless tonight as Cabango was on his own out on the touchline … Manning was atrocious (should have been taken off with Bidwell or Latty dropping back), Cooper wasn't at the races possibly because of Manning and Latty seemed to be playing as a winger who wasn’t expected to help midfield or defence. Martin is having to experiment and, as much as I like Fulton as a presence in midfield he is not ready fitness wise or technically. Hopefully Routs will be back soon to add some creativity. | |

That wasn’t the reason that was given at the time, he asked for a “number 9” not just “someone who can score goals”. People were saying “he’s been given Whittaker who is a 700k player”. Well Martin has been given a £1m striker. Ayew is not a number 9, never has been and never will be, regardless of scoring ability, many of which come from the penalty spot. If you disagreed with Cooper regarding our number 9 need last season, then I don’t think anyone has a leg to stand on to be claiming to be needing one now, especially since we have signed Piroe. In reality though, Cooper was spot on then and he would still be spot on now. Remember what he got in return? A sub keeper, a sub right back and two off season American loans. No wonder he was fuming.

| New players please! on 06:42 - Aug 18 with 816 views | builthjack | It will take 2 to 3 transfer windows to clear the dead wood - we have a pile of that - and bring in players who can play the Martin system. The guy has been here a fortnight. Our owners, and Winter, messed about for 2 months trying to get money for Cooper. 2 months wasted which has now ruined this season. Scott needs to prove that the players he brings in are the right ones. Most are not. Martin has to bring his choice of players in. Only then will it work. It's going to be a patient game folks. | |

''It will take 2 to 3 transfer windows to clear the dead wood - we have a pile of that - and bring in players who can play the Martin system.'' ''Only then will it work''. Two points I absolutely agree on. ....But if its clear we don't have the squad to play this system yet and it is not going to work until we do, wouldn't it make sense to not throw the baby out with the bath water and implement it slowly and be more pragmatic until that time? Otherwise in 2 or 3 transfer windows we may well be a League 1 club. It's entirely possible. [Post edited 18 Aug 2021 6:52]

I agree. Its going to be a long haul, and avoiding relegation is key.

Pinning our hopes on a 36 year old Wayne Routledge? Crazy position to be in but says a lot about this squad
| New players please! on 08:36 - Aug 18 with 716 views | magicdaps10 | The players we have can play the system but the issue is they need to get 2 years of playing a system out of their system. It can be done but won't just happen magically after a few weeks. | |
