Sam Field 08:22 - Nov 27 with 5141 viewsstumbleandfall

Last 4 starts have seen 4 clean sheets. I’m starting to think he could be a long term option at LB.

That’s some record.

Plays it old school at LB. Full back wannabe wingers away from home have a lot to answer for rather than a cause for celebration.

If you want to run about, be a forward.

He does fine there, as does Morgan on the odd occasions, he has played right back, but RND is better at left back than Sam, being a specialist.

However, its great some players that are on the fringes currently, are flexible enough to switch roles.

All good news for the overall squad, no doubt.

Poll: QPR - Prediction for finishing position 2025/2026 Season

I've not been impressed to be honest.

Impressed with his approach, his willingness to muck in and help the team - which is typical Field, top pro etc. - but if he was a new signing, bought to play left back, based on what I've seen of him there, I wouldn't be singing his praises too much. But I don't hold anything against him as he's playing out of position, and tbh has deserved more opportunities to play in his natural position and show what he can do than he's been given so far this season.

Does what he does very well. Good pro.

Sam always gives everything and looks very comfortable at left back. He's no slouch either and has fair pace on him, plus he's 6 foot 2 which always helps across the back line.

Never knowingly right.
Poll: How long before new signings become quivering wrecks of the players they were?

Sam Field on 12:14 - Nov 27 with 2666 viewsLblock

Nobody has mentioned a header Sam put in stopping an almost certain goal.

It was an immense piece of defending and brave an all as he could see the upright looming and Nardi doing his best Tic-Tac-Toe bookie signals as he flew through the air plus the Rovers forward was bearing down on him.
Danger cleared and Field did it brilliantly.

I do think he's probably the best defensive minded midfielder we have in the squad.

Noted it many times - he'd be a starter for me every week.

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

Can't knock the bloke for giving everything, but I think it says a lot about the club that he is being asked to play there in the first place.

Yeah terrible. 4 appearances at LB, 4 cleans sheets. Bloody club!

I would be starting him instead of Varane more often but he’s done a very decent job in what would be his third best position at left back (he’s a decent centre back as well).
Negative comments about him on last night’s match thread are off the mark IMO: he’s been part of a defence that has kept four clean sheets and whilst he’s not as attacking as RND he still put in that great cross for Smyth’s volley.
He’s an important and versatile member of the squad.

That is a good record to have. Maybe he will keep his place for the Norwich game,

I think he has played well as a left back as the stats above show .

I think Wilkins was probably talking about how thin the cover is at Left Back this season.
We've got a loan player RND and Esquerdinho. Is Larkeche still at the club?

Going into a season with a loan player and a DS player stepping up is optimistic at best.

For me the fullbacks have been weak since Warburton times.

Larkeche was going to be first choice this seasn I think, but got a season ending injury at the start of the season.

The fact we've got a versatile player to cover/play LB alogside RND is a good thing imo. Just because Field isn't pigeon holed as an orthodox LB is irrelavent. He's clearly capable of playing that position. So I don't see the problem personally.

If Wilkins is being honest, it's just a personal thing that's he's got with FIeld, as well as Smyth and Dunne.

I like Field, I always like a player that can do multiple jobs.
Its just so QPR at the moment that we do a contract extension for a player and then apparently tell them they are surplus to requirements!?

I get that Cook was an extension by the player, and I almost understand the weird statement from the club distancing themselves in case Cook only played a few games, but Field has been a really solid player for a few seasons now, not sure why they would want to do him like that?

Sorry, but Sammy is a pretty ropy leftback. He failed to execute at least three simple passes last night that put us under pressure. He gave the ball away cheaply that then led to the Hamer injury.
He provided barely any forward impetus which meant Chair was largely unsupported and got continually kettled towards the Rovers tight congested backline.
He is an emergency stop-gap option at best.
Beyond that I feel he's been strangely off-the-pace for about a year. Cannot question his commitment and he will get tackles in and his height is useful when defending set pieces. But ultimately we need RND back cos he's far more secure, accomplished and progressive.

Field was involved in the goal, he picked up a loose ball, played in to Chair and then continued his run forward. Also, Field's cross led to Smyth's volley chance that hit the keeper.

So he’s not as good as a specialised left back in his third best position?
We’ve got a decent squad with options in most positions with a head coach who is not afraid to rotate and Field has done well all the times he has played instead of RND.
You watched his performance in last night’s win and clean sheet and could only pick out negatives 🙄

hes not cool, enough for the youth hasnt been for ages , same for smythn who used to get dogs abuse regardless of how he had played in the game

field had a decent second half last night bal for chair for the goal and pass to smyth for the volley , from left back compared to the zero attacking contributions of madson and varanne in midfield , madson did try one clipped bal down the channel for burrell in the second half which the defender easily got a header to.

id love to see the sats for the amount of time the keeper rec the ball from varanne per game .

That's exactly what I was saying.

I'll criticise Field as a CM as he can't pass, but as a LB, no one should knock him. He is doing his best in difficult circumstances due to the shortcomings above him regarding recruitment.

Agree about the FBs being weak, but Dunne being moved inside has helped balance the team now.

Never understood why it has to be slag off Field or slag off Varane. I like both of them and happy both are in the squad. They both seem like good lads and put shift in for the side. And they are both good championship footballers. And yes of course they could improve certain areas….mainly going forward and their passing. But that isn’t their primary role in the squad / side.

Also made a brilliant goal saving header towards the end of the game where he nearly got injured in the process.

I think he's almost universally respected as a top pro and an all round good bloke. Doesn't make it wrong to point out that RND is a more natural full back and offers more going forward or that Sam's distribution can be a bit dodgy.
It would be interesting to see how he got on if given 5 games alongside Madsen. There's not much if anything that Varane does that field can't do. They're pretty similar. I guess they see more potential resale value in Varane.
