Contract for Martin. 09:41 - Apr 23 with 18605 viewsPaddyhoops

Think he’s done really well for us since coming in .
He’s not particularly mobile but he’s a canny operator and he’s chipped in with with a few goals since he’s come here.
He’s attitude is first class . Worth an another season … possibly.

In his short time at the club, he has been of greater value to the club than the Charlie Austin from last season, who is a year younger than Martin.

He's only one league goal behind Austin in far fewer games, has the right attitude, leadership qualities and has proved that he can still contribute at this level. Unlike Charlie, who I recall disrespectfully questioned the signing of Martin when it happened in February on a social media account.

Not sure that I'd sign him up for another season, but I am very grateful for his contributions, on and off the pitch, in a very short period of time.

Austin was told by the club he was too old and asked if he was retiring so can see why he'd find it funny that a few months later we were signing an older player as we had no one else

Martin has come in and done well, the goals against West Brom and Burnley are of course huge but performance wise he's been pretty ropey in most games. I think we're a bit rose tinted about Martin at the moment. Austin didn't have a good season last year but his performances were not hugely different to what Martin has produced imo. We were right to let Charlie go and we should be doing the same with Martin

Kolli has been training with the first team for some months now though I see he played for the U18s on Saturday and scored. He's only 18 and I think he'll need more development and a loan or two out before we know if he can play for the first team.

I'd like to see us go mad and try some of these kids out in our own first team rather than let someone else develop them.

Guys, come on.

and his goals ?????

Wouldn't have come from Armstrong that's for sure.

I actually wouldn't re sign him, but no way has he been a bad signing.

I don't think anyone's saying he was a bad signing, we signed him to do a job and he's done that. Next season he'll be older so slower, less mobile possible that injuries will catch up with him, that's not what we need. We have given him an opportunity to show he can still do it and I'm sure he'll get a contract somewhere off the back of that.

The only way we should even think about it is if he's so cheap he's basically on the fee of a reserve and Gaz wants to keep him but it's not ideal.

No contract for Martin. He has helped us out in unique circumstances in these last few weeks. But his legs are gone. We need pace, pace and pace upfront. Look what Armstrong did the other day. This squad needs a massive revamp. We get it wrong this summer and we will be relegated to League 1 in 12 months time.

He’s done more than what was expected of him and it should be left there at the end of the season. He will get another shot in L1 or L2.
Surely, we need to be looking at Luton, Coventry and Sunderland and try to emulate what they have done with relatively young and inexperienced squads. Whilst I hate Luton they are a fantastic watch.
If we just press the re-set button at the end of the season (providing we stay up) we will go down -mend of. Everything needs a radical re-think and at least we can say we tried.

Precisely. Fair play to him for his attitude and *that* goal but if we can't do better than him next season, we may as well give up.

Really don't agree with you there, dave - Martin has been head and shoulders above what Austin gave us last year.

Despite everyone saying how big his arse is, he's been far more mobile than Saint Charlie was and would be this season.

But 36 is getting on a bit, isn't it?

Can we go out yet?

Come on mate. He can't move about. He's done his job. If you give him another year you are mental. Mental. And we'll go down.

We all know forwards are the hardest players to sign, especially at a price we can afford and who will score goals.
We cannot afford to go into next season with a similar situation to the beginning of this one when we had just Dykes and Bonne with the untried Armstrong. IF the contract is cheap enough I’d give Martin another year based on his contribution since he’s joined.

The guy was basically retired in January.

If we'd lost 5-0 at Burnley on Saturday, as we all expected, and as could easily have happened on the balance of play, would this thread exist?

I don't remember a Manager of QPR who didn't want a wise old Pro in his Squad to provide on field experience and know how to younger and less experienced players and Gareth obviously does too. I agree it helps. Whether Martin is one or not for next season no doubt we'll look at when we know what League we are in and evaluate the squad/see which players we can bring in etc etc. But no way is that evaluation "mental". He looks a better candidate to me to fill that role fitness wise and in his on-field communication than either Stefan or Albert even though retiring those two will cost due their ongoing contracts.

On the face of it he is not someone who we should be extending his contract......

However, it really does depend on many things, wages, his work behind the scenes(he has not been made captain for nothing), what other forward(s) can we sign, etc, etc....he also brings other things on the field of play which we do not have in the side.

Posters should not forget his goalscoring ratio is far better than our other forwards.

No. No pace and haven’t been particularly impressed with his all round contribution. Bristol City fans were stunned we had signed him those I know expected him to be league 1/2 or retire as he’s really struggled there. Time to save the salary we would have paid Martin for a gamble on a lower league player.

Opinions - ALL fine BUT we WOULD be down without his goals.

We have no idea if playing Martin has saved us, had we made a different singing or played without Martin we may have got more points, who can possible tell?

No way should we be entertaining the idea of resigning Martin. As it stands we will still have Uncle and SJ on the book’s next season that’s two too many “older pros” to add to that list would be mental

But not to.my patience.
Possibly the most immobile footballer I ever watched. And that includes Akinfenwa and Mark Hateley.

Don’t need to be mobile to score the goals similar to the one at Burnley. His positional awareness is far superior to that of Dykes and he will score goals for that reason alone.

After what we have been through with strikers this season, we need to have at least three fit and available at all times. As third choice and on low wages, if affordable, another 1 year contract from me. With a large revamp of the squad required this summer however, the funds are likely needed elsewhere.

His efforts will not be forgotten, pivotal to saving our bacon…..hopefully.

44 games played so far and we've scored 43 goals, only Wigan Huddersfield and Cardiff have scored fewer goals.

Hallelujah, how come most teams can have 18 and 19 year olds playing regularly yet we're not allowed till there mid 20's.

His four goals have contributed towards gaining three extra points (1 vs West Brom and 2 vs Burnley) so we would be on 44 points still one point above the fakes and still in our own hands.

He's obviously scored a couple of every important goals, and he speaks well off the pitch, but let's be serious here. He's done. Signing him was an act of utter desperation. To offer him a new contract would be an insane repetition of past mistakes.

For one, it looks like we're going to play a style of football that requires effort and workmate - well he can barely move. Second, we have to stop giving out contracts based on short term dopamine hits. Third every man and his dog knows we have to cut a huge amount of expenditure next season, every single penny is going to have to be accounted for.

Re-signing Chris Martin makes no sense on any level whatsoever. I can't believe anyone would even consider it.

I honestly didn’t think this thread had any legs at all and to be truthful I was playing devils advocate with the original post .
It’s quiet obvious from the reply’s That there’s no appetite to give him a contract which is fair enough.
Would I have posted the thread after a five nil defeat? Definitely not but for what it’s worth he seems like a decent pro and unlike the others in our ranks he actually gives the impression he gives a shit. Is it worth a new contract? No.Time for the youngsters to shine .
I’m sure by the law of averages, Armstrong will get off the mark soon .
He frightens the bejaysus out of some defenders and if he gets he’s finishing right he’ll do the business.

Things QPR fans are weirdly into, that no other club is that fussed about

- Giving ex players with no coaching experience very specific coaching roles because they were good at passing or something
- Signing older players to do a job, then giving them a contract far beyond that job
- Pay as you play contracts
