What's the best piece of advice someone has ever given you?

I was in Morrisons some years ago and a Scotsman lurched up and intoned.
"Keep it in yer troosers."

You know what,I haven't looked back since.

One Sunday morning about 65 Years ago when I was about 7 Years old, I walked into our tiny kitchen just as my old Dad was polishing his shoes, the silly sod looked up at me and said "before you go out on a Sunday allway's make sure you polish your shoes and brylcreem your hair"
That's all he said.

The man with the full cup walks slowly.

I rushed this earlier. It's a hard one to explain. An elderly friend gave me this nugget years ago as I was, and still am inside, extremely impetuous. Dangerously so. The phrase taught me not to rush into decisions. Your cup is full. Keep it that way.

It really helped me avoid arguments, fights and stupid decisions.
Most of them, anyway!

"If this job was easy then someone with less talent than you would be doing it". This was a quote from a desk top calendar I had years ago. I tore out the quote and pinned it on my desk.
I might still have it in a box of old stuff somewhere. Always kept me sane when things went tits up.

I'm always dispassionate about big broad wooly worldly advice like 'aim for the stars if you miss you'll hit the moon' or 'never give up chasing your dreams' and other aspirational stuff as it's not grounded in an y sort of reality, not measurable, and if you're struggling for motivation or inspiration or needing a boost it offers almost no real salve.

I prefer my advice to be simple, practical and immediately implementable.
