| Smoking 10:04 - Jan 8 with 2175 views | Gwyn737 | I missed this but read today that New Zealand are raising the legal age for buying tobacco year on year until it’s totally phased out. Would that work over here? | | | | |
| Smoking on 10:07 - Jan 8 with 1325 views | onehunglow | I hear it about a month ago. Anything that helps is welcome, surely . Tobacco lobby is still powerful though | |

| Smoking on 10:11 - Jan 8 with 1313 views | Dr_Winston | No. It won't work here. It won't work there either. It'll just result in a black market, the same way as any other attempt at prohibition does. | |
| Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back. |

| Smoking on 10:12 - Jan 8 with 1310 views | STID2017 | I would love to see smoking, whether tobacco or vaping, totally banned worldwide. A senseless act of damaging one's own body to what end ? To a lesser extent energy drink too. An unnecessary evil | |

Good to disagree . It will there and might here.you do not know. Smoking is now perceived as an anti social matter that has and does kill millions and we ve not had the balls to stop it because if the taxes it brings in . Nothing wrong with prohibition of something that clearly takes lives . Don’t see why young children should be subjected to parents who smoke because they see it as a pleasure or personal freedom .

I would rather see it forced underground than readily available as it is now.

I’d agree with you on the banning of most things (including drugs which I think should be legalised) but like OHL, I think the cultural tide may have changed on cigarettes. A slow phasing out as opposed to a total ban may be successful 🤷🻠I don’t think it would work in the US which has far more libertarian types. We tend to be far more compliant as a nation.

That’s what NZ have done, it’s now illegal for anyone born after a certain date to buy cigarettes. Seems a good thing to me. It’s becoming more and more socially unacceptable

People being sent outside to puff away in the piddling rain is a sign of how it is generally detested. One of the few improved social aspects we have seen. Like drink, if you want it,then pay and pay a lot fit it. Drink is insanely cheap and Conservatives seem worse than Labour in not having the guts to fight our drink culture . Pubs closing ? Good . Shut them as many were simply hangouts for deadbeats ,druggies and thieves .

Sadly it seems common amongst the youth ( I.e anyone younger than me) to be smoking again. Vapes have sadly helped it to be somehow fashionable. I would welcome at least something like New Zealand are doing. How much would it save our beleaguered NHS ? I guarantee they don't see a penny of the tobacco taxes

Will it be challenged though? It seems a bit discriminatory that some adults can do things whilst other adults can’t based entirely on their age.

I’m in my 40s, damage done for my generation but I think the new generation around 18, it’s certainly no where near as common as it was. Being banned from pubs and restaurants had a huge effect.
| Smoking on 11:05 - Jan 8 with 1252 views | CountyJim | I hate smoking with a passion but thinking logically can the government afford to ban smoking how much do they make out of smoking and it will drive it to illegal sale's | | | |
| Smoking on 11:10 - Jan 8 with 1252 views | JACKMANANDBOY | Not a fan of smoking, 70,000 premature deaths a year and 700,000 hospital admissions. However, it looks like Governments and the elite are deciding if you can smoke, how you heat your home, what car you drive, reclaiming bigger percentages of your assets when you are sick and when you die. Sounds like socialism by stealth, just got to wait for the money to run out....... | |

New Zealand seem to have a tighter grip on their borders than we do. Cocaine and heroin is illegal but we still seem to have hundreds of tonnes of the stuff sailing in unchecked from the americas and Asia to places like Liverpool and Glasgow. If we banned tobacco here it would still come in by the shipload.

If the police catch you using drugs they can and do arrest you. So if on a lovely summer's day, you will not ( I hope ) find someone snorting cocaine off a bench or table in front of kids. Where as very often people go past me ( and obviously others including kids) blowing out the crap they have just inhaled into their lungs from cigarettes, tobacco or vapes

Alcohol be next, I don't smoke never have, but our social liberties are slowly being eroded away, we're watched everywhere we go, we are mostly likely tracked through mobile phones and we just accept these things, constantly controlled in some way or other. That's probably a bit over dramatic, but I'm sure most will know what I mean.

| Smoking on 14:41 - Jan 8 with 1142 views | onehunglow | Personal freedom to smoke . fine .Want to kill yourself fine too but don’t waste my and others money in hospital which can be utilised by people who try to look after their health . Kids have a freedom to be brought up in a fag free environment State control ! Rather ironic that considering the majority on here are socialists. | |

Ironic doesn't come into it, which ever way you look we are controlled and this government has taking it further with this new law with regards to striking, all be it for essential staff, who probably wouldn't strike if it endangered life, they've got to much pride and care for that.

What has politics to do with this apart from fact Labour and Tories favour profit over public health
