This could go either way, in fact it could actually assist Boris.
The police won’t release the detail of their investigation and I suspect we’ll only have a press release at the conclusion. The only way we’ll get the detail is if it end up in Court. It may be the case people will have committed offences, but they’re at a threshold below what would be necessary for Court proceedings. Unless Johnson is a defendant, I suspect he’ll use the police investigation to try and clear himself and undermine the Grey report. If he is charged, he’ll be finished.
The Grey report is a completely different animal to the police report, the former will report findings, the police investigation will be concerned with establishing the facts and subject to an evidential test where the burden of proof is beyond reasonable doubt. | | | |

It's a farce, the bottom line is those in Downing Street were having a few drinks during the lockdown rather than setting an example. As few £60 fines is the likely punishment.
