"Joyride" is also excellent. Set in Ireland, it sees a quirk of fate throw a teenager from a troubled family together with a woman - played by Olivia Colman - who has just given birth to an unwanted child. Poignant yet full of humour. |  |

Watched Deliver Me From Nowhere last night. As a massive Bosshead, I was nervous cos everyone told me it was dreadful, so I had a weird framing effect where it wasn't as bad as I'd been told so I thought it was ok.
It absolutely reeked of studio interference though; there is a thoughtful meditative film in there. Wish A24 had won the bidding war instead of Fox.
Its central struggle is that it doesn't know what it wants to be about. Is it about Bruce and his dad? Doesn't even tell us that the cause of his dad's issues was undiagnosed schizophrenia. Is it about making an album? Well, that's not that interesting and there's no arc cos Bruce just wants one thing and won't compromise. Is it about choosing an artistically valid path or the more poppy successful one? No cos he released both albums and they were both really successful. Is it about getting help with depression? No, cos it just kinda tacks that onto the end.

Agree about Sinners, I didn't love it but admired how well made it is, some beautiful shots, and the use of music is excellent.
Edit: I need to watch this film again because so many people who's opinions I respect really rated it, and on the face of it it's a film that couldn't be any more my jam [Post edited 26 Jan 9:20]

Korean film based on the French version called the Axe, that nobody saw or took notice of. It's a great black comedy in the same vein as Parasite to a degree, excellent characterisation and strong central performances. Highly recommend!

Started watching Marty Supreme the other night. Really enjoyed it, but we ended up calling it a night because it's pretty long and we're pretty old and sleepy.
Weirdly, even though I really enjoyed the hour and half I watched, i'm not in a great rush to watch the rest. I enjoyed the vibe, the score and general sound scaping is superb - I'm really into that sort of thing, and it sounded amazing over 5.1 surround sound. I thought Chalamet was really good, clearly having a whale of a time. But the narrative had kind of lost its momentum by the time we ducked out - perhaps it picks up again in the second half. | | | |

Also watched Black Cab recently. Went in not expecting too much from it - and that's what i got.

This isn't good. But it's only 80 minutes long, and has a reasonably enjoyable first half hour.
Nick Frost is doing Nick Frost things, and is entertainingly hammy. The other two main characters are annoying and the acting is bad, especially the boy friend. He's really bad.

Not got to many film this year yet - loads going on.
I rewatched Kinives Out the other day because ATRM had done it and it's still brilliant.
I went to see the Bride! I really did wonder wtf I was watching and ended up going back and watching it again a couple of days later. It's a real Frankenstein of a film with Maggie Gyllenhall chucking everything at the screen - Bonny and Clyde, 20s musical, film noir to name 3. It's bananas but on second viewing realised it was entertaining, if only for Jesse Buckley who is awesome.
I also saw Dolly the other day - pretty formulaic 80's style gore and grindcore. Not worth your attention. |  |

As previously mentioned...I Swear, One Battle After Another, Hamnet, Sinners all very strong.
I'm also a sucker for old black & white films and watched Fail Safe, a Cold War thriller made in 1964 which I'd never seen before and was excellent (Larry Hagman, Walter Mitthaus, Henry Fonda). I'm not usually a fan of remaking films in the modern era, but think this could be a contender given the right treatment |  | | |

How to Make a Killing - entertaining A24 black comedy but Kind Hearts and Coronets did it better.

The first half of Sirat is one of the most astonishing things I've ever seen.
Then something horrible happens, and it gets very cruel, and the characterisation is too thin to pull it off imo. Meanders out and I was waiting for it to end. Odd experience | | | |

Mr Nobody Against Putin is the Oscar-winning documentary on iPlayer, very dark story about how the war in Ukraine reached into a school in a dreary Russian town. Well worth catching.
Straight afterwards, iPlayer served us up Sanatorium,another documentary about a Soviet-era health spa clinging on to life on the Black Sea coast. While it switches from bizarre, surreal comedy to pessimism, the strange collection of characters share a lovely innocence with the Russian schoolkids over the border, though you feel might it not serve them well. |  | | |

Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die - very entertaining, quite original, ending was a bit too messy. 4.5/5
War Machine - basically Predator meets Terminator but in a Southern Comfort sort of way. Not as good as any of those films but better than anything Pred/Term has done in 20 years. 4/5 (might be a bit generous there).
Whistle - I love horror films where the deadly evil in it follows some sort of rule (think: It Follows or Final Destination). Fairly spectacular kills. Good premise. 4/5
We Bury The Dead - Daisy Ridley is so shit in this. But it's, at least, a fairly original take on zombie movies. 2.5/5 | |
