Bulldog was great - proper kickings given and taken in good nature.
Keepy up's with a difference -- C**T. You had four lives and were awarded a letter for each time you let the ball bounce. First one in the circle to get right the way from C to T got bundled with everyone else shouting "You C...!"
Slaps and wraps -- with our without playing cards
Polo tunnel of death - whoever kicked the polo and it broke got it in the tunnel
More sedate childhood games were available like...

Was thinking about this one recently. Anyone ever play 'Sticks'?
You had two sticks about 8 inches long with a 'y' on top of each which held another stick, laid on top of them horizontally. Then, like cricket, there were two teams who bowled at the sticks, bouncing the ball up to knock the top stick. After that, I can't remember what happened, except that the other team tried to catch the ball and everyone ran around like complete lunatics. |  |

At Acton High School we used to play Patball which I am sure is called various other things over the years and different schools.
Essentially it is similar to squash but with a tennis ball and you use your hands to slap the ball against a (mostly) blank brick wall.
The ball had to bounce before it hit the wall after you hit it and it was allowed to bounce only once after it had come back off the wall before the next player hits it. First to 10 points or whatever score you wanted to set...
There were a number of interesting and suspect rules that resulted in the replay of a point...
Obs - Player or spectator obstructs you getting to the ball to hit it, either intentionally or not.
Funny Bounce - The ball hit an object on the floor unexpectedly such as a school bag, coke can, big pebble etc.
Mids - The ball hit the area between the ground and the wall so it wasn't possible to tell if it was a legal shot or not.
Tiny ball - Where the shots between players got progressively and ridiculously smaller and you couldn't determine where the bounces were any more!
Or we just used to play football with a tennis ball as footballs had been banned at some point as they caused too many 'injuries'... Improved my dribbling skills though I reckon. |  | | |

In our 1970’s comprehensive we had murder ball, played in the tennis courts a football would be kicked about, if it hit you above the knee and below your neck you got a right kick in, if you tried to run the beatings were doubled, although it’s sounds dodgy it was quite a good laugh.
The best technique if hit was to curl up into a ball next to the fence, could only be got from one side and you could protect your head and nuts! |  |

Bulldog - ‘kin ‘ave it!
For the life of me, I can’t recall the name of a game a game we played, which was similar to had, but used a tennis ball. Everyone in a circle, battering the ball between us and whoever’s legs the ball went through, they were ‘it’. Then they would try to hit other players in the leg with the ball. Once you’d been hit with the ball, you then became ’it’. A variation on the game was players hit would join with other players so as to form a team. Last person hit, wins.

We had a horrible playground 'punishment' whereby a lad was forced to wrap his legs around a shelter pole then sit on his legs. He couldn't get up without grabbing the pole and pulling himself up. Everyone would then gob on the pole and laugh their heads off.

"join on the Army, no girls allowed" was another that wouldnt meet health and safety or inclusivity thresholds nowadays, if you ended up at the end of the line the best you could really hope for was a grazed knee

I worked in a Summer camp in Maine years ago. Before the kids arrived the camp director was giving the staff a rundown on what to expect, what was acceptable etc. I quote: “and I have to say this every year to the Brits. It is NOT acceptable to try and teach our children British Bulldog”.

World Cup?
Any number of players but usually no more than 4, you had one kick to hit the ball between 2 points on a wall or garage door.
If you missed (I think!) you got a W, once you got to World Cup you were out!
Its possible that if you 'scored' you got a letter and first one to to World Cup won.

I used to love headers & volleys. It’s been a while. Wasn’t it a game for when there weren’t quite enough to make two teams but you had a goal? Or something that resembled a goal even if was just painted on the wall. I think a cross-bar was necessary. I recall an intricate scoring system, points for hitting the post and crossbar perhaps. Was it the goalie (and maybe one defender) against at least 2 attackers with one of the attackers flinging the crosses over? It was a great way to hone your crossing and volleying skills. Bosh! Have that! Top corner!
Moving from the playground to the street there was a game I played a lot in Ireland in the holidays. Cat. All you needed was a hurling stick and two halves of a house-brick placed near each other with a small stumpy stick (the cat) sharpened at both ends and placed on top of the bricks. There was a batting (or catting?) team and a fielding team. With the hurling stick you had to flick the cat as far away from the bricks as possible without the fielding team catching it. Then you’d be given a number in which you had to jump (or stride) from the cat back to the bricks and if you managed it that was your score. The young un’s would play it all day then the teenager’s would join in and then occasionally the adults would join in - usually on their way back from the pub. I remember seemingly whole streets playing it, one side of the street versus the other, long into the twilight of a summer night.
No actual cats were harmed in the playing of this game. Well not usually anyway. [Post edited 4 Jul 2022 17:07]

We used to call it "Knock a Dolly" Often played down Oldfield Lane South and around Ravenor park. We used to do Carol singing from around the Bridge Hotel up towards Ruislip road until we had enough for a Wimpy and then "Knock a Dolly" on the way home. why it was called that is a mystery aa it was invariably a angry man who used to chase us back down towards the Western Avenue | | | |
