| England Thread 🏴 on 22:16 - Jun 11 by joe90 | Ah, my comment was poorly written. What I was trying to say was that before Southgate England had been a bit sh*te. Great players, toxic media, high expectations, fractured team..etc. Then Southgate came along and got a good feeling back around England IMO. As you say, he got us to 2 out 3 of the last major tournament finals. I think that’s a tough act for Tuchel to follow. |
Totally agree. If Tuchel doesn't isn't successful I won't hold it against him though. There are some stats elsewhere on this forum that said all the big teams only really have 8-12% of winning it. That's the mathematical nature of tournament football. Opened my eyes a bit. So many obstacles that have no bearing on the overall quality or form of a team. [Post edited 11 Jun 22:33]

| England Thread 🏴 on 22:28 - Jun 11 by Hunterhoop | Dave, it’s for the US TV networks. In the US they went straight to adverts as soon as the water breaks happen. US networks almost never go 45mins without adverts across any channel or sport. Infantino has sold the game’s soul. It actually will change the game. Where the temps aren’t ridiculous it will enable teams to press for longer, and it may cause a delay in subs. It probably benefits the smaller sides as the manager gets two more chances to get messages to the side and change things. Don’t like them. And think the clock should stop, not have the 3 mins bolted on as injury time. |
I'm sure that had an influence on things but I think they will be needed and are not unusual to have water breaks when you have games in the summer. The games soul was sold years ago when they gave the World Cup to Qatar and Russia

It is but I like what I've seen from Tuchel so far. He's very good with the media (expertly swatted away a somewhat pathetic attempt to draw him into politics in a recent presser), the players seem to like him and he's actually picked people on form and their place in the team. A far cry from trying to play Lampard and Gerrard together etc. Time as always will tell.
| England Thread 🏴 on 09:50 - Jun 12 with 3100 views | TheChef | I'm not expecting much - we don't tend to do well in the Americas what with the heat and humidity, reaching the round of 16 or quarter finals I can live with. And no thanks to FIFA, having the extra knockout round makes it more tricky. I thought Simon Kuper put it well in his recent World Cup book: "These exercises confirmed an obvious truth that I took years to learn: so many chance elements affect the result of a single football match that it’s pointless even trying to forecast a World Cup. The winner of the tournament plays just seven games, most of which will be decided by a single goal or on penalties. In such a short random walk, almost any plausible team can get lucky. Only once you accept that the World Cup is held together by flukes (a bit like life itself) does the whole thing start to make sense." But anyway, I'm predicting a Latin American or South European team to win it. | |

I've watched loads of prediction videos and they all have it between the same 6 teams. France, Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Argentina and England History tells you the last 4 will have one random team you don't expect. Been Morocco, Croatia even Turkey over the years, will be another unexpected one this time

I know this is obvious but at least 2 of that ‘big 6’ won’t make the semifinals.

Yeah, it's a massive task and there are so many variables out of his control. I just want to enjoy the tournament and if England have a good run then that's a bonus. [Post edited 12 Jun 13:24]

of course but they seem to always have 4 of those 6 in the semi final which feels unlikely to me, certainly the best 6 teams on paper but a couple of them will go out early. I quite fancy Japan or Norway to go deep in this one [Post edited 12 Jun 14:47]

Well yes, most likely it will be one of those six teams (OK maybe not England). And yes also, there tends to be one breakout team in the tournament that no one expects. In the end you need to be good, but most importantly you need to be lucky.

Says we have a team of athletes with only 3 in the squad under 6ft I’m not sure that’s the sort of athlete needed. Pace, mobility and endurance is what the squad needs/needed. I’m convinced the German thinks he can Arsenal his way through using set pieces as the main source of attacking threat. Maybe he’s right. To be fair Southgate did come up with some good set piece routines that helped us progress deep into tournaments. I just think you need to have that little bit of panache at this level to be a threat so hopefully Bellingham and Eze can have good tournaments. Cmon England!

| England Thread 🏴 on 20:34 - Jun 11 by Hooparoo | Looks like the Yanks finally got what they wanted. Quarters not halves so they can flog stuff during the “hydration break”. What a joke 😬 |
That's what they wanted in 1994 and as you say, have got it now. The hydration breaks are actually TV advertising breaks, as the players drink their water and are ready to resume playing within 30 - 45 seconds. After that they just stand around getting instructions or waiting to get back in play. FIFA and the USA have spoiled this World Cup with the breaks, ticket prices, entry to the country denied for many and ticket allocations. Having said that, it is the World Cup and most of us are addicted to watching it as we did in 2018 and 2022. [Post edited 17 Jun 16:07]

The neat and pretty teams seem to run out of juice in the last 30 minutes, combination of heat and physical exertion coping with the bigger players. No idea who’s who in our squad these days but reckon we’ll need monsters at the back and midfield if we’re to make a go of it.
